You can use 5W-30 in the winter time and switch to 10W-30 in the spring/summer if you want to. The 5W-30 will flow into your engine easier at start-up in the winter time.

not sure if it gets cold in colorado, but I'd say stick to 5w30 in the winter time, as I think you all see subzero tempuratures.

Mobil 1 0w40 is what I use (year-round)

I advice you definately not to use 10w30 for winter, it will be too thick on startup..

I use 5w30 all year round. I don't think 10w30 is needed unless it gets really hot where you live. I'm surprised that the owner's manual didn't have anything. My owner's manual has a little temperature chart telling you when to use what oil.

I'm not. It's probably just another excuse for denying a warranty repair. "Since you use 10w30 we won't repair your blown gaskets for you!" Hopefully we'll never have to deal with this type of situation though.....

Just say you're using 5w30 if the dealer ever asks. (unless its an oil change, which you should do on your own time anyway.. )

I noticed my new Shell station (former Texaco) has gas prices that are 7 to 12 cents higher then every other station around here. I won't be buying my gas there anymore.

Are all Texacos becoming Shell?

Yeah. I'm guessing that by reading posts already presented above, you've likely discovered that 5w oils are more viscous, so they're best for long spells of very cold weather, or engines with tons of lightweight components (like aluminum, molybdum, ect...). My Max is all aluminum in there, so she gets 5w all year round. Before the Max, I owned cars with cast iron components, so 10w was always used. Here, in New England, the REAL cold weather (0-30 F) only lasts for a month or two, so 5w for temperature sake was never all that necisary. I know it gets frigid in part of Colorado, but does it get oppressive in the summer. If you see few days a year above 90, you would do OK with 5w.

Just my 3 cents.

Here in Denver, we had a span of 6 days this summer over 100. There was a stretch of 20+ days over 90.

Too hot for 5w?

Your engine can't really be "too hot" for most viscosities. Unless you're running something like 0w10 which they don't even make...

5w30 is fine, but i PERSONALLY wouldn't reccomend it for the winter, since something like 0w40 will give you much faster warm-up times and keep your engine protected

Any oil with a 30+ hot-viscosity (Xw30+), you'll be okay. You may want to switch to 10w30 or 10w40 when summer comes so that the oil will be thicker during startup, but in a place like Denver where it's 100 in the summer and 0 in the winter, i would use 0w-40. Good for all-around

soo yeah, 0w40 is what i use, and i'm in chicago. Pretty similar climate to where you're at. It gets down to -10 in the winter and 100+ in the summer.

Yeah, but the Shell down the street is literally managed by my next door neighbors. If I don't shop there, they might slip arsenic and razor blades in my kids' Halloween candy...

You can probably try the mobil 1 0w40 synthetic. It's a great oil!

ModVP,

I use Mobil Syntheic Blend, not fully synthetic, 5w30 in my 03 wrx.

Whats are the advantages of running 0w40 over my current oil viscosity? Should the 0w40 be an only winter use oil, or can i run it year round?

Mobil 1 0w40 has been tested by some of the most rigorous European testing procedures.
