The sixth round of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge will take place in the Vyborg area, which is situated about 130 kilometres northwest of historic Saint Petersburg.

Rally Russia (July 9-11) will not be following the typical IRC format as the programme covers three days and features 15 stages on its schedule.

The 2009 edition of the IRC's Russian chapter begins on the evening of Thursday July 9th with four stages split into two loops. On Friday, the crews will take on another pair of loops, these counting three stages each.

On Saturday July 11th, third and final day of the event, the morning loop contains three stages while the afternoon's repeat passage only counts the first two stages run in the morning.

In all, 670 kilometres are on the menu of this season's Rally Russia, of which 223.45km will be run against the clock.

The Vyborg region is in the GMT + 4 time zone; the schedule indicated below is in local time. Most European countries must retract two hours, UK residents must retract three.

Rally Stuff

On Wednesday evening the official shakedown gave the crews and their teams a first opportunity to experience the fast gravel that the Vyborg-based event is renowned for, with regular front-runners Abarth and Skoda once again showing extremely competitive form in the shakedown.

Skoda's Finnish gravel expert Juha Hanninen topped the times, with his Czech teammate Jan Kopecky just 1.5 seconds behind him and then Abarth's young Finnish charger Anton Alen claimed third position just over a second behind the Skodas.

Fourth fastest overall, within sight of the leading times, was Britain's Guy Wilks in the all-new Proton Satria Neo built by Mellors Elliott Motorsport, which debuted on last month's Belgium Ypres Rally. After going out of its debut event on the opening day, the promising Proton has bounced back with a vengeance, endorsing the team's decision to venture to Russia with the car.

"It was the last minute decision to take part in Rally Russia, and out coming to Ypres was the same story," said team principal Chris Mellors. "Nevertheless we are pleased with the performance of the car today."

Next came Abarth's reigning European champion Giandomenico Basso in the second works Abarth just one tenth of a second faster than local hero, Russia's reigning national rally champion Aleksander Zheludov, privately running a Peugeot 207 S 2000.

"After Belgium we didn't make any improvements on the car," Basso said. "The set-up of the car is quite good, now we have to accumulate all the aspects of success - speed, precision and reliability, but it is not easy to guess what the results will be before the start of what is a challenging rally"

Five-time former Russian rally champion Andrey Zhigunov was delighted to end the shakedown as the fastest non-super 2000 runner in his Mitsubishi Evo IX, just 0.3s ahead of IRC regular Franz Wittmann's similar car. The fastest of the 2WD cars was the Honde Civic Type R of Estonian ace Caspar Koiytla, posting a time of 1m20.4s

Shakedown Times

1. Hanninen 1m08.2s
2. Kopecky +1.5
3. Alen +2.7s
4. Wilks +3.7s
5. Basso +4.1s
6. Zheludov +4.1s
7. Zhigunov +4.8s
8. Wittman +5.1s

A good opportunity for Alen, who needs some good results. Unfortunately the Skodas in general and Hanninen in particular will be tough to beat. Seeing Proton continuing is nice, too.

Day 1 (evening)

9 Jul 2009 19:57
After SS1: Hanninen Leads

Juho Hanninen storms away at the front of the field in a dramatic first stage in Russia.

The first stage of this year's Rally Russia got underway in fine style, with the five front-running Super 2000 machines being pressed hard by the local aces.

Skoda's Finnish gravel ace Juho Hanninen has led the way through the opening 15.14km stage of Yashino 1. Hanninen pulled out almost exactly half a second per kilometre over second-placed man Giandomenico Basso's Abarth Grande Punto, with the second Fabia of Jan Kopecky in third 1.2s behind him and Britain's Guy Wilks keeping ahead of Anton Alen's Abarth in fourth place.

"I had a problem when we went through the water on that stage and it came in through the fresh air vent on the roof," Alen said. "It soaked the inside of the windscreen and made things pretty heavy going for a while."

Mitsubishi's Austrian star Franz Wittmann is sixth, ahead of the two top-running Russians: Aleksandr Zheludov and Boris Zimin. "I'm not driving on the limit yet, we're just feeling our way into the event as it will never be won on the first night," said Wittmann. "But that said, I'm delighted to be so high up at this stage."

Leading the 2WD class is the Honda Civic Type R of Estonian driver Caspar Koiytla in ninth place overall. There were incidents for fancied runners, as five-time former Russian rally champion Andrey Zhigunov cut a tyre on his Mitsubishi Evo IX and dropped seven minutes in getting through the stage, while defending national rally champion Aleksander Zheludov is struggling for power in his Peugeot 207 S 2000.

SS2:
With Juha Hanninen showing why the works Skoda Motorsport team has entrusted him as the star gravel driver in its new Fabia S2000 car on this year's Intercontinental Rally Challenge, so his asphalt-specialist team mate Jan Kopecky make short work of passing Giandomenico Basso's Abarth Grande Punto for second place.

Many of the drivers are still to find their feet on the event, however. Hanninen is not happy with the lack of grip he is currently feeling in his Fabia, despite leading, while all the drivers have been surprised by the depth of the watersplashes after heavy rain since the recce.

Throughout the rest of the top order it has been a matter of holding station, with few drivers willing to risk a non-finish so early in the event. Guy Wilks in the all-new Proton Satria Neo holds a strong fourth from Anton Alen in the second Abarth, Franz Wittman still delightedly holds sixth place despite a worrying problem with the rear axle of his Mitsubishi and the struggling Zheludov's Peugeot is seventh despite having dropped a cylinder on the second stage.

Meanwhile Boris Zimin has slipped back to ninth place, promoting the astonishing Kaspar Koitla to eighth in his 2WD Honda Civic.

SS3 YASHINO 2

The second run of the evening through the Yashino stage saw a fine showing from Giandomenico Basso hit trouble as his third-placed Grande Punto picked up a puncture in the third stage, allowing the rampant Skoda Fabias of leader Juha Hanninen and team mate Jan Kopecky to streak still further ahead through the forests around the host city of Vyborg.

"I'm just keeping to the middle of the road and trying to keep out of trouble," said leader Hanninen. "The stages have changed so much with the heavy rainfall today, the watersplashes are now like lakes and people are struggling.

Basso slips to fourth as Guy Wilks now takes over third place in his Proton Satria Neo. Anton Alen remains fifth in the second Abarth, with a resurgent Aleksandr Zheludov picking up the pace after dropping a cylinder earlier on in his Peugeot and recovering to sixth overall. Franz Wittmann is seventh after a scare over how well his Mitsubishi's rear axles were taking the strain, while Boris Zimin has got back past the flying 2WD Honda of Kaspar Koitla.

End of Day 1 - SS4 KUTUZOVO 2

Having led from the start, Hanninen again set the fastest time as the field came through their second run of the evening in the Kutuzovo stage. He stretched his advantage over teammate Jan Kopecky by another two seconds over the 10.35km forest stage, while Guy Wilks held his advantage over Giandomenico Basso's Abarth in a fine showing for the new Proton Satria Neo.

Anton Alen comes to the overnight halt fifth in the second Abarth, with Aleksandr Zheludov now flying in his Peugeot 207 after fixing the ignition coil after the first loop in sixth. Franz Wittmann's Mitsubishi Evo IX holds seventh overnight despite two punctures - one in SS3 and one on the road to SS4, with Boris Zimin eighth and Kaspar Koilta ninth as the leading 2WD car.

The 70.05km total through the four stages this evening have taken a heavier toll on the local men than on the IRC stars, with reigning national champion Zheludov's engine woes paling as five-time former Russian rally champion Andrey Zhigunov is forced out after suspension damage on SS 2 in his Mitsubish

In the flying Finn's wake, Guy Wilks took time out of the second-placed Skoda of Jan Kopecky with a stirring drive to second fastest.

The stage saw all three of yesterday's retirements restart the event under Superally regulations. The Mitsubishi of five-time Russian champion Andrey Zhigunov, last year's 2WD winner Vadim Mikhailov and Vladimir Kabanov, the only Volkswagen competing in this, the sixth round of the 2009 IRC, got back in action. Unfortunately for Mikhailov the joy was short-lived as he went out again on SS6.

Meanwhile there were more dramas for the Peugeot 207 of Aleksandr Zheludov. Once again he has been hit with a misfiring cylinder and also suffered a puncture on the stage, although he still set the seventh fastest time.

Giandomenico Basso's Abarth and the Proton of Guy Wilks were both hobbled by cut tyres on SS7, Topolki 1, as the rain-soaked and rock-strewn surface continues to make its presence felt in the running order.

Their misfortune promotes the young Finn Anton Alen to third place in his Abarth. Wilks and the MEM team behind the stunning new Proton are pressing on, treating the remainder of the event as an extended test of their suspension setups for the brand new car.

Juho Hanninen retained his 100% record of fastest stage times so far this weekend, with team mate Jan Kopecky dropping a further 9 seconds in arrears.

The second loop of Day 2 in Russia got underway with the first run through Druzhnoselie after this morning's cancellation of SS5. Once again Juho Hanninen claimed the fastest time in his works Skoda Fabia S2000, with fellow Finn Anton Alen pressing hard to come second in his Grande Punto.

Jan Kopecky retains second place after setting the third fastest time on the stage, followed by Giandomenico Basso's Abarth and local hero Aleksandr Zheludov in his Peugeot 207.

In the 2WD class flying Estonian Kaspar Koilta was usurped from the top time by Sergey Bakulin, at the wheel of a Lada. Nevertheless the Civic driver still holds eighth overall for Honda in his thrilling battle with the Ralliart Exo IX of Boris Zimin.

While Juho Hanninen continues to set the pace and extend his lead over Skoda team-mate Jan Kopecky at the front of the field, the drama continues for those in the wake of the two Czech cars.

Anton Alen, who was promoted to third overall when Giandomenico Basso and Guy Wilks had punctures, saw his challenge come undone when he tore a wheel off in the stage. The car is being brought back to Vyborg where it will be repaired to restart tomorrow morning under Superally regulations.

Alen's dramas see his team-mate Basso restored to third place, almost two-and-a-half minutes clear of Aleksandr Zheludov's Peugeot 207. Charging up behind the Russian, however, is the Proton Satria of Guy Wilks, who is clawing back time lost with his earlier puncture and set the third fastest time through the Losevo stage.

Franz Wittmann is back up to sixth place for Ralliart, his battle-worn rear differential still holding out over the gruelling Russian terrain. Promoted to seventh is Kaspar Koilta's Honda and in eighth now is Boris Zimin's Evo IX.

Of the 15 IRC crews competing in the Rally Russia, 14 have started the final day's running. The only retirement unable to restart under Superally is Vadim Mikhailov, the 2WD Cup winner from 2008, whose engine was beyond repair.

Overall leader Juho Hanninen's lead has been cut back to 57s as he attempts to use his advantage to hold out against a barrage of fast times from his rivals and not risk cutting a tyre or bringing about a mechanical problem.

"It has been perfect so far," said Hanninen. "We had no punctures, we made no mistakes and we had no problems with the car. Now I'm driving more carefully. For me, it's not big shame if I lose some stages."

His team mate Kopecky meanwhile is pressing on. "Second would be great," he said. "Last year too, I was second, but there was one rock that I didn't see and I lost it like this. This year I'm not pushing so much, I just try to stay on the road, looking for the rocks and the stones, avoiding problems and punctures."

Overall SS12 PEREVOZNOE 1

Anton Alen's rapid progress continues, with the Abarth driver just 0.3s off Hanninen's time through the Perevoznoe stage. All else remains in good order - with the exception of the Peugeot 207 of Russian national champion Aleksandr Zheludov, who suffered mechanical problems in the stage. As a result Franz Wittmann lost a few seconds through the stage when he got stuck behind the ailing Peugeot, and Superally returnee Kaspar Koilta, the 2WD Cup leader, is promoted back to the top 8 after restarting this morning.

Once more Anton Alen led the chase in his Abarth Grande Punto, but ended up fully 11.8s off his countryman's time, followed by Kopecky, Wilks and Basso.

"It's frustrating to be so fast today after the suspension broke yesterday," said Alen. "I was hoping my bad luck would stop here, but apparently not yet. So we're going to see what happens."

Overall SS14 DUBININO 2

The penultimate stage of the Rally Russia produced no great surprises, although Guy Wilks was slowed when he picked up a puncture in the Proton and, following on from yesterday's jack debacle, continued on the flat to the end of the stage.
