If avcs goes out of whack something can smack into something etc. It's just 1 less thing to go wrong or worry about. If it limits avcs, What happens if it exceeds that? Boom

Hello Guys! Need your suggestions please.
I own an 05 STi currently at stg-2 STI (TXS TBE, APv2 and crawford AOS). I'm in my mid 30's have wife and kids and decided to keep our STi as a daily driver. My STi has 82K miles and I recently got her checked out by my local tuner. Tuner says I need a new turbo as my VF-39 is going out. I don't want to put the same turbo in so... Long story short..., I'm looking into different turbos and need knowledgeable suggestions. I'm willing to do supporting modifications (injectors, fuel pump, EBCS and more) For several days I've been researching turbos...and I have been reading into the FP TD05 68hta but then I stumbled on this 71hta (hence why I'm writing on this thread) . The question is; -Would this turbo be reliable for long term use (years of use when reliably tuned)? -Can I use this turbo to grow with future modifications (big intake, headers, intercooler)? -Are there different configurations for this turbo? If so then, What configuration should I go for for my 05STi? -IF no for this turbo, then what should I go with? I don't want to spend more then $1400 on a turbo if this helps. I would like fast spool (faster then stock if possible and nice top end but I don't need a crazy fast car... just a little more to enjoy since I'm replacing the stock turbo... O! I will auto-x it and road-coarse it once in a while.... I really look forward to your suggestions and info.. many thanks yous in advance... |

Faster than stock spool doesn't exist.

Sure it does. Something that is more efficient and has less inertia would spool faster then a VF39 especially TS.
BTW avcs couldn't ever cause a valve to drop. Ya if it advances or retards too much it could get bend but never drop. AVCS rarely malfunctions during operation after time but usually on first startup on a motor where the cam gears were sitting without being cleaned or debris gets in them(something else is gonna happen first if that does). |

I had one of these turbos on order, but FP can't really say when they'll ever be available. I'm thinking about going rotated now.

spool a little slower and have a lot more top end I disagree, a 16g will have same overall performance. a good tune will make a vf 39 not drop off up top. |

I think you stumbled onto a good choice for a turbo. You will want the 8cm housing, as the 2.5L will want the extra surface area to get the turbine moving and get the gasses out. The 71 utilizes the HTA aero, which IMO, is one of the best 'billet' generation designs. The 7 blade wheel is very efficient and does what it is supposed to do. You will have no issues with longevity, if you use good oil and service your car appropriately.
The turbo can make power in the right hands(tuner). It will be a blast on the road course or autocross circuit. The spool characteristics will be similar to stock, but it will not fall off up top. Do not consider the 10CM option,as bigger is not necessarily better. This turbo was not designed to be used with that housing when it was conceived at FP. The idea was to fit a particular nice, and it does so exceptionally well. I would be happy to discuss any questions you may have about your build, turbo selection, or any other race related topics. You can reach me on the forums, via email, or call me at the shop...whatever works best for you. [email protected] 732 326 0090 Cheers, John Quote:

This looks like a badass turbo, but for 100$ cheaper you can get an HTA green that will make more power.

It has already been stated by me and others... This is just a 68HTA with a new compressor cover. Nothing else has changed....

That is just not true...
As has been stated in this thread The old 68HTA had a 68/68 compressor wheel and the new 71HTA has a 71/68 wheel. |

I have done my research also...Except i have done it on Subarus. My car was the mule for the prototype of this turbo. So for several months i was the only one with it. I have spoken to Rob in person and at great length about it during the design process and helped provide data back about the performance of the turbo. Statements like the one about the compressor cover being the only difference (even if it is on the DSM/EVO) is how things get screwed up and misinformation gets spread. I understand your experience is with DSM's...but this is a Subaru forum, and we all know that DSM's and Subarus respond drastically different to the exact same turbo. I can tell you from what i have observed on my own car that the Subaru HTA71 is nothing like the Subaru HTA68 on pump gas. |

I seem to be one of very few with strong HTA68 pump results. Lots of supporting mods, however, including 10cm hotside. Generated 383/405 on 92 pump at 21.8 psi, with 350tq by 3400rpm and holding 350hp through 7k. Not a bad powerband.
I'd love to see what it would do on E85. I'm guessing it would run pretty close to the HTA71. I can't see the HTA71 as a significant upgrade for myself, if at all. Would be curious to bolt one to my 10cm hotside and see what it could do if someone were to hand me one, however... |

My experience goes into the Subaru world also so don't take it the wrong way but from my understanding the reason for the redesign was because they couldn't get parts for the 68 at that time and Rob? Or somewhere else there threw this together and started trying it haha. Turned out to be a better turbo and sounds amazing with the new cover |

It's not really a redesign...they will be offering this as well as the HTA68. It turned out to be a different turbo. |

I've been speaking to the rep @ www.6starspeed.com and basically he states since the 68HTA is not made anymore then they state that going with this specific turbo would be the next better option.
Pleas advise... Thanks.. http://6starspeed.com/tdbabetu1.html |
