Default Bilstein Strut clunk

I have a set a bilstein strut paired with rce yellow springs for my 2011 wrx. I bought them used from a member on here, and I've been having problems with a clunking noise coming from the front driver side strut.

After searching around on the forums I found a DIY on how to degrease the struts. I was wondering if I can do this with my bilstein struts?

Check your top center nut for the tophat to make sure it's tight

I'll check on the top strut nut again, but I'm pretty sure its not the end links.

you never know, i just had a end link nut loosen a little bit, causing a slight clunk. my bet is on something loose. check top nut, top hat nuts (don't overtighten!) sway bars, check tie rods and ball joints if you're still searching after that.

I checked both the sway bar, endlinks and top strut nut but none of those fixed the problem. Im going to regrease struts this weekend, hopefully that solves the problem.

I would check all the above mentioned. If you bump the car up and down listen near the strut, if it's loose enough you should be able to replicate the clunking. Even if you can't I would still ensure the tightness of the upper nut.

If you've done all the above and it persists (and are confident it is in fact coming from the strut) I would contact Myles at RCE. I haven't personally disassembled a set of these, I would assume removing the lower nut removes the entire insert from the housing, but I would check with them before doing anything. You would also need to be sure your are greasing the correct area inside the housing, you don't want muck to collect on the shaft that could potentially nick a bushing as the shaft moves in/out.

I imagined the bilstein struts are similar to the stock STI struts, but I'll give Myles a call tomorrow to see what he thinking about greasing the struts.

So I took apart the strut yesterday and as soon as I did this whitish liquid came out. There wasn't much grease inside at all, no wonder why it was clunk so bad. I repacked it with Mobile 1 synthetic grease and now theres no noise what so ever.
