Winter tires - please help
I've searched and searched and I'm not satisfied on what I found. I need winter tires that are good in snow, rain, and dry pavement to get me through the winter. I wanted the Dunlop Wintersport M3's but they are waaay to expensive. Does anyone know of a WINTER tire that performs well in all conditions for cheap? Please help.

Try looking at Nokian WR tires I am on my second winter on them and am very satisfied with them, they give improved stability on cornering. Look at their web site for an opinion from tire dealers who have ridden on them.

nokians have always been known as a great winter tire. also try semperit. they are the "winter brand" of continental, which is a great euro tire. cheap, durable, and i've had great luck with'em.

I've seen a variety of prices for the nokians and they don't seem to be any cheaper than the Dunlop M3's. I really can't spend that much. Any other ideas?

Tirerack has a "special" price on the wintersport M2s. I read alot of good reviews(good enough for me) and got them for under $400 shipped.

How "cheap" do they have to be?
You can't have everything you know. And if you can't afford "expensive" snow tires, why not just drive more gingerly with a set of "cheap" all-season? |

I'd rather not buy them off the internet cause then I'd have to pay for shipping, and then I have to take them somewhere and pay for mounting and balancing. As far as how cheap they should be, I'd like to stay under $100 ea.

I think you're asking for too much. If you buy them online or new from a local store, one way or another you will pay for shipping.
Maybe you should search locally for some used ones because I really don't think you're gonna beat $385 shipped(what I just paid after much searching/reviewing). |

If these aren't cheap enough, maybe think about some inexpensive All Season tires. |

I've seen the Kelly Magna Grip tires, but don't have any experience with them. Their tread pattern looks ok, and they are siped, but I don't know what compound they use.
For driving on snow and ice, look for a tire with the 'snowflake on the mountain' symbol on the side. Even a cheap snowtire is better than most all-seasons, providing it's a true winter-use tire. (The Nokian WR's are good all-seasons, but pricey from your point of view). If you need to stay on the cheaper end of things, you won't find good snow/rain/dry performance all in one tire. I'd look for good snow performance, then assume rain will be ok. For dry 'performance', expect a bit of noise and mushy handling, and don't hope for much cornering grip, etc. Years ago, I used a cheap set of Power King snow tires, as well as Cooper (something) Masters, and for driving on the snow they were better than the all-seasons I had on before that. I've also used Michelin Arctic-Alpins, and been happy with them. They were better than the above, offering more grip and control on the slick stuff. Check for the winter symbol on the tire, and see if you can find a tire with a winter compound. If you're expecting to hit a lot of snow or ice, you're doing the smart thing by shopping for winter tires. Good luck, KR |

I've got some Hankook W300 snow tires right now and they are pretty nice in all conditions. They are a bit noisy in the dry, but they still grip pretty well. We just got 8 inches a couple of days ago and they have done well in snow and ice. They are well under $100 per tire, I paid less than $300 mounted and balanced at Discount Tire.
