From the discussions on the 22B forums and elsewhere, I gather that they make excellent products. The Unichip is very highly regarded and has won at least one ECU comparison test. It was stated that the depth of their R&D was obvious. Performs very well and retains all of the factory safety features for engine durability. As APS themselves say, it is easy to make the EJ20 extremely powerful but the difficult part is to make it powerful AND durable.
They are planning on offering their products here in the States. Based on my research so far, the Unichip would be my choice. |

Jiminy Moses. Am I reading the website correctly: 270 hp with just the chip, no other mods (exhaust, etc.)? What does this thing cost? H-dog, where did you hear that they will be marketing it in the States?

I sure hope they do bring it here. I would be one of the first people in line.

I contacted them, asking if their products would be available here in the US. Their reply was......"We have plans for the US market and are currently in the process of appointing dealers. We also wish to offer local technical support."

On APS site they mention that they only sell in Australia and New Zealand. All others are served thru:
http://www.dastek.co.za/ If you click the unichip link, then at the bottom nearest dealer. They show a list of US distributors. |

FWIW, Our piggyback computer we've been using for awhile is a Unichip.
We have the new version of the Unichip already in stock for the new WRX, and are currently working on staged upgrades, much in the same light as the APS kits. We can do the "e-shift", turbo boost control, and other functions they are offering. I beg some of you not to be so quick to immediately look overseas for parts. We have plenty of talented tuners here in the States that will be making many products available for you. We never had the market to offer this products until now, so give us a chance to play alittle catch up and support your local shops! Thanks, Trey CobbTuning.com |

Trey,
I hate to bring up a sore subject, but were you not the primary source that claimed that the U.S. WRX EJ20 engine had a cast iron crankshaft? SOA and UK sources have since confirmed that the crankshaft is forged steel. Care to comment? Dean |

Very cool. I'd be interested in more info and pricing. I would much rather deal with someone I've heard good things about then a company around the globe I know nothing about.

Trey,
Once you get the chip system here in the US for the WRX, I'll be all over it. Of course, I'm gonna need suspension, a bigger turbo, uprated intercooler...damn, you are a trouble maker! Wilkey |

Very good point dean-o. I do remember that.
I laughed at it myself (Sounds obsured)but many others went nutz. I also remember some blurb about the limit of power on the EJ20 being 200 something like 50. I beg to differ. I hope I don't sound as if I have prejudged you. From my visit to your site, you guys seem to know engine building. Tell me about some of your projects. From the tunning stand point, what management systems do you guys have experience with and do you guys have a dyno on site? Ken |

I would also be interested in a little bit of goodies from your shoppe Trey. I was wondering what price and componets might come with it. I will definately get induction exhaust (down pipe included) and chip. That will probably be the extent of the mods i will ever do to this car, but i would be looking or around 270-280hp, so im sure if u get a good package with the above specs then u will do great business.

In regards to the Unichip, we are scheduled to do quite a bit of Dyno testing before any packages are released. Therefore, packages are still unconfirmed until we determine exactly what works and what does not.
In terms of pricing, we're looking at sub-$600 pricing for the Unichip itself, tuned for one of the forthcoming packages. Additional options include RPM referenced Boost Control, Additional Injector Control, Water Injector System, IC sprayer, Nitrous Control and more. We will be extensive testing on a 2002 WRX to be used to compete in the SCCA National Pro Solo tour, so the products we develop on that car will become available to the public very soon. More information will be on our website shortly. DeanO - I apologize that at first I had NO idea what you were talking about, so I had to do a search on this board (don't read is as often as I should). Obviously I was quoted by someone who had emailed us and was told it was 'cast iron'. Sorry, but it is indeed steel. Obvious I either mis-spoke or was misquoted, but either way here's my answer posted officially by me: it's steel. I don't know the exact alloy, nor the entire process they use, but I do know the EJ25 cranks with some simply nitriding can handle well over 500 engine HP without problem. The EJ20 engines I've built had identical crank material and construction of the EJ25. It's extremely well supported by block halves, not just main caps, and you have 5 bearings holding a very short, lightweight crank in place. Needless to say, it's very well supported. I believe it was Simon @ Prodrive might have mentioned a HP limit due to cylinder wall flex. Though I cannot confirm any exact HP number which this becomes an issue, we offer a process to semi or fully close the cylinder deck which will remedy this. Cheers, Trey CobbTuning.com |

Trey,
Thanks for clarifying the crankshaft issue. That was the informative and authoritative response that was needed. I feel much better about ordering (and upgrading) my 2002 WRX wagon. Dean |
