You said the lights dim when you try to crank, but nothing happens? That makes it sound like the starter motor is drawing current, but not spinning. If the starter is drawing current, you can eliminate the ECU, clutch switch, etc., because the ECU is trying to turn the engine over. Can you spin the engine by hand with a breaker on the crank pulley? What you've described makes it sound like a seized motor.

FWIW, when I put my engine back in, it would not crank. Had the same symptoms as yours. Primed, everything was fine, starter was good etc etc.
I ended up just throwing a breaker bar on the crank bolt cause I thought I seized it somehow. I turned it about 1/4 turn and it was fine, hopped back in the car and it turned over and fired right up. I have no idea why it did it, but it takes two seconds to try. Joel |

Now that you mentioned this, I recall I had this years ago with my Maserati Biturbo, after doing headgaskets and it sitting a while.
I was thinking it had seized as well and I also turned it by hand, with a bar and was fine after that. Maybe this happens with some engines after they sat. |

have you checked to make sure the crank position sensor is still attached? if it was not connected or not working it will not allow you to turn the engine over.

Crank position sensor is attached. I have 22mm socket for the crankshaft but I need a 1/2 wrench, so I'm going out to go get one. The 22mm socket is for my impact gun.

Engine turned over by hand no problem. Tried cranking it by key and nothing.

So the starter is working when you turn the key. ie: making its normal starter noise, but it will not turn over the motor? |

Negative. When I took the starters out and or jumped/bypassed the starter they sounded like spinning without plunging foward and spinning.

So have you bench tested the starter?
Connect to power and ground and jump the terminals together, the gear should spin and move outwards. If it spins but does not move outwards then you probably have a bad starter. If nothing happens then you probably have a bad starter. Have you checked the starter relay? Swap it with another relay of the same kind. If you remove the relay and jump power across the pins does the vehicle crank? |

I talked to him last night. He bench tested the starter. I fact 3 of them. The one that came the motor, one that he bought from here and a 3rd that is a new aftermarket unit.
They all spin with power applied. I don't think the plunger is engaging enough or at all on any of them. The plunger can be manually pull out. 3 bad starters? If the plunger is not engaging fully with power then how would it even be able to contact the flywheel. |

Not sure if it's related at all but my horns don't work either. I hear a click from a relay in the engine bay but no actual horn "beep".

You know all 3 starters could be bad. If the bendix drive (plunger) does engage fully the car will never start.
How far out do they come when you power them up on the bench. |

No good then.
If that bendix drive doesn't come out. Then its not making contact with the flywheel. No start. |
