Default Project N2Deep! Some painting done, wheels painted and front flare put on!

So after a year and a half of selling my 07 STi Ltd I have been looking for another cool car to auto cross and track... I looked at everthing from Suby's, Miatas, crx's, RX 7's, 240's and really didn't know what the next project car was going to be... Then found this treasure that's been sitting in someones garage since 92 and picked it up for a steal... It needs a lot of work but is in very good shape body wise.

Saw this one on craiglist! Closet fan of 914's myself. I let a runner get away from me for only $2000, but it was back in high school when I had no cash. My mid-life crisis will consist of swapping an NA built EJ25 into one of these if there are any still left around by then...

Now you have a real PROJECT on your hands! Good for you!

Check this thread out - a good friend of mine in Summerland spent some serious time and energy recreating this gem!

I'll have to wait and see about the power plant for the car. The car was possibly running with a new rebuilt 1.7 but had some issue when the buyer bought it he said he got over his head so the car sat there for ten years.

Mctee that build your budy did on the teener looks sweet. The stock color of my car was metallic forest green like it a lot better then the powder blue it is now.

Not sure what direction I'm going with it yet, more geared towards track build or restore...time and money will tell.

914, **** yeah!

I had one of those back in 93'. It was a 1974 model with the 2.0L microbus engine. I couldn't keep it running for more than a week at a time, but it was still such a cool little vehicle. If it's a 1.7L it's an early model. Is yours a 71-72'? No bumpers, so it's hard to tell.

I'd love to come out and see this in person.

If I can get the engine that is in there running then it will be a while before a EJ swap. I want to drive it around a bit this summer and see what it really needs first, then go from there. Plus my yearly bonus comes in Jan-Feb so that's when all the parts will be coming in.

Steve maybe when I get some stuff clean up in a month or so I'll have you guys over then go to Cat and the Fiddle for some beers.

Good move, exactly what I did with the Miata...keep it cheap at first, see what it needs instead of doing things you may change down the road. I wish I had set up the body/suspension before going into the engine as there was a LOT to be done. Anyways, looks like a fun project. Looking forward to the progress!~

Sounds good man!
It's only a matter of time before that little 1.7L pukes up an oil plug. That's what killed mine back in the day.

It's awesome that there are so many more options, and so much knowledge about the 914 these days. Back in the 90's we had a bulletin board and a monthly mailer for 914 fans.

That would be such an awesome setup in that car.

You've tackled so much on your car.
It's really impressive to see the progress.

Well I had a set back for picking up the car blew my lower back out at work and been having trouble just getting around the house for the last week and half.

So Finally felt a bit better today and picked her up...I'm wondering what I have got myself into, the previous owner just took a bunch of **** a part and put it into random boxes.. There seems to be no rime or reason for the things he did.

I don't know where to even start anyone have any input it would be great.

Anyway gave her a wash to clean off 20 years worth of dirt and grime.

NOW THE MESS OF PARTS AND FIGURING OUT HOW THIS GOES BACK TOGETHER!

Managed to work on the Teener for a few hours today. The car has factory primer, factoy green paint, primer, silver metallic coat for metallic brown (must have been a really nice paint job), clear, primer then horrible powder blue paint job... So I stripped/sanded the front fender, drivers door and the rear trunk. It's a slow tedious process for all the freaking layers of paint.

I have tried everything from wire wheels, paint stripper wheels, Aircraft paint stripper, sand paper.... Best thing I have come up with it 60 grit with all the layers of paint seems to work the best without heating up the panels.. Any feed back or ideas is always welcome.

Not like anyone cares lol but I'll post some progress photo's anyway. I have been stripping paint 6+ layers of it for a couple of weeks about 80% of the body panels are done. I keep getting sick of the panels getting a little surface rust even though I'm dry sanding everything so decided to to give it a coat of self edging primer to protect her.

some before and after shots.

Hey Marlon, are you going to shave the circular front fender side markers?
I did that on mine and it really helped the overall look of the car.

So far, so good!

Getting the tar crap off the interior floors, what a pain in the ass!

Making some good progress, even managed to get head lights working, light, relays and motors all good and they were popping up but they are getting dissasembled to get sand blasted repainted and just cleaned up and re-furbish.

Hood is toast was hoping to save it to save some $$ but will go with a F/G one to keep weight down.

Looks are not the main focus more of a autocross/track build but they are a neat car that's becoming more and more rare.. One thing that's nice because it's a VW/Porsche 914 a lot of cheaper VW parts work on this thing vs Porsche which can be big $$$.

Also where is the best place to buy a JDM front clip from??

Short term goal is to get this stuff done by July/Aug.
1)car stripped to bare metal primed/sealed.
2) Fix any rust issues cut and weld new metal in, it's not bad for a car from the 71's that are known to be rust buckets.
3)Cut fender's and rear 1/4's and put GT Fiberglass wide body kit on, 7" wider in front and 9" wider in the back.
4) Get it running might do carbs and cam for now...efi on car is missing a bunch of stuff
5) Do interior might just paint and do some race buckets for now.
6)Chassis stiffening

Long Term goals
Do a STi version 7 or 8 spec C swap with 6spd
911 suspension swap and 5 bolt rims
front and rear sway bars
Roll cage but might try to do before this summer
Cage but might try to do by summerdepending on funds and timing!

Nice, I love the way it's coming along... I've always liked the classic Porsches. I'm a little sad that you're posting about the project on here though... Makes me want to get back to work on my truck, and I can't do that until the Subaru's done.

Bah, so many projects, so little money.

Keep up the good work!

BTW, with those fender flares, you'll definitely have to shave the marker lights... I can see the flares covering part of the hole for the marker. I would've suggested flush-mount LED truck lights for them, had you decided to leave them in. That's what I'd planned on doing to the Datsun. Grote makes them, and you can get them with clear housings for that uber-Euro look.
