I run the PIAA Ion Crystals in my fog lamps, I really like them they put out a good clean yellow light. I think the bulbs are limited by the not superb fog lamp housing.

Lubes,

Yeah, I searched and read many threads. But I haven't been able to find any true polls or specific lumen and life-span ratings on any of the bulbs. Those are some of the things I wanted to achieve with this thread.

Thanks.

Will it work in the 08 STi Fog housing (reflector)? Do you have a store?

No offense... but I have done research. I have owned two different sets of selective yellow bulbs for my LGT and Xterra Offroad. They were both PIAA (excellent quality and color). That being said, I am trying to get a subjective poll of NASIOC and actual numbers on the bulbs above.

I looked into the GE Tungsram Gold, but, as far as, I can tell; they are not produced in 9006 or 9005, which will fit the 08 STI fog lights.

I will admit the 3000K HIDs sound promising, but I want to ensure they come with all of the required 9006 slotting for the bulb harness and mount.

I would not suggest HID in a fog light housing. the housing was designed for halogen, and any HID bulb will create hotspots. also, fog lamps are often used in poor conditions, and this higher output, might lead to more reflectance by fog or snow, and decrease what you can see.

The choice should be either slightly yellow or pure yellow coated 9005's. The brand of either does make a slight difference, but nothing compared to choosing on the intecity of the yellow. I vote for the Ion's, but its like choosing a motor oil(group III, Group IV, etc). we're almost splitting hairs in differences.

Thanks for the feedback, Talsnic. I was aware of the improper matching of halogen reflector housing with the HID bulb structure. I just wanted to give the vendor the benefit of the doubt(in case there is some new technology I am unware of). I think, once again, I am leaning toward the PIAAs.

Talsnic, I am also thinking about a selective yellow for my high beam/DRL 9005. What do you think?

None of the above.

If you have to go with a yellow bulb, go with the Tungsram, Narva, or Candlepower Selective Yellow.

However, you can get the same effect by painting the lens with Duplicolor Metalcast Yellow. It's what I did and it works great. The best thing is that you can then buy any damned white bulb you please and end up with yellow light.

Narva is on the list. Candlepower is the distributor of Narva in North America.

As far as, I can tell they do not produce it in the 9006 and 9005 variants.

selective yellow for the highbeams would be a good choice, as pure yellow is illegal to have in the highbeams. The only other better choice for the highbeams would be HIR.

my bro uses 9005 weathervision in both his low beams and highbeams.

here is weathervision in the lowbeams (9005 in a 9006 socket)

Then with the highbeams on (9005 in a 9005 socket)

Now for HIR...
http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7814
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=954736

Then how to trim for HIR into 9005 highbeams
http://shnu.us/HIR%20Trimming%20Stock.htm
If it does not go in and the trimming is good, you have to remove the O-ring and trim around the base of the bulb.

talsnic,

You ROCK! Those are excellent pictures. I am starting to think I will go with the Narva All-weather in the fogs and Philips Weathervision in the high beams. I found a place that still have the Weathervisions.

i seemed to neglect that PIAA does not offer a 9005(HB3) format of their ion-yellows. Seems that my weathervisions will be the best, other than going to a pure yellow bulb.

I got these narva all-weathers from suvlights.com. very fast, and paypal. BTW these pictures are about 5 months old, when i had my civic, which was traded in for the STI.

The narva is very interesting, rather a different output than weathervisions. Ive noticed that the H4 application has a purple hue when you see the car coming at you, and turns yellow. then the beam patturn shows a classic whiter portion infront of the car, and fades to yellow as you move to the outside. As weird as it sounds, these narva's were very good at penitrating some huge fog banks. i was able to see very well, when other cars were struggling to see anything.

Is pure yellow illegal to have in the high beam position in all states?

yes, pure yellow is illegal in the highbeams, but bulbs such as narva azzura or weathervision is legal.

now those PIAA HB bulbs are 55w, which will fit either 9005 or 9005, but since they are rated at 55w, this is 1000lumens. I would rather run a all-weather bulb with 60w (a true 9005 bulb), with 1700lumens. Lumens is what allows us to see... and color plays a smaller role.

i say this becose i would never put 9006(55w) into my fogs, when i can mod some 9005's(60w) and get 70% more light.
