Default tires size question for stock sti BBS rims

I am running cobb springs and 18 x 8.5 volk time attacks currently with 255/40/18 T1R's and they do not rub.
Would that also mean that 255/40/17 would fit with the stock BBS's without rubbing?

thanks

255/40R17 are small than 255/40R18, so I don't see why not.

How do you figure? They should have the same section width, but it will vary by tire.

A 255 40 17 should fit without rubbing on any 05+ sti.

Why such a wide tire? It'll look like its bulging out. I'd stick with a 225 or 235at the most. You don't want the overlaping sidewalls, it's bad for cornering (folding in).

Your saying that you would recommend a 255 on an 8" rim? What about sidewall pressure, not to mention that he'll be logrollin.

First of all, he stated they are 8.5" wide wheels.

Second of all, yes.

ps- You're.

That's not his question. He asked if a 255 would fit a STOCK BBS wheel which is a 18x8. It's an 8 inch wheel not an 8.5. It will fit but it's definately not the best setup. Please read carefully

Correction: the stock wheel is a 17x8, and there is a good chance that It'll rub in the rear depending on camber

Correction to the correction. They are 17x7.5.

Sorry, but this is a correction to the second correction. He has an 06 sti with the stock BBS rims. They are definately 17x8's. I believe that the 04 sti's have the 17x7.5 rims.

This is a non-correction to your correction of my correction. Did not know that the 05+ was different. I stand corrected.

Research first, post second...

Depending on the tire, sidewall flex may be a non-issue and easily cured with a couple more PSI. No "logrolling" what-so-ever. Very very popular setup.

My 255 RT615's on 8" wheels in the mid-high 30's were great. Not 070 great, but still, a nice crisp turn in.

See below...

They have been perfectly fine for me. No issues, no odd wear.

Actually, the only issue is that the rear tires tend to rub the trailing arms a tad on some harder bumpier corners (only way I know this is because there are some soft black scuffs on the trailing arms from the tires) even though there is physically 1/4"-3/8" clearance static.

A +48mm wheel (such as the rotas) would work great on this setup.

I am on Pinks with Racecomp camberplates running -2.0 front and -1.6 rear camber.

Really rolling logs huh?!

Please refer to the original question. He states that he's lowered on cobb springs which are a 2" drop in front and 1.5" in the rear. You're on pinks which are not that low. True that you're tires do not logroll, but you have the 615's. I've seen other brands which do protrude on an 8 inch rim. And the overall ride height of the tire will definately throw off your odometer. That's ALOT of tire, not to mention the added stress on your bearings, drivetrain, etc. You're slower because of the added weight and size. It makes absolutely no sense to go that big if you can get the same result with a smaller tire with sticker compound.

Not to continually drag this on, but you yourself admit that these 255's don't perform as well as the stock 225 070. WHY then get the large tire? Is it just for looks? What's the deal?

He said they don't turn in as well. There's a lot more to a tire than just turn in.

True, there is more to a tire than turning. However, with all the added outer rotational mass of a 255, you wont benefit on the straight away either

Whatever. It's my opinion and the opinion of tire manufactures like Falcon, BF Goodrich, etc., that the optimun setup for a 255/40/17 lies between the rim size of 8.5-10 inch. No one in this forum including so called suby-gurus can argue the facts.

And of course you'll find that no one here has argued that. Are you implying we have?

For the street, a 255 is a waste, 8.5"+ wheel or not. Their benefits can't be taken advantage of and the drawbacks will be felt. All the things you mentioned are of course correct...That's something we all post here on a daily basis.

As far as other 255 bulging more on an 8" wheel, your research should have showed you that a 255 RT615 and all RT615's for that matter have very very oversized section-widths. Its actually a 265. It's just about the widest of the 255's out there.

BTW: Who the heck is Falcon?

P.S. The above pic wasn't mine...but I did run them as well in the past (8"/255).

I'd hate to see the look on your face if you saw 275's on a 7.5" wheel!!!
