Default Turbos Return to IndyCar Series in 2011

Quote:
If there wasn't reason enough to celebrate the newly reunited Indy Racing League, here's another: turbochargers will be in use by the 2011 race season
Should plans continue unchanged, this would be the first use of turbocharged engines since the infamous IRL/CART split of 1994. Although CART (and its successor, Champ Car) continued to use turbos through its demise in 2007, the IRL switched in 1997 to normally aspirated V-8s.

Although the exact specifications are yet to be drawn, the new engines could be either four- or six-cylinder blocks with a single- or twin-turbocharger setup. Either way, the IRL is hoping to see power increase to approximately 750 hp.

Officials also hope the new engine specs will attract more manufacturers, moving the IRL away from an all-Honda series. Although Honda has expressed interest in the new regulations, Brian Barnhart, president of the IRL, claims another two or three companies are considering joining the field.

IRL sucked without that high-pitched wail.

Bring back the Menard V6's , or I wonder if anyone would dust off the famed 1994 Indy 500 winning Illmore/Mercedes pushrod V6's.

Those won due to a loophole that allowed pushrod motors to be bigger and run more open.

Personally, I miss the Buick Turbo V6s that ran Indy.

I'd like to see Indy go back to the cutting edge technology and competing configurations instead of the one-for-all setup. But I guess that's too much to ask.

I'm sure the teams will love this... There are so many more ways to cheat with turbocharged engines.

Buick V6 = Menard V6 .

I wanna know what the interest level is amongst manufacturers in terms of 4cyl & 6cyl camps. In theory a 4cyl will get better mileage and be lighter, but would need twin turbos to make the power they are aiming for. 6cyl can easily do the job, as seen with the Buick/Menard & Illmor/MBZ loophole motors, but it will essentially come down to $$$.

Anyone else like to see VW/Audi come and push for 4cyl motors, just for kicks? Would be nice to see GM get back into things with the Ecotec, since we've seen it make gobs of power in drag applications.
