yes, the block has an open deck design. Although, I don't neccessarily know if that block is the same as our EJ20. I don't see why not. It would be very expensive for Subaru to design and manufacture two different castings.

No, I think that is a closed deck or semi-closed deck block. If you scroll down further you'll see the small areas marked in blue on the block. These indicate the difference between the open deck and closed deck blocks, I think.

That is actually what STi is calling a "semi-closed" deck. They basically added the four supports above and below the bores that you see in the picture. The pair of supports to the left & right of the bores were always there.
Trey Cobb has said he could do this to any EJ series block, but thought that in most cases using one of his fully closed decks would be better. |

Everyone does know that you can add block guards to any block and basically have a "semi-closed" block. Just an FYI for those people that are paranoid and believe the STi block is so much more superior because of it's semi-closed blocked-ness . There could be another thing or 2 that makes the block better but I haven't found anything yet (yet being the magic word).
At this point, I don't know a source for block guards for the EJ20. They make them for other cars so we could probably find a machinist & do a group purchase to save costs. Of course, I'd wait until my warranty is up & add a metal headgasket at the same time. Heh. Just went back and read ColinL response. Sounds like Trey Cobb does block guard type stuff. Here's something VERY interesting. Remember all that controversy about the WRX using a cast crank and the STi using a forged crank? It's hogwash. The STi and WRX use the same crank. Study the brochure carefully. The detail in great specifics all the technical changes made to the car. Everything from the Brembo's to the water injection to the valvetrain. Nowhere do they show a picture of a crank. They do show pistons and rods, but no crank. Therefore I am going with the hypothesis that the crank is:
1) Forged in the WRX. 2) The same crank as is used in the STi. Another cool point: The engine upgrades to go from WRX to STi don't look too complicated. Swap the pistons and rods and get the four tabs welded in, swap the valvetrain and you essentially have an STi engine. Cool! |

But I thought the SCC article stated the WRX had the same valvetrain as the STi and that this was a "secret".

I didn't want to bring this up again, based on all the negativeness surrounding the discussion, but since you just mentioned it.....I contacted SOA again, and explained to them the controversy surrounding the crankshaft material. They replied and indicated that it is forged. (although that's what they said all along)
In addition I posted the question in the 22B forums and was told by someone who, based on his other posts, seemed extremely knowlegeable about the technical aspects of the WRX. He said that all WRX's have a forged crank, but that the STI crank is more thoroughly balanced than the standard crank to allow for even higher rpm. That's good enough for me. I feel much better about the car now. |

Ginseng, I hope they're right. That would mean just swapping the pistons and rods and welding in 4 little blocks and voila: an STi engine! Awesome!
Now about that 6 speed gearbox . . . |

ColinL: how Cobb Tuning does it really doesn't make that much of a difference. they have to add more material around the top of the block. if they use inserts & weld them into place or have some other technique, it's all cool. we all benefit in the end. they're just saying the way they prep the block is better then just inserting block guards/inserts & trusting them to stay in place.

nice pics!! did u guys notice that small STi sticker on the front door? i guess no more big WRX stickers on rear door panel & trunk?

No I believe they are showing the bigger bearings they are using for the STi turbo. These are the bearings that the impeller shaft rotates in.

Did anybody else notice the navigation setup that goes into the pocket on the top of the dash! that is SWEET!
Edit: Did anybody else notice that the specs say that the WRX STI is 1655 KG? Isn't that like 3,600 pounds or so? What am I reading wrong? (I don't speak japanese, just figured the weight would be the one spec in kg). [This message has been edited by XJGPN (edited February 17, 2001).] |

Which wheels are on the STi in the Brochure? Does the STi use a 53mm offset if it runs 225/45-17's? What is the rim width on the STi?

To let you guys know you would have to add the AVCS to you engine to make it a STI type. Not just the pistons and the rods. And I don't know what this would require to add. And the I/C water spray thing was on some older models but I dont think it was on 2000 models.

Also how hard would it be to get a hid system that did the up and down thing like the sti has.
