OTter Dog Lovers: You have a Dog Park?
I'm working with our local municipality on a project, and sort of stumbled into another project involving a dog park. There are a lot of residents here who want a dog park, but the city is trying to do some research to figure out what the best course of action should be.
So, I thought OT might be able to help! Note: this was not solicited by the city, just me and my own curiosity. So, tell me about your local dog park, if you have one. How is it laid out, big dog and small dog areas? Doggie water fountains on premises? How do they handle the regulations regarding permit, etc? Do you have to have a special tag to use the park? Where is the park located? Good doggie-poop bags and receptacle provided? Thanks for any help you can provide, OT! Joo rock as always... and you might be able to help make our local pooches happier pups. -Porter

DISCLAIMER: I don't have a dog.
However, there are "doggy runs" all over the city, especially in high-density residential areas where homes just don't have a yard to allow for pups to get out and frolic freely. Typically they look to be large, featurless fenced-in areas. I don't think that there's a separation for big or small dogs. Quote:

Our dog park is pretty basic. About an acre of fenced in area. 10% of for small dogs, the rest for large dogs. It's part of the animal shelter. No special tags needed. Bring your own water, there's a couple large bowls by the gate. There's 4 trash cans for poop, by each trash can are a bunch of plastic grocery bags.

Fairfax County, VA has a lot of them that we frequent. They are large open areas with lots of trash receptacles and some benches around the edges. There is just one area. No baggie dispensers and no water dispensers. People just bring their own baggies and water.

I use my backyard. And as small as my dog is it's like the Amazon when I don't cut the grass.

Our local dog park is really nice! Big and small dogs are segregated, and each features a lake, although the one in big dog territory is much larger. There are several covered pavilion areas with concrete benches, and doggie water fountains. There are quite a few poo-bag dispensers, each one is attached to a trash can, which there are quite a few of also. There is a double entry type gate for each park so you don't let someone else's dog out when you come in and leave. All in all, it's well thought out and we always have a good time there.

It would be nice to have a separate area for small dogs...for sure.
Now that I think about it, one of the parks in FFX did have that, but the other we go to doesn't. |

That's all the off leash parks in our area. Magnuson is the largest and most complex. Two great featrues there include a dog shower as you exit and a double gate system before you get to the water so that your dog can't run off by himself to the lake. Make sure to have lots of garbage cans. http://www.coladog.org/ These guys do a lot of the maintenance on a volunteer and donation basis. |

We have several dog parks here, but I only use the larger, rural ones. Of the two dog parks I use, one is about 2 acres and the other is maybe 100 acres.
There is no seperate areas for large and small dogs....it doesn't seem to be a problem. The parks are fairly wild with lots of prairie grass and there are mulch covered trails throughout. They have bags and garbage recepticles all over, and the smaller one has agility equipment recently donated by someone. Otherwise, there is nothing fancy about these places other than some picnic tables and a small shelter at the big park. We pay a $20 annual fee which allows us to go to any dog park in the city/county; however, you can pay a one-day fee at the park (maybe $3?). The annual fee comes with a dog tag that needs to be on the collar. As for splitting large and small dogs, I really don't see a need to do that. Most of the small dog owners play around the enterance anyway, and you never see a problem with the larger dogs playing with small ones (they're all dogs). Edit: I should add that having a double gate is great, especially for busy parks. |

Our city's is pretty busy and seems to be a hit. Per their site, it won second place out of 10 favorite dog parks around the country by Dog Fancy. I don't own a dog, so that's all I have. There are a lot of pics and info here: http://www.pawparksanford.org/

The most important feature of our park's dog run is that it has a trap area between two gates. Dogs can really lose themselves when in the excitement of company with other dogs, and there is a risk that a dog can bolt when the gate opens. The trap yard ensures your dog is safely contained if he makes it through the gate being opened by another person.
It also has a doggie bag dispenser and good receptacles, but there is no fountain. Here in the desert, you bring a bowl and water, and expect that all the dogs are going to be sharing all the bowls. |

http://www.ci.boca-raton.fl.us/parks...rk/dogpark.htm The BEST designed and kept dog park I have ever seen. 4 areas....2 are closed at all times to 'heal' the grass so they don't turn into mud pits. I would guess they swap them about once a month, maybe more. There are two areas that are open - Big dog & little dog. 30lbs is the cutoff, although you will see the little Big dogs (Jack Russels, etc.) In the big dog side. I would say are about 2-3 acres each (not a good judge of it), all grass, and maybe a dozen-20 trees. There is a concrete walkway leading to a central area with benches inside each. Each has two water fountains, with a people fountain up top, and a dog bowl fountain thing at the bottom. It has the trap that Imprezton has. The two gate system. Plus a third one to get to the traps. inside this central area are two dog washes with hoses to hose off your dog. There are doggie bags provided on site. There is a daily city crew that comes and changes the garbage cans and picks up poo. Fences are 3-6 feet all the way around. ALSO: I can't find the article now, but Delray Beach (the town to the north of Boca) was leery of putting in a dogpark for fear of large dogs fighting and the cops having to come and put down dogs and so on. Check sunsentinel.com or the palm beach post for the article if you are interested. They put one in anyway. After a couple years, they took a look at the calls from the park, and overwhelmingly, they were in response to old ladies fighting with each other. old ladies that believe that 'Precious', their untrained pomeranian psychopath of a dog, could not have possibly attacked another dog. I personally have seen 3 calls to a dog park, and all three were in response to the old women fighting with each other over who's ****zu started the fight. It's open to Boca residents for free, and outsiders have to pay for a parking permit (the biggest parking permit stick I have ever seen, btw). GeoB Last edited by Gcbinc; 01-08-2007 at 11:45 AM. Reason: Adding that it has what Imprezton's has. |
