OMGHi2U Borla Hush vs Oval Prodrive (my opinion)

I replaced my oval prodrive axleback muffler with a borla hush. I did this because in the future I'm going to get a 3" downpipe and wanted to mate it with a 3" catback.

Sound: I have to say the prodrive has a better burble and is quieter at normal driving 2.5 to 3k rpm. Overall I like the prodrive better and would recommend it if you like the looks of the oval tip and 2.5" diameter isn't a factor.

Fit: Hard to compare since one is an axleback compared to a catback. I had a little trouble getting the hush just right. Plus I have a subaru TRAILER HITCH. It was a little too much one way it got close to hitting something, too much the other would got close, had to push muffler forward and to the center of the car to clear the hitch. BUT once there all is well and looking pretty. Twisted the car going out of a driveways, hit several speed bumps, and rev'd the engine; no hitting so far

Looks: The Prodrive oval tip doesn't bug me and looked nice on the wagon with a hitch. But now that I have the hush on and got it lined up, I perfer the Borla Hush. Not just because it looks stock, but also the tips fits closer to the hitch/bumper. Its a nice tight fitting package with less hanging down look. A good phrase, its a cleaner look. The prodrive had a good size gap between the hitch and oval tip. Both were on stock rubber hangers.

UPDATE: It took a short trip to see a problem with the hush for "my ears". The majority of the time the sound is fine and isn't much louder than the Prodrive. All was fine until I hit some hills. The exhaust sound resonates in the wagon at certain rpm's, engine load, and mph. Normally this would be liveable but we are planning to move to the mountian areas of NC, TN, VA. If we were staying in Indiana and didn't have a wagon, I would still give the hush two thumbs up.

Anybody want to buy a 2 day old Borla Hush muffler, make me a realistic offer.

Pic of Hush with trailer hitch. It tucks up nicer than the prodrive, but it's a tight fit.

Hush mounting arm comes close to hitting the mounting bracket of the hitch.

Prodrive has tons of room for a hitch, but unfortunatly it hangs down farther and doesn't match up as nice at the Hush.

Do you think the resonation would be a problem in the sedan as well?

No not at all. A friend has a Cobb stage 2 tipped with a Prodrive on his sedan. His exhaust sound is very different (resonance & droning) than my wagon with the Prodrive.

Thanks for the comparison. I always wondered which one was quieter.

Thanks from here too. Having switched from the TXS magnaflow, to a Prodrive oval tip, and now to the oem STi muffler, I was considering the Hush, b/c I miss the nice burble from my Prodrive. Can't stand droning, so that option is out now.

I'm switching from a Prodrive to a Hush on Friday. I need a 3" catback for my VF30; the Bosal DP/2.5" midpipe + Prodrive axleback isn't cutting it. I'm going to Dynamat the cargo area to take care of any droning. My Borla header will make it even louder, but also meaner-sounding than the above example, with a nice throb to it. It's getting dynoed again on April 3rd on my usual dyno, so I'll be able to know how much power it added.

Let us know if the dynamat helps. I talked to WRX03 about doing that to his too.

how do you like the sound of your setup? Thinking of going hush and probably running just 1 cat.

thanks

That pictures seems awfully similar to the tanbe hyper medallion minus those 2 extra pipes sticking out the back of the muffler.

I wonder if replacing the Borla tips with resonated tips would help with the droning?

It was FS, now it's getting shipped to a buyer in CA this weekend. I'll be at KTR at 10:30 or so, on the dyno at noon. No wait, I might show up earlier to see the M5 getting dynoed. I better be in the top 5 or I'll have to upgrade even further!

I think it would. It was recommended that I do that with my since-departed Apexi catback.

sounds good to me. i had a nur spec but the neighbors kept calling the popo. it sounds pretty deep. it can easily be heard inside the cabin but it doesn't drone. it really makes its presence known over 3500 rpm.

Got a Borla Hush as well, nice quiter exhaust, but still noticeable. No droning for me either. With load, the exhaust gets deeper and louder. Good/cheap exhaust if you don't want that awesome sounding burble get tooo loud.

I got the Hush installed last night, by Rich of Daddy's SCP in Leominster, MA. It is somewhat louder than my Prodrive, but still somewhat quiet. I mean, it's got a great roar to it, but it's not silly-loud. It is present in the cabin at all RPMs, but that may also be due to the PDE uppipe, Bosal downpipe, and especially the Borla header. There's no droning, however, at least compared to the droning of an Apexi GT-Spec. It looks nice, with tips slightly bigger than stock, and a little meaner looking. It definitely made it sound meaner.

The power feels a bit more evened out, it's got more balls on the highway. I'll post more info after I get it dynoed again in a couple weeks.

Here's a sound clip of my car with the Hush: http://www.daddysscp.com/nasioc/BorlaHushClip.wmv

Hey Guys,
For those of you that got the Borla, I've got a loudness comparison question fo you (didn't want to start a new thread for this):

I bought a 2003 WRX last week and the guy had put an HKS Hi-Power catback on, and I think it's a little too loud for my taste. I'm looking to order the Borla catback with some up/down pipe combo tomorrow. Can you give me any feedback on how loud the Borla setup would be compared to the HKS?

Thanks for the help,
-DT
