well just got a call from my shop yesterday, you guys wont believe what it is...
The gasket on one of the TGV's blew out completely... don't ask me how a new gasket blew out... it just did, so $280 and I'll have my car back this afternoon. I probably could have fixed it myself but I am in my final semester of college... so not exactly as much free-time as I'd like... lol So to those of you who have tried everything else check your TGVs!!!

I had gasket below replaced, but thought gasket above rarely fails.

It's all good now.... cept my A/Fs at crusing are a little funny, prolly b/c we rescaled the MAF and cleaned it while it was having this problem... time to re-tune now... :-/ |

I was looking at the 04 wrx wagon for sale yesterday with 180k miles on it it had p0171 code as owner claimed it was due to fuel pump not pumping enough fuel which i think is bs. Car is mostly stock has stock turbo catback bov and it was rebuilt with manley pistons. He is running 16 psi and car felt pretty weak comparing to my friend's wrx. Guy doesnt seem to be too bright what he is doing my question is: isnt it not safe to drive a car like this ? If the afr is messed up ? He doesnt have afr gauge but thats what i think it is? Thanks.

that's an odd code to nail down
StreetKa
I would not be too interested in buying that car from what you say about it. I think you are rightfully hesitant: "mostly stock, rebuilt with Manely pistons". But that's just me. As for the p0171, it's an odd one to track down. I had my front O2 sensor replaced and that didn't fix it. I cleaned the MAF and that didn't fix it. I checked for bad vacuum hoses, and found none. So I spent $50.00 and bought a cheap OBDII reader and just started clearing the code. Odd thing is the code would stay off for weeks then pop up again. I'd clear it, and wait for the next one to light off. Then it got to where I'd have to reset it like once a week. But now it's been six months since I've seen it. Go figure. It never did effect the drive-ability of the car; no change in startup, idling, power or fuel economy. Stranger than fiction. darryl |

good call, StreetKa
Buy yourself some peace of mind (in a better Subie). Yes, no issues with my car because of that code. I always wanted to be sure I knew the CE light was not a (more) serious code. That's why I bought the reader. My old Bug-eye still runs like a young pup.
Good luck with whichever car you get. darryl |

P0171 is BACK again...... No drivability issue whatsoever and car feels powerful as before. No effect on fuel consumption or idling. |

hey txl146,
Mine drove the same ce light or no ce light; no dirvability issues at all. I still haven't seen it come back yet. No rhyme nor reason. It just comes and goes. I'd begun to accept that it must be the ECU mapping (which I believe it really is, but am not equipped to prove that). darryl |

One other possibility I can think of is crossover pipe gaskets, but car is not making any high pitch noise or sound that will point to that area.
All other exhaust manifold gaskets have been replaced. Exhaust manifold bottom gaskets have been replaced twice last year. Since idle is perfectly fine, I don't think there is any vacuum leak. |

have you ever had your car tuned? sorry if im jumping in without reading too much before, but my experience is... I bought my car from someone who had it previously tuned. It turns out the tune was actually too lean around 2500 rpm so now that i have been tuned by my tuner everything is working great. The other thing that added to that was i had a short ram turbo inlet which has the maf sensor right next to the filter, i dont believe my car was previously tuned for it so that was a lot of excess air that the maf didnt know what to do with. sorry for the rant but i hope this helps

i see that you have ordered the 02 sensor. i did that as well. if that doesn't get rid of it then i would still say it's the tune. It was inspection that got me too. Since the inspection place test is, "rev to 2500 and hold for at least 1 minute then let idle for 30 secs".. My check engine light came on during the test due to my tune. Once again, just informational, not sure if this is your scenario but i hope it helps

After a week, CEL is back again. First time I had CEL 3 months ago, I cleaned pressure sensor, which seems to have fixed it.
Got the CEL again last Sunday, so I deleted the CEL and cleaned MAF sensor. Today, I got the CEL again, so I re-tightened plugs and re-seated air intake. I really am running out of ideas as to what can possibly cause CEL as car idles perfectly find at 21 inHg at idle and drivability is just fine. |

Well just to add into this. When I had the CE code on my car it run very rich and gas consumption suffered. I have not had a code (knock on wood) since I replaced my turbo intlet hose.

Suggest go back to post #1 in this thread and start checking off those possible fixes.
Also, to be absolutely sure this is not effecting your daily drive is by logging. Going lean during boost = . |

Maybe I can get some help here. I bought my car about a month ago and shortly after driving off the dealer lot this code pop'd up and has not gone away. I went through the steps in post and started to check for all of them. I even through a scan tool on my car to troubleshoot the code and have come down to what I think is one of two problems either fuel pressure or maf.
My symptoms are strange. The car runs great and accelerates fine except between 3k and 4.5k rpm. The dies in power by about half and then surges like its trying to accelerate but it just cant something is holding it back and then when it passes 4.5k rpm it boosts fine. Mods that I know of is aps front mount and aps 65mm intake and aps dv and aftermarket turbo but dont know what kind yet. It is tuned when I bought the car. Any ideas would be great thanks. |

I just wanted to write in that so far the car is running good. I had poor acceleration between 3-4k and crappy gas mileage. I replaced the maf today and was worlds better.

Mine used to come up every 3-5 months, but now it comes on every 1-3 weeks.
I am also tired of trying to fix this problem. Think I tried pretty much everything you can think of. Has anyone fixed this problem by replacing any of exhaust manifold gaskets? |
