Default Tighten crank shaft pulley bolt

Hi all, I am new to this forum and relatively new to working on my own car. I can replace accessories but have never worked inside a motor. I have owned a '99 Impreza Sport (my first Subaru) for about a year now. It has been a great little car. A couple of weeks ago the crankshaft bolt that holds on the main drive belt came loose about 80 miles from home. Great little car that it is, I got all the way home with no alternator, air conditioning, and after 40 miles, battery power for lights, etc.

I purchased a 22mm socket and proceeded to take the fans off and tighten the bolt. The bolt itself had no damaged threads and there where no filings so I think it is ok. I found an online manual that said to torque the bolt to 95-97 lb/ft. However, since it is an automatic, once it a little bit tight it turns the engine over despite my best efforts to stop it.

I am assuming there is a method or tool I can use to either lock or hold the drive pulley so I can tighten the bolt. Can anyone give me more information on this?

Thanks,

Jay

Yep, drive, reverse and 1st. The torque converter for the automatic takes the force and the engine still turns.

You should have a newer type pulley....that will make this easy!

This way can be done with out removing the fans

There should be 4 holes in a 12-3-6-9 o'clock pattern around the mane bolt hole. Put a 3/8 6" long socket extension or bolt ( larger the better ) in two of the holes across from each other. Put the breaker bar with the socket on the main pulley bolt. Take another breaker bar - pipe - 24" 1/2 extension and put it in between the two blots and torque one bar against the other.

This way can be done with out removing the fans

Pull the black access plug out at the rear of the engine sort of below the throttle body. You'll see the flexplate under there. Wedge a prybar or big screwdriver in there to hold the engine from turning.

.....I have tried that, its a pain and sketchy. Also if the plug is old and gone brittle it is a PITA to get back in and or cracks Plus if you have TMIC you have to pull it off for access

I just throw the plug out. It's not important. The OP has an OBS, it's not turbo.
