Default Painting my rims

I have an 06 TR and would love to paint the rims a semi-gloss black. I have done several searches and got a lot of great information and instruction, but what i want to know is how much time will I have to spend on touch-ups in the future? Will it faod or come off with rim cleaner or just soap and water? Would powdercoating be more cost effective?

Any and all information will be much appreciated.

Wait, you want to paint the rims or wheels?

Are they the stock wheels/rims?

I want to paint the "Wheels". They are the stock 06 17" . I personally like the style, just not the color... so i was thinking a semigloss engine black by duplicolor

Maybe if they arent done right, but some people like me have upwards of 20k invested in they're subie and like the style of the bbs just not the color, so why not paint them.. I painted mine satin black with a red lip and it looks stunning. But if you still feel that way I guess maybe blowing by at 160 will take your attention off of my painted wheels

Hell Yeah!! Thank you for backing me up. I know it is my car and could care less about what some of the other comments here... I just wanted to know if painting them was a hassel and if powdercoat was better

I have 20k invested as well, so I don't know how quickly you will be flying by. And there is a small difference between painting OEM BBS wheels (not a fan, but it's not as cheap looking as WRX wheels) and OEM WRX wheels.

That's my opinion at least, and I know I'm not the only one.

Ive painted lots of wheels, all I ever did if the clear wasnt peeling or whatever, was wash them with dishsoap, scuff with a scotch brite, wash with dishsoap again. Dry with paper towel, and paint with Rustoleum. Even with a brush it works, cuz it's self levelling.

Paint 'em. Just do it right, you should have to do much touch up.

pnutbutta said it best. I've had powdercoated wheels on my Acura before and it chipped like crazy. Ended up getting them redone because it started getting bad. Whoever would powdercoat them for you might do a better job than my guy, but I'd recommend painting them all the way. Mine are now and I've yet to see any chipping or fading etc... I also disagree on painted wheels looking "cheap". I've seen all types of wrx/sti wheels painted and if done right, they dramatically change up the look. It's just a simple diy that looks good when done right.

Probably pretty quickly honestly, but enough with the pissing contest, my point is some people like the style just not the color, so if its done right its not a cheap route just a way to get your car to your liking. I do agree the wrx wheelz are not the best looking wheel and I probably wouldnt paint paint them, but thats a personal op.

I have had my OEM wheels painted now 2 years. I have no fading, or chipping issues and I have had numerous people ask me where I got them. I just tell them that they came on the car but they were silver...I just rattle canned them. You can't tell at all..both the inside and outside are painted so that they look like they came that way. Yeah, I plan on getting some better wheels but I wanted gold and couldn't wait.

this pic was taken the day after they were painted. I know, it is a camera phone pic

and here is a more recent shot...also a camera phone shot

At the minimum, have them sandblasted. Handsanding won't get past all of the original paint..

The key is prep. I would just have them powder coated though, gloss black is one of the cheapest colors you can have done..

Just sand it down with some 200 or more grit then primer it and if u want speed have a friend use a heat gun while u prep other wheel.

Primer 2 coats and paint it a few coats make sure it drys b4 each.
should turn out great and last long enough.

Not expensive at all don't waste money on powder coating it.

by the time it is time to repaint or w/e you have probably got yourself something new =]
