Default Reasons Not to pull the trigger on a 07-09 Spec B

Anyone have a good one? Bad experiences? not worth the extra cash over a GT?

I've found several within driving distance with 25-35k miles in the mid 20's....

Thanks,
Matt

i don't have any personal experience with them, but i remember reading about them when they were brand new, and lots of people back then were saying that the "upgrades" (which were almost all cosmetic if i recall correctly, though i think there were some suspension mods too) weren't really worth the extra cost over the standard GT if you were planning on modifying the car at all. used, and in the $20k range though, that's a different story.

you think there might be suspension mods? most cosmetic mods? im not sure you know what you are talking about.

the B in spec B stands for Bill Stein suspension

From what i could find the biggest differences are: 6sp manual, Bilstein Sport Suspension, inverted struts, 18" rims with performance tires, Torsen limited slip diff, and the rest being cosmetic or stereo........

When I drove one, I can verify the rims, 6sp, seats, SI drive, stereo....didn't really have the chance to drive it back to back with a legacy GT to compare anything else..

well like i said, i don't have any personal experience with them. i just remember reading an article in a magazine where a Spec B was being modded, and the magazine had a little blurb about the Spec B versus the GT. don't recall the article actually saying much, other than that the Spec B wasn't worth the price differential if you were planning on modding the car. if all you wanted was to keep the car stock, but have a capable performer, it apparently wasn't that bad of a deal.

but again, that was when the car was brand new. as a used car, with that much of a price drop, i'd be all over it.

The 6 speed transmission is the only reason to buy the spec b legacy. If you plan to mod it to make power then that is the transmission to have as the 5 speeds don't hold up to lots of power. Personally I would spend the extra money.

I have a 08 spec b just turned over 6k on it and love it to death. It is better than the legacy gt for small reason like the 6 speed tranny, aluminum a-arms and Bilstein suspension. Plus if you like luxury it has every option you could get on a leggy. Just did stage 2 and loving as well, waitn for more upgrades when i come back from Iraq.LoL

There's one guy on LGT.com who broke the 5sp with an FP Green if I remember right, but there's 3-4 others who have similar or larger turbos (including myself) and haven't broken the trans. At least not yet.

That said, I'm thinking real hard about upgrading to a 6MT for peace-of-mind.

If you're planning on coilovers, you'll be throwing out the "B" in spec B.
If you're planning on an ATP 3076 or Dom 3R, the 5MT is probably strong enough.
If you're planning on a 20G or smaller, the 5MT is definitely strong enough.
The torsen rear diff is probably a good idea if you drive competitively.

I bet you get a little better mileage with the spec B's 6MT on the freeway, the gearing is pretty long in 5th and 6th. If I do go 6MT, it'll be with the spec B's gearing.

The only thing holding me back is that I can get a new wrx for the same money......drove both and I like them both. Legacy was much nicer insided and out....but the wrx was faster and felt more nimble.....

If you plan to swap turbos, the LGT will certainly be no slower.
If you plan to do handling mods, it's hard to say which will be more nimble.
Much of the current-gen Impreza was derived from that generation of the Legacy.

Anyone have a rough idea of what it would cost to do a sti swap on the lgt?.......ball park figures......the turbo and neccessary parts.....no suspension or brakes....

Thanks
Matt

quick ebay search

3500 trans and diff and axles
4500 motor swap

brakes and seats are 1000 each but you dont need them. and you are looking at 10k after you factor in labor.

you are better off just getting a bigger turbo and ra gears

I had an 04 WRX from 2003-2010 and in March I purchased a 2008 Spec.B and I couldnt be happier. If you like the STI and want luxury its the best of both worlds. I ended up stumbling upon a stage 2 spec.B and picked it up for just under $26k and it has 32k miles on it when I bought it. I couldnt be happier as I am 31 years old and the STI was an option however the spec.B was more refined & less of a kids car (no offense STI owners). I love the 2 tone seats, bilstein struts and smooth ride whereas my 04 WRX was very rough ride and noisey. IMO the spec.B is totally worth the money if you find a nice one for a decent price.

Here are the differences between the LGT and spec.B. The spec.B has.....

Bilstein struts
6 speed STI transmission and R180 rear diff
2 tone seats and door cards
18" wheels & tires

It doesnt look like alot of differences and I am sure there are a few I am forgetting.

Here are a few pics of my spec.B I am sorry I dont have pics of the interior so it looks like a reg LGT from the pics below
