guys who tell u this don't even know what's a screwdriver looks like lol
i just took it apart piece by piece, making notes and taking pictures (because i'm too cheap to buy shop manual)
...came across this tread because i need to take apart some stubborn subie tranny =o)
carry on kids!
Good luck.

If you get it done let us know how it goes and post some pics.

You asked for it
Ok,
2011 WRX tranny. mileage 20K (competition car, no warranty)
problem - 5th gear kicks back and no reverse after meeting with a big stone which was running across the road

removal and tearing apart is pretty much straight forward.
just unbolt everything You see and take notes where goes what
You'll find some difficulties in removing midsection but just wiggle it around a bit (shift rod in neutral in my case)
but could be in 5-reverse position
don't try to pull out reverse checking mechanism, just lose it a bit.
(it's a small cover on the left bolted to the case by 10mm bolts)

i'm not sure if You can see in picture but what the problem was:
check ball left a tiny little imprint on the grove of shifting rod and it was enough
for the rod not to slide into sleeve (filing it off did the job)

all the gears were fine (after all there're only 20K old)
assembling: the hardest part was lining up shifting rods because
they have so many check balls and pins and all of them have to be lined up in certain order.

apply a thin layer of silicone on mating surface. bolt them together by hand first and after 20min tighten up
new gasket goes between the housing and extension
had to wiggle a bit to place extension because shift arm has to line up
with shifting rods and at the same time into a reverse checking mechanism
again i find it's easier w/shift rod in 5th-reverse rod position

shifting is smooth in all gears and all is good as new now
last pic of center diff and final shaft.
then final extension goes on a top of it. again silicone applied.

working by myself w/a car on car stands took me 3hrs to remove the tranny
1 hr to tear it down
about 3hr to assemble (because of those stubborn shifting rods)
and about 3 hr to install
conclusion: working on manual transmission is much easier than on automatic.
and subie tranny is no different than any other - bunch of gears and shafts/rods placed in a box in certain order.
when You do it make sure take notes/pictures of every step you do
or better yet get Yourself a shop manual,
they're available free on the net.
and don't listen to anyone who tells You it can't be done!

I really wanted to say something sarcastic about this ridiculous thread, but I'll stick with telling you how cool it was of you to add something constructive to it after all that time. Thanks, man!

thanks guys.
i just wanted to make a point here:
anything can be accomplished if one puts his (or her's lol) mind to it
surely i wouldn't recommend it to some one who never changed oil or brakes on a car
but those who organised and have some more than basic tools i'd encourage doing it.
keep it clean and use Your common sense.
after all people who work in transmission shops are not gods,
they're regular guys as You are and were kids just yesterday
...full rebuild will take a bit more time and one will need some measuring tools as well.
and what's interesting 2014 STi tranny is pretty much the same as 1993 subie tranny only couple more pieces added
so You don't have to look for 2014 shop manual. 1993+ will work

PS. i changed a few subie clutches and at first i had to pull tranny by hand
and man it was hard lol!
but then i fabricated a bracket and bolted it down to a car jack which made pulling it out much easier.
...maybe i'll take a pic of it later if someone interested =o)

here it is:
it's H shaped and tranny is held by rear mount (freely) bolted to the bracket
mid section of the bracket bolted down to the car jack
(i drilled holes and threaded them)
doesn't make too much sense to fab it if You intend to use it once only
but if You and Your friends are into racing you're gonna need it every once in a while (if you know what i mean )

made in a rush, it looks ugly but gets the job done just fine

Since this thread is finally gaining traction with useful info, has anyone attempted replacing synchros?

Ohh I like that interesting trans fixture . Does the front arm pieces bolt to the trans (side retainer lock bolt?) or does the trans just rest on it?

I have been using this method for a few years. It has worked great for 5MTs, 6MTs, allows easy adjustment to trans angle, most importantly a one person operation, and cheap. This might help be helpful as well. *Honestly I pull 5MTs by hand and onto my chest (faster) but 6MTs are way to heavy for that. However I am getting older and will probably use the tools to remove my next 5MT.

If you're without a lift, measure the trans height so you know how high (approx 18"-20") you need to lift the car and securely place jack stands. A sheet of cardboard under the trans helps slide it over the floor underneath the car.
I made up some wood blocks that fit around the front strut towers then span a 2x4 across the engine bay. I then get one of those cargo straps with the pinch lock (not the ratcheting type). The cargo strap is attached to the 2x4 and then the pitch stop bolt on the trans bracket. The pinch-type strap holds the weight while I raise/lower the trans or adjust trans angle. I just have to reach my arm up to pull the strap tight or loosen the pinch lock.
I have another short 2x4 that was drilled with holes matching those offset trans mount bolts. The trans mount just drop right in there. I use a floor jack to lift/lower the tail and adjust trans angle. Although I might lift some portions of your bracket to make something that will not allow the jack to slip from under the wood block I'm using now.
I just need to get around to building a engine holding fixture like the Subaru tool. Have been using a smaller jack and a block of wood to keep the engine from flopping forwards.

I agree that the taboo nature of the Subaru gearboxes undercuts what most of us are looking for within NASIOC. I (and trust that others) weed out NASIOCs technical info from the noise and use what is left as guidance or to catch things that I have overlooked. Sure, some will take on a project that is over their head....but "insert user name here" is not their mommy. That is the process of gaining experience. "Provide accurate info and let them make their own decisions."
I also suspect that if one was to post an accurate and useful guide on inner gearbox work....it might get "lost" somehow.

my first tranny i removed using wooden blocks and a car jack as well
but man it's so unstable!
in my case front end of the tranny is able to slide from side to side like 10-15 degrees
and can be moved up and down for lining it with the clutch and mounting points
while held and flexing on rear rubber mount

What a jerk. Are YOU content that you and Scotty poisoned a major search result with annoyed chatter when I was/am rebuilding my 5mt, insulting OP constantly instead of posting links for others like me to follow? GD man you need to retire from moderating if that's the case. I wouldn't have mentioned something if YOU hadn't come back to the thread to defend yourself the years later. People change sometimes for the better but obviously not you.

I'm going to just stick to clubwrx and rs25 because of all the venom on NASIOC...

Great video that shows how our 5mt's work! This guy is a boss and not afraid of the terror that is the Subaru transmission! Lol. I'm tearing apart one I my multiple 5 speeds out of curiosity because if I **** it up, who cares? It's a 2002 Trans with 120,000miles that was having 317awhp beating the **** out of it. It's worth almost nothing. Maybe I should display it in a glass case actually, anybody else have a '02/'03 5 speed that held together with power numbers above 300 at the wheels?

Thank You NASIOC.

I know I'm going to get flammed for bringing this thread to life but I couldnt help myself lol. I've been lurking nasioc since forever because i own a wrx and this forum has proven to be very useful in terms of technical information but let me get to the point, if I listened to people who told me what I can and cannot achieve id be one useless handicapped individual. Working on Cars is not rocket science or open heart surgery lol. Unibomber you must have some sort of inferiority complex and the information you provided was a waste of words I created this account just to tell you this I'm dan hello nasioc!

I'll leave here for future generations, the fact that the Rusti Rallies team on Facebook (facebook.com/rustirallies and yes, it's my page) is presently troubleshooting a Subaru 5MT that presented fifth (and others) gear pop-out. Date stamp is around July 20th, pictures and video mostly detailing how it functions, but also explaining disassembly where relevant.
