Ans2k, where do you live that you need to push deep snow so often that you need extra ground clearance (you should update your profile data so that this info is available to everyone)?

I live in western NYS (Rochester suburb). We get a lot of snow, but as such the Dept. of Transportation in my neck of the woods is heavily prepared with a lot of snow plows. So as long as I stay on top of my own driveway with my snowblower (I do), I almost never need to push snow with the front of my car.

I also travel to the Adirondacks in the winter, and they get much more snow than we do in Rochester. But again, they're prepared for it, so it gets plowed quickly.

I never pushed snow with my VW TDI, and that car had 1" less ground clearance than the Impreza.

I am originally from Bryant Arkansas, but I travel alot. In AR, we do not have plow trucks on stand by. We have them brought in from neighboring states, which also take about three days. I'm in the middle of the state, so you have to imagine that if the trucks are coming from outside the state to inside the state, it takes a while for the snow to get plowed. So when it snows, and doesn't get plowed and you have slight warming during the day and freezing tempts at night. The snow melts a little and re-freezes, basically a layer of ice.

This is the norm and the expected. If it snows in AR, you're going to be stuck for a while. Last year, when the snow storm hit. It only snowed 6-8 inches total. But with the lack of plows, it was 6-8 inches of hard ass snow in the next few days. Cars/trucks were swerving all off the road. There was a 15 hour delay towing the dumbasses out of the ditches. Hell, even the tow trucks were getting stuck. It doesn't snow here much, usually one or two days. So it isn't financially smart for a state to have expensive snow plowing equipment on stand-by.

Last year, I went to St. Louis in the March when they had their snow. I was thinking, "Oh, great. I guess I am not going to get anything done and stay inside my hotel." To my surprise, they have plows everywhere and constantly driving. They cleared the highway so beautifully. They drove diagonally side-by-side to clear all the lanes. In Arkansas, when the plows do come, it's usually just one plow truck that does whole highway, so one lane every pass.

TL;DR Arkansas doesn't have snow plow trucks. So you're going to have to plow it yourself.

You know what really sucks, is that it could take longer than 3 days for trucks to get here. If the other states are having snow storms, the trucks have to clear it there first then they come to us. Just thinking about it, I think the majority of the truck comes from MO. I can't imaging TX or MS or West TN having a lot of snow if any, maybe OK. If AR and MO get hit with the same snow storm, AR is going to be screwed for a while. I think the longest time between when the snow hits the ground and the trucks came was about two weeks. By the 5th day, it was just ice and there was no way in hell, anyone was going anywhere.

Hell, I remember living in Los Angeles for awhile.. Up in the valley, if it rained, you'd think there was a blizzard out people were so ridiculously cautious. lol I'd love to see them come to PA and drive in a foot of snow. We get a foot of snow with a sheet of ice and we're like pffffft.

I wasn't aware ark didn't have much of a hwy cleaning program. I've noticed our state (modot) has really ramped up the amount of road clearing trucks, as have the county and city depts. 5 years ago you would drive a day or two before roads are really cleared. Now its bladed and sprayed as snow falls. However, to a fault though. It's common for the top layer of snow to be cleared and ice left exposed. This takes the traction away. I know you have to clear it to clear it so to speak, but I'd like a little left for those of us that enjoy playing some ;-)
We used to have 12-16" snows all of the time. Now if we get 5-8 " it's a big one. Guess that's good for the impreza though. Much over 7-8" and your repairing front end id imagine.

OK, thanks for explaining why you've had to push snow in the past.

Oh, there is plenty to have a lot of fun in. Anything more than 9 and i doubt the impreza is going anywhere. 8 was already a challenge that i dont want to repeat.

No problem. We dont have a blizzard problem, we just dont have the equipment to clear it.

Yeah, since the winter tires are designed to be used below 45F, I too have been holding off until the temps begin staying below that just so they are not being ground down needlessly. We have had some cold and a blast of snow that really crippled everything for a day, but things have really not arrived yet.

On another note, as was mentioned in another post, I would agree that it is not as much the amount as the available equipment to deal with it. In the NE Ohio snow belt, the State, County, and even Township, are well equipped to deal with things. Usually it is the prolonged snow combined with wind that makes things interesting. That and the lake not freezing over. I can understand how the Southern regions that seldom get snow can easily be crippled with less than we take for granted.

In a former life, my brother in law worked for the State. They start with the major roads that lead to the hospital and work their way out from there. I don't know if that is how everyone operates, but that seems a logical approach.

Just had our 1st snow fall. Took my 2 month old '13 Sport out to play and see how it handles as this is my 1st Subaru. Well handled as expected with the stock tires. Only thing is the car made the normal ABS sound when sliding but also a repetitive cluncking/clicking from the right front. Also does it when the right front loses traction. Now to find out if this is a Subaru thing or a problem. Then onto buying rims and snow tires.

I'm guessing that's just a combination of your ABS and Traction Control doing their jobs.

I have snow tires on my Impreza, and it's a beast in the snow. These are the games I play with my Impreza:

Well hopefully that's it. Pretty annoying actually but is it normal in a slide going forward for it to be just the right front? Still learning about this car

That's where the master cylinder is, and IIRC the VDC (trac. control) can use your brakes so it makes sense to me. Someone might have a real explanation though.
