First snow with AWD
Big snow storm Sunday, and I got to drive on monday morning, on hard packed snow in -10 F degree temps. Big difference from my previous fwd car, at least when it comes to accelerating. Turning and braking is still a bit squirrely on the OEM tires, I plan to get winter tires soon.

I got winter tires last winter but we had crap for snow (which I was ok with lol). AWD is a MUST for me in snow and I cant wait to see what kind of difference they make

I was out all day in the same storm. Cars were stuck all over the place on side streets. My brother in law's street was plowed in and a Camry got stuck trying to drive through the plow bank. There were a few people trying to push him out. I drove right through the plow bank and was on my way. I also passed a VW new Beetle on a hill like it was standing still (it was standing still, spinning it's tires, lol).
All on OEM tires too. |

well that's good that the OEM tires are reasonable enough at least for one season of snow. that's what I'm planning on anyway and next year I'll probably get some dedicated snow wheels/tires.

Three inches of heavy, dense snow today, so I finally got a chance to do the driveway test (130 ft uphill). It was effortless. I did a leisurely 5 mph drive from a stop, no problems, no loss of traction that I could detect. Granted, the sticky snow is easier to grip on, and there was no ice below the snow, so the hardest test is yet to come. But, my previous FWD car would have needed a running start and would have burned rubber half way up to make it, if it made it at all.

. Wait until you get an 8 or 10 inch snowfall and can drive circles around just about everything else on the road. The only problem is that you get stuck behind all the people who's cars struggle in the snow.

This morning, I took a nice 90 minute drive while there were very few cars around (at around 5:30am). In part, to familiarize myself with the AWD aspect of the car (never dealt with one before in the snow), and in part just to help build my sense of patience (I'm much more crankier if the delays on the roads happen shortly after the start of the drive). This photo was taken at around 6am local time. Pretty nice with the AWD side of things, quite the happy experience. Definitely seemed like a "point and go" arrangement. The original Yokohama tires on the car, though, are definitely not remaining on my car for the next winter (will be getting dedicated winter tires next year). They seemed a bit lacking. The Fuzions I had on my old Integra stuck better in the snow than these Yokos, and the Integra was a FWD. |

Yes, I've read that a front-drive car with dedicated snow tires will outperform an AWD car with all-season radials. However, an AWD car with dedicated snow tires is the boss.
Still waiting for our first snow here in Rochester, NY. Can't wait to see how she does wearing Blizzak WS60 snow tires that I bought used with low mileage last summer. |

That's the funny thing. The Fuzions were all-seasons.
EDIT: On a side note, the Fuzion HRi is no longer being sold. Those were the tires I had on my Integra after my OEM Yokos were spent. First time I had the HRi tires on my car was in 2005 or 2006 (can't remember), and then chose them again as replacements when they were bald in 2011. Still had far too much tread left on it when my accident happened. Guess they got taken off the market after 2011. Last edited by lymphomaniac; 12-20-2012 at 07:05 PM. |

I was totally sold on Subaru AWD when I got my '03 WRX. That was a 5 speed. I am looking forward to seeing if the CVT system feels any different on the road. I always felt I could go anywhere I needed to. I don't expect that aspect to change. They're calling for 6+ in the snow belt starting sometime early in the morning. I may be finding out soon.

I'll send you mine.
So far this morning only a cosmetic coating. They're saying 3-5 by quitting time with a total of 7-12 by sometime tomorrow. John |

Well, they're calling for 7 to 13 plus inches of snow from this afternoon through tomorrow. I will be out in it tonight after work, so it's "play-time"! Gotta love Subies with snow tires!!!!

im going to ask a terrible question so bear with me:
why are these cars fun in the snow (with or w/o snow tires)? is it because its easier to drive without sliding? or you can attempt to "drift" where as a fwd wouldnt gain control after losing it? <-- I doubt this one. my first car with awd and not much snow in jersey past couple seasons. it sounds like a stupid question but im curious, thx for your patience lol |

That said, I miss winter tires. Low Rolling Resistance tires + ice = oxymoron. The hills on some of the roads were slushed up and slick, I had to turn TC off to actually make it up (it kicked in constantly while driving straight line just fine). On the other hand, I am wondering if I have a hole in my exhaust. Looks like it is already very rusty. Only had the car since June... Quote:
As for regaining control in AWD vs FWD, never had an issue with a properly equipped (Hakkepalettas) with my old Golf. Get her sideways, point the nose, power out. |
