Doing a 96l conversion cost....
If I could get a 96 impreza L for like 2k or so (don't care if it runs or not)
how much would it cost me to convert it to a WRX (engine and tranny) What woulD I need to do this. I was figuring this: engine, tranny, ecu (the computer), the whole drive train (front, rear, and center difs) bigger brakes (might as well go with the 4 pots), bigger rear brakes, new rims (to fit brakes), tires, possibly new gauge cluster, and a new hood in order to provide air to the intercooler. What do u guys think for total cost (not including body stuff (execpt for the hood) ) keith

who is doing the labor?
Rallispec I believe does them for ermmm 9 grand. depends on how much you pay for a wrecked WRX, the swap itself is pretty easy, the harness a pain but not that bad... Jay |

Dont quote me, but ive heard 9 grand that includes the drivetrain, as for the hood and stuff that would probably be all add on stuff.
your best bet would be to pick up the L if you can, upgrade the suspension, body, brakes etc, in effect prepare the car for a wrx drivetrain, then do the swap. if you had an rs it would be more of a drop the wrx drivetrain in and go. ask your self if you would spend more money updgrading an L to handle a WRX drivetrian, or would it be cheaper to find an RS to just plop the drivetrain in and pretty much be able to drive it out the door. thats what I would look at if I where going to do it. If you're doing it yourself, between $5K and $15K depending on what drivetrain you want.

I like the idea of using USDM stuff, cause its here and parts readily available, will pass emmisions, unless you go crazy.
but just dropping a wrx drivetrain in would be enough for me. Jay |

I'd like to have a US drivetrain and all.
THe only thing I'd like is, 3" exhuast with high flow. Bov (mad rice yo.com ) intake MBC As for suspension and stuff, I'd probably just get KYBs or something, I totally forgot about suspension. Basicly, I just want an ugly ass L to have a US wrx (possibly sti engine when the idiot n00bz get their hands on them and crash them) drive train. Not really many bells and whistles, I don't care about the body yet, I just want something fairly cheap that is reliable and turbo, and awd So, if I was to go with a 2002 US wrx engine, tranny and drive train with 15k or so on the clock. KYB/agx toys, 99RS rims and a aluminum or CF hood, what do u guys think (with labor) I don't want to call places asking them yet, becase this is just something that i want to do for my next car, I just don't know when i can do it. boo yam keith |

You could get a JDM motor for literally half what a USDM one would cost you. And you'd get a better block to boot(not the crappy EJ205).

Gas difference isn't as big is they make you think as they use different methods of determining octane.
Think about buying a JDM STi block and tranny, and drive trane bits, JDM, and busting a TECII or TECIII. Hell you can buy everything but the block and Call up TurboXS and have them help you with a 2.2 or 2.5 block. If you are doing that you might just buy aftermarket shafts, and do a modena, MRT, or chalak gear box, which might be equally available and you might get more bang for your buck. Hell you could even buy a used STi Ver5 or so (7kish) and find some shady cat to do a vin swap. I've also heard doing the conversion yourself is a monumental PITA. |

once again, u people are talking like I have money.
I'm lookin to get a car soon, but get the best bang for the buck (.com) I can't bust out 17k anywhere. I'm hoping to get a cheap ass pos impreza L and converting it little by little over time. First thing to do would be the engine and tranny, and it will probably be the only thing I do until I get out of skool (the year 2098), so I'm not realling looking for a kick ass car. naw I mean yo!? werd Keith |

just get all your betoches to startin paying up on time and you should be 4ll g00d in da h00d yo.com!!!
in reality though, $7g's to upwards to who knows where is a likely possibility and the only HUGE PITA other than the labor itself would be the wiring... |

It'll cost a lot more than you think. If you don't have $$$ to burn, don't go down this road. Or at least, just drop in a USDM WRX motor, and do an FP turbo upgrade, and call 300 hp good.

If I could do it again, I would go with a USDM '02 motor/ecu only, as its completely legal that way. I would do an FP turbo upgrade, exhaust, and Walboro or Supra fuel pump, and run 1 bar, so it still looks completely stock, but delivers close to 300 hp. I no longer believe the stock L and RS trannies are a problem. My stock L tranny went on a turbo'd car pushing well over WRX power levels, and held up fine for the past year, and is still going. Its all in how you shift. So, the WRX motor w/ecu will run you $2000. Turbo upgrade is $650, exhaust is ~$600-800, and fuel pump is $125. So that's a budget of ~$3600 for nearly 300 hp. Plus the suspension and brakes should be upgraded. And I wouldn't blame anyone for wanting to upgrade the crap stock seats. Even in this best case scenario, you're looking at minimum of 5 G's, plus labor will run 2-4 G's, depending. My advice is don't do a swap unless you have at least 50% more cash on hand than you think you'll need. Anyway, enough of my rambling, what do I know, I'm just a bitter Scooby driver who wrecked a wonderful EJ20 swap... |
