Default My turbo blew up.

Holy crap, I have NO LUCK when it comes to cars.
As you may recall my Version 8 engine melted piston #1 3 days after being ECUTEK tuned. I put it back together with Wiseco forged pistons and race bearings and a shimmed oil pump for higher oil pressure, drove it 2 days, 680 miles for break in, and yesterday on start up I found that it was burning spectacular amounts of oil. Looks like the turbo oil seals are blown. (This is a VF22 Turbo)
How could it not smoke at all for 2 days and then start burning oil all of a sudden? Can a shimmed pump (one shim) make enough oil pressure at 4000RPM MAX to blow oil seals?
Is there a way to rebuild VF22s? I can notice a fair amount of shaft play on it now, although the blades are intact and it already had a small amount of play when I got it, and that was never an issue before.

how much shaft play? mine moved forward and backward about 2 mm. that was plenty of room for it to burn oil.

No way to rebuild. Toss in Garbage if in fact its blown. Its probably not blown however.... Its probably just to much oil pressure. You can try a restrictor in the oil feed line. Most of the time when this happens the turbo is not damaged once the oil pressure is lowered.

The OP raises a good point.... Is it a good idea to be running shimmed stock pumps to bump up the oil pressure especially when running Garrett GT turbos which seem to be picky with regard to pressure?

Or are the Cosworth modded pumps (which does not bump up pressure but increases flow) the ones to go with?

I'd prefer extra oil volume, not pressure, because some turbos are sensitive to pressure increases. For this reason, I watch my oil temps and pressure during/after warmup before I get into the throttle very much.

I just got an autometer electronic oil pressure gauge and it is pegged at 100PSI on cold starts.

And? Thats not abnormal at all. I also want to get this straight...you shimmed an oil pump with no pressure gauge?

my Maddad Clarity oil pressure gauge is pegged at 100psi when the oil is cold also. Its completely normal. During driving its at around 90psi.
When warm, the idle drops to 30psi. This will also let you know when its safe to romp on the car (when idle psi drops to ~30) because the oil is now warm and thin enough to properly lubricate the internals.
