Scotty.

Read through the first 10pgs not doing all 273 right now on the mobile. Did you swap to heavyweight to increase change intervals or was the lightweight still to slick? Been running straight lightweight for the last ~35k w/o any complaints on a tranny w 140k.

The lightweight wears out....the heavyweight does not....at least at any rweasonable interval that i can discern
im going to be using ~50k mile trans lube change intervals(up from 20k) and it likely can go a lot longer under more casual use

no reason to use something that is gonna wear out if you can use something that wont....right???

i have found NOTHING that leads me to believe that the lightweight shockproof should be used AT ALL, if the heavyweight is available

i wont be using the lightweight again

I appreciate that the OP has been updated with new findings regarding the cocktail. Ive been running it for years, and its never done me wrong.

Also appreciate the typical nasioc banter found on the preceeding pages. Though it seems that the newer groups are getting worse and worse.

In my experience, on a trans from a 1995 Impreza with 235k miles, it was better than whatever black water it replaced. The trans went through severe driving conditions and none of the drivers complained.

Just my experience though. I dunno what kind of shape your trans is in.

I've read through most of the thread. Thanks Scotty for the mix. I've located redline heavyweight shockproof and syncromesh but I'm having problems finding the castrol 80w-90 gear oil close to me.

Does anyone know anywhere besides amazon (12pk 2week wait), oreilly's (nowhere near me), or pepboys (an hour away) where I can get this stuff? I found one bottle on ebay... but I need two..

Default Scotty's cocktail (confusion)

I am just about to change the oil in my trans and accessed the site to find the . quantities. I purchased all of the ingredients about a year ago and find that I have the Redline Lightweight shockproof. I was sure it was right at the time. Reading several forums in here I see that a lot of owners are using the lightweight. However the answer and instructions to the question very clearly state the use of the heavyweight oil. Help, which one is it?

Thanks,
Rick

Scotty changed it to hw because of breakdown/ intervals. However redlines website discourages hw in syncro applications...

Hey Scotty, is Grimmspeed referring to your cocktail here?
grimmspeed

edit: i think... that's the old version, with lightweight shockproof instead of heavyweight, is that correct?

I'd like to try the cocktail in my 5mt ('03, 70k miles).

Thanks in advance

You only have 70k miles on your 03? I have 106k on my 02 and I thought that was low.

Just changed to the cocktail @ 274,000 miles on a '04 wrx wagon. Dino 75w90 before. Solved the 4th gear grind that was getting annoying and the shifting in general is just better. Getting into reverse still takes some coaxing sometimes, but it too has become better, just not solved.

2qt 80w90 Castrol HypoyC(NOW labeled Axle Limited Slip 80W-90 by Castrol in North America) NO stupid PM's on this either

1qt Redline HEAVYWEIGHT SHOCKPROOF....NOT the LIGHTWEIGHT!!!

1qt Penzoil 'SYNCHROMESH' transmission fluid....the GM synchromesh fluid PN 12345349 is available at any GM dealer and can be used if the Penzoil product is not available....the Penzoil one IS better.
__________________________________________________ _________

1) FOR BEST RESULTS DRAIN THE TRANSMISSION FOR AT LEAST 30 MINUTES...REMOVE the trans dipstick and use a funnel(see below) with a long spout....

Pour the WHOLE BOTTLE of the HEAVYWEIGHT SHOCKPROOF(NOT THE LIGHTWEIGHT) into the trans....

2) Pour EXACTLY 1/2 of ONE of the bottles of CASTROL into the now empty shockproof bottle and shake it gently.....and pour THAT into the trans

3) Pour ALL REMAINING CASTROL PRODUCT into the trans.

4) Pour EXACTLY 1/3 of the 'synchromesh' into the trans and replace the dipstick

5) Drive car in a NORMAL AND RATIONAL AND REASONAL MANNER using ALL the gears INCLUDING REVERSE.....

6) Park car on LEVEL surface....wait at least 20 minutes and check trans fluid level.....top up with the synchromesh product.

THE 5MT TRANSMISSION DOES NOT LIKE TO BE AT ALL UNDER FILLED....A BIT OVER FILLED IS BETTER THAN ANY UNDERFILL AMOUNT.
OVERFILLING THE TRANSMISSION S L I G H T L Y IS NO BIG DEAL.....DO NOT WORRY ABOUT IT. NO stuid pm's or posts on this please

ALWAYS POUR S L O W L Y.....or ya may end up with it all over UNDER the car and NOT in the trans where ya want it
these funnels work great...and no need to take the IC off

POUR SLOWLY....think glacial, here.
