Back in the Legacy fold...
Well not quite yet. My friend just picked up a Legacy Brighton wagon. It's a 95-97 and better be a stick (). If you can't tell I don't know much about it, I just saw it in front of his house. Anyway, he bought it as a commute car over the mountains, and would like to lightly mod it. So I'm looking for ideas on what he should do. Keep in mind this has to be a commuter, so it can't be real loud, very low (lots of snow), and needs good mileage. He also doesn't want to spend a bunch of money.
My suggestions were/are: Weapon *R intake, underdrive pulley, 18mm swaybar, short shifter, morettes, tint, rims Are there any problems with the Weapon *R in terms of reliability? JC Still rollin' in the RS 'til SOA gets me a turbo Leg

Any intake like the Wapon R will kill the car's low end torque. This is because the intake pipe replaces the Legacy's torqe reserves, the plastic boxes and tubes that make up the stock intake. I have heard many negative comments about that kind of a set up on the Legacy. I would suggest removing the snorkus (intake silencer in fender well) and using a shielded cone filter in place of the air filter box. Or for an even more cost efective mod, simply drop in a K&N type filter into the stock air box. I hope this helps.

I agree with Jacob. Get a K&N drop in. Then get the fender plug to keep hot air from the engine out of the fender. As for the "R" some people have had trouble out of them. Plus some intakes can mess with the MAF. Do a search and you can find some good info.

Weapon-R issues
Jake, HIHO,
I've got a Weapon-R on mine and get that annoying 'bogging' where the thing almost dies if you hit the gas too hard off the line. I gather its tied to those reserve issues you're talking about. I have a stock airbox with the bottom cut out, was thinking of putting that back in in place of the Weapon-R, maybe with a K&N. Never had any issues with that setup with the standard filter. What do you think? Any benefit to running that way vs. an unmodified stock box with a K&N? I love the looks of the Weapon-R but the bogging issue ticks me off |

when i asked people here about the K&N drop in filter they said they felt no performance gains?
i ordered a JC sports CAI from GTBGUY in hopes of a more powerful solution... but it's been 4 weeks now and i'm still waiting (fingers crossed for next week though) ben |

I had a K&N drop-in in my '93 Legacy and didn't feel any change in power. Just my experience though.

Since he'll be commuting over mountains, in lots of snow, I wouldn't muck with the stock intake system, other than replacing the panel filter with a high-flow K&N, or Amsoil, filter. The fender well could easily get sealed with ice, and you'll want the vents from the engine bay open. Any CAI, or removing the stock snorkle, is going to increase your chance of ingesting water. The stock intake is designed for bad weather, which is what your friend will primarily be driving in. He'll also want to preserve his low-end torque, for hill climbing.
18MM bar -same thing - stock neutral is better than oversteer, if you're on ice. UD pulley - not really worth it, unless the rest of the engine is totally optimized, or turbo'd. Short-shifter/Morettes - really just a matter of personal taste. Tint - don't think I'd tint if I'm primarily driving in storms. Rims - don't think I'd put nice rims on a snow car. |

Fairly cheap mods
Well the Peaty version of the snorkusecktomy is the only really cheap mod (free) that may make a noticeable difference. IMHOP, it would be pretty hard to ingest water if the fender liner is properly reattached after the snorkus is removed. Use a K&N or Amsoil (lightly) oiled drop-in air filter for a little additional flow and water resistance. With a little luck he can pick up an Outback rear swaybar (18mm) pretty cheaply. remarcable may have one for sale since he just put on a Whiteline... Otherwise a short shifter feels nice and is more fun to shift, but doesn't really increase performance. An RS shifter is quite a bit shorter and feels sportier, and he might find one really cheap or for free (not a true short shifter though). Some KYB GR2s would tighten up the handling without losing ground clearance for snow. These mods would all make sense to me. Oh, a set of RS or WRX take-off wheels/tires would be a nice upgrade and relatively inexpensive.
Doug Edit: JC, your mods are really all pretty expensive for minimal gains |

Heh, I was just going to post that I had an 18mm bar I am thinking about selling.
Beat me to it! I like the amsoil filter better than K&N. It seems to keep more crap out of the intake, plus it has that slick stainless steel mesh on the engine side of the filter to make sure no foam or large debris can punch a hole in the filter. |

My K&N has the same mesh on it. Amsoil and K&N are both good choices. They filter better and flow better than a paper filter. Plus they last forever. As for the snorkus don't worry about water, unless you plan on fording some deep streams. I could tell a difference in MPG with my K&N more than power. Plus it sounded better.

How about the most basic - just end links to make the handling more linear, maybe an adjustable whiteline rear bar.
That keeps it nice and simple and won't make the car a beast on snow (set softest in winter and mid in summer?). Use the other money for some good studless snow tyres? Hope this helps. |

Ok, it's a stripper '97 5spd. He's getting HIDs, so he probably won't get Morettes. He will be getting rims for summer use and studded snows on the stockers for winter. I don't think an 18mm bar will make it handle poorly in the snow. Any experience to back this up? An adjustable bar is a possiblity, but remember he doesn't want to spend a lot on this car. I figured a pulley would give him some horsepower and better mileage w/o any bad side effects. Am I wrong? Does an RS (or any Impreza) shifter fit a Legacy? I thought they were different. I think that's all. Thanks guys.

Mods
Mods Ive made that I think have helped either hp or performance.
I like the Amsoil filter and the UR ud pulley. You seem to have an agreement on the filter, I perfer the foam Amsoil to the paper K&N. Some people have stated the pulley doesn't help. I could not disagree more. That is the one mod I made where I noticed an immediate difference in performance. I dont know about absolute horsepower increase but what I really noticed was much quicker acceleration. My friends drove and noticed as well. The revs come up faster(and drop faster when you clutch) which definitely improved acceleration. Not wanting to sound like an ad for UR but the definitely revs much more freely. Maybe these affects are diminished with an automatic, but I wouldnt hit a dog in the a** with an automatic anyway(j/k auto guys.) If hes got the manual the pulley is well worth the money. Another place for gains is obviously the exhaust. After extensive research, I am at a loss to reccommend a reasonably priced system for the legacy 2.2. Sorry Definitely upgrade wheels/tires for summer use. Takeoffs are good. I think there are a set of WRX takeoffs for sale in the classifieds right now. I also posted in another thread all the basic maintenance stuff I like to do when I get a new (used ) car. All the these things obviously need to be done as well. not sure about the HID either... are our headlight bulbs a combo hi/low beam? if so, you're going to lose one of them because most HID bulbs can't do both... hence the morettes.

A comment on the performance gain with filters.... just having read an article in GTI-Magazine (Finnish) about drop-in filters and some cone filters. They tested the most important stuff (air-flow, hp/torque gain..) and the end result was that the drop-in filter is probably good for one thing, it's cheaper than buying several stock filters due to the fact you can wash them... the gain in hp and torque was basically none (max +1%). Regarding cone filters, K&N and Twister (GreenFilters) were the top ones, with even as much as a 8-9% gain in hp !!!
The test was done on a Ford Zetec 130p engine, but anyway... * Miki * |

I would agree
I saw no real performance gain from the Amsoil drop in filter.
On another note, however, when I ported the air filter box(3.5" opening/engine bay side) in March I noticed an immediate increase in upper rpm performance. Much freer and quicker run to redline. And, alas, it would have been nice that my story ended there, however as July rolled out I was noticing bogging, lower mpg and generally poorer performance. My friends and I mulled it over and someone suggested the significantly higher ambient temps(regularly 90+F) were causing now very high temp air to be drawn into the intake. I replaced the ported box with a stock box and sure enough back to regular mediocre but consistent top end performance. Mpg returned to high twenties. So the moral of this story seems to be more cooler air equals better perforamnce-more hot air equals decreased performance. So I hope Ganz or Compass get their MAF intakes sorted out, if so I'm in. |

Another good change is to switch over to all syn. fluids except for the Manual Tranny fluid, keep that stock.\
Living up in MN we regularly get cold spells in the -20 to -30s. Synthetic motor oil does make a difference in these conditions. Also putting syn in the rear diff will help with mpg. and longevity of the gears. TIm |
