Default Hyundai plans Formula One team for 2010

Hyundai plans Formula One team for 2010

http://sg.biz.yahoo.com/061022/3/44801.html

Quote:
FRANKFURT, Oct 22 (Reuters) - South Korea's top carmaker Hyundai Motor Co. is in talks to enter its own team for the country's first Formula One grand prix in 2010, Germany's Automobilwoche weekly said in its online edition on Sunday.

"Talks with Formula One chief Bernie Ecclestone are in progress," the magazine quoted a Hyundai manager as saying.

Automobilewoche also quoted Hyundai's Europe manager Gerry Dorizas as saying: "I know only that we will start a new motorsport engagement in the rally field in 2008."

Ecclestone said earlier this month he would help to bring up Korean Formula One drivers in the hope of having a Korean team take part in the race one day.

Hmm.. Seeing how their biggest overseas market is the US by a huge margin, I don't know if their involvement in F1 will be that beneficial. After all, no one really cares about F1 in the US, unfortunately.

agreed, but i definitely think that it will give them even more credibility out there for taking on the challenge. it shows growth in the company's vision and abilities imo

Cool. Someone for Super Aguri to beat up on. At least, at first.

Yeah but can you imagine the uproar if they tried to field a NASCAR team? F1 fans will only stroke their chins and say "innnnteresting!"

They cant do any worse than Toyota who has spent titanic loads on their F1 team and is only now just starting to show life. I hope they stick with it. They have many years of F1 experience to catch up on. But whats Hondas excuse.

While the US is their most successfull market, If they can prove themselves in F1 their global sales will most likely improve.

Oh yeah, this is exactly what hyundai needs. Maybe they can be "Super Hyundai". That way Sato and Yamamoto might actually have somebody to race against. Who's slowest?

Seems like WRC would give them better feedback for roadgoing vehicles than a rev to 20k carbon fibre bathtub vWHATEVERBERNIEWANTSTHISSEASON powered open wheeled backmarker.

I wish Hyundai, Skoda, Toyota, Audi, Peugeot, Mitsubishi and Renault would all come back to WRC. Hell...throw Honda in the mix too!!!

Why not?

They're a rapidly growing company, with a large (and growing) budget.

And a lot of F1 comes down to R&D and budget.

Toyota and Honda were the Hundai and Kia of way back when. Just part of the growth process.

While I would like to see Hyundai racing in WRC instead of F1, I welcome their commitment to fielding an F1 team. It is incredibly costly, but it definitely is one of the most popular motorsport outside of the US. I hope they get lots of native sponsorships, like Samsung and LG.

Yet, I can't help feeling that their effect would be better felt in the world of rallying. Like Mykrrr said, the more manufacturers, the better (for rally). In the meantime, Subaru, please have another season like 2003.

I could see them doing very well in F1. However, I'd like to see them as another team and not buy out an existing team. Seeing a team like Williams become a Korean team would just be.... strange.

Micheal had his day. And he was a great champion. He elevated all others around him. He was a well spoken champion, and I think his time has come to retire. Go out on top, not languishing in the back field. I am curious as to what Kimi can do in that red car. Equipment is half of F1, thats why I love it.

I am just thrilled to finally see an F1 car come with a 10 year 100000 mile warranty...
