Well most older JDM engine are more like what the Foz is like. Wring is the biggest hurtle. If you have the SOHC engine which I'm not sure if the 99s do they will bolt on to WRX heads. So what I usually do is get a WRX longblock, reuse the Stock intake manifold. Rotate the turbo and then get a stand alone. You can also just swap the block in your foz and I have mated a 2.0L onto 2.5L SOHC heads using 2.2L head gaskets but there is still tuning that needs to be addressed. This is why I have been seriously looking into Superchargers because the tuning require is much easier and cheaper as is all the wiring but all in all they both cost money, they both have their advantages and disadvantages, and any time you take on this type of project on an N/A car it will cost more then you expect it...
The easiest most full proof way to swap a SF forester is to buy ether an STI, WRX or JDM GC8 Turbo front clip. The SF Forester is basically a GC8 in every way but the exterior they even share the same dash so new WRX dash swaps and even JDM GC8 RHD swaps are pretty easy. |

Ya being an impreza forum most of my build threads that aren't impreza don't get viewed as much. Most that see my threads have subscribed to my profile and check up on me from time to time. Like a mini following... I see it more like people are monitoring my insane behavior making sure I don't completely loose my marbles.... Lol

Hey all. Sorry for the delay but I have been waiting for some crap to come back to me. I'll be picking up my new shimmed heads sometime next week so I'll be able to start putting the long block together. I am going to gasket match and polish the intake runners before I install them so that will be fun.. The rest of the parts going to powder are leaving in a couple weeks to get done so I'll finally be able to start doing some final re-assembly on her.
Stay tuned.. Johann |

Yeah me too I have been dying to get this thing finished. I ordered a couple more small bits to get it ready to put back together and I just finished up welding up some of the brakets and pieces I fabbed for the V-mount. I need to get them down south to get them powdercoated I am hoping to do that after the holidays. I need to find a spare 05 sti dash harness as a failsafe incase my stripped down harness has issues..
I should have the heads back in my hands to start assembling the motor mid next week if all goes well. Update will start picking up again after teh new year... Johann |

Hey after some consideration I have decided that it would be best for me to part the foz out. I will be keeping some of the parts and the chassis to undergo another project of equal to (IMO) way sicker result, so I'll be selling the full turbo system, suspension, as well as some of the custom exterior stuff, and a few of the engine bits. I am staying at the place I am living at now for a few extra months so I'l have time to make my alterations but I can't have a occational track day car I need something I can drive all the time all year around so...
I'll have the for sale thread posted up in a week or so. If your guys are after any parts pm me and I'll give you the list.. Don't cry people project time attack foz is still a go I am just changing the material its going to be driving on..... Johann |

Hello all!
So I guess its time to fire this bitch up again and get the ball rolling again. I know for some this is going to be a disappointment and to others maybe an evolution to rival the gods... Either way its happening and I have new determination to start this up again. So as some of you know project ForeSTAR was going swimmingly and then we hit a bit of a snag waiting for some parts. Weeks, then months past and then race season was about to start and Foz wasn't even close to being ready. That plus an up-coming move forced me to make some rash choices and downsize the stable. The ForeSTAR was put up for sale. After a few changes to my future moving plans I was able to keep my shop for an additional few months so I have time to do one last project before I move and fall of the "crazy Subaru guy" radar till I move to another place with a shop. Don't get me wrong, I'll still work on cars but nothing to the extent of the projects I am known for... So with that said I realized that though it maybe incredibly cool I do not have the room to have a car I can only drive 10-12 times a year and can only do one thing... GO STUPID FAST. I need something that I can use all year around when my DD (91 MR2 n/a) is ether too small or too rwd.. So I bought an 01 Forester as a second car, sold the Exploder to my mom's bf and was going to sell ForeSTAR. I have since changed my mind and decided to part out a few things on it to help change the direction of this build in a big way. Parts I have kept: Engine: STi Short Block (w/ High Comp Pistons, Forged rods yada yada) All my JIC Fittings Fuel Cell Agency Power Crank Pulley Unorthodox P/S Pulley Unorthodox Alternator Pulley Tomei Timing Belt Guide Cosworth Oil Pan Baffle PIA Special Burly Pickup Tube Accusump Drivetrain/ Suspension: STi RA Spec C 6-speed (Tranny, Diff Axles) Exedy Clutch ACT Flywheel Agency Power Short Shifter Kartboy Front + Rear Bushings STi 5x114.3 Bolt on Front Bearings Exterior: JDM Grill JDM Corner Lights Fenders ForeSTAR Stitch Welded Shell Interior: Prosport EVO Gauges Racing 5 Pane Mirror I am keeping the shell of the ForeSTAR and using it to do all the fabrication for the new project. I can assemble my new motor and install it with the tranny and make it a full roller painted and ready to go. Once I am there I will take the 01 Foz I bought and use the: Full Harness Full Interior Hood Doors Hatch And some misc crap to finish the new project. The rest I'll sell to recoup moneies. So, parts are ordered so there is no going back, by Thursday I will have all the parts ordered or in my hands and I will be putting in a lot of time to get this done as fast as I can so there will be lots of up-dates!! Not going to go into much detail about the new project but in the next coming weeks you will start to get the jist. Project ForeSTAR was a killer project, a one of a kind race Foz unlike anything out there. The new project is along the same line, a one of a kind race Foz (I mean really one of a kind). We are just changing the Media for which it's driving on***8230;. Here is the new parts list: Engine: 2008 Impreza SOHC Heads Gates Racing Belt (SOHC) ARP Headstuds (SOHC) 10mm Spark Plug Wires WRX Top mount TGVs (w/ Delete) WRX Stock Modified Injectors (800cc) Perrin Fuel Rails (V1 w/ new pushlok fittings) 2004 Roush Mustang Eaton MP90 Supercharger Universal 31"x16"x3.5" Radiator X3 10" Electric Fans OBX SS Header (N/A) OBX 2.5 Exhaust Universal 3" Snorkel Snout 150amp High Power Alternator X2 Optima Batteries Drivetrain/ Suspension/ Wheel & Tires: Stock STi Driveshaft X8 1" Uniball Bearing Joints X8 ¾" Hyme Joints X4 ½" Hyme Joints FOA 10" Travel Dual Rate 2.5" w/ Remote Rez Coilover FOA 16" Travel Dual Rate 2.5" w/ Remote Rez Coilover FOA 4" Travel 2.5" Hydraulic Bumpstops Custom Re-drilled Forester Rotors (5x114.3) Hydraulic Handbrake Level (Dual Pistons) Black Rock 15x10 -38 Wheels Goodyear Wrangler Duratrak 33x12.50x15 tires Exterior: OE Headlights w/ HIDS X10 4.5" 27w LED Fog Lights 2004 Forester Taillights Couple Universal LED Taillights That's all you get till I start posting up-dates. I should be starting this project this weekend so I'll have a nice initial up-pipe starting Monday. Also I posted ForeSTAR in the Top Scoob competition. Since she is going to get the major conversion the only other Top Scoob it will be eligible will be Forester only and I am determined to be the first to Win 2 Top Scoobs so Vote for your favorite ForeSTAR!! Okay so at least to start this isn't much of an update. I have 3 cars in my shop because I am no longer allowed to have them stored outside so I am getting one of them finished this weekend and maybe even the other if all the planets align so the shop will just be Foz time by next week***8230;
Here she is all stripped out of all her go fast road course goodies***8230; And yes thats supercharger is part of this project... In a side room I have consolidated all of the parts I am going to re-use from the racecar project and a few new ones***8230; Got me the parts for all the joints for fabricating the suspension components***8230; In the back are ¾" Hyme joints with non tapered spacers for the upper and lower control arms. Next are 1" Uniball joints with non tapered spacers for the rear trailing arms. Going to use a 1"x5" bolt for these suckers they are major overkill but why not.. Next are 1" Uniball joints with ¾ tapered high misalignment spacers. These will be going in the knuckles. In front of them are 5/8" hyme joints with ½" tapered high misalignment spacers for the steering tie rods. I will be pulling the stock inner rod and replacing it with a bracket that will bolt onto the end of the rack so I can use a solid 3-piece link. And finally at the front are some little baby ½" Hyme joints with 3/8" tapered high misalignment joints to be used as the end links for a rear sway bar if I need to install one.. Next are the po-go sticks***8230; I'm pretty proud of these. FOA 2.5" Dual Rate Coilovers w/ remote reservoir, heat treated viton seals 10" of travel for the fronts 16" of travel for the rears.. The fronts are 28.5" extended and 18.5" compressed. Rears are 40.5" extended and 24.5" compressed. I won't be ordering the springs till they are installed and I can get all the measurements down to get the correct rates. So before I can really do anything I took a bunch of measurements before the Foz got boxed in and got all the dimensions of my new suspension parts. I will be doing a 7" extension of the front knuckle (sleaving/ pining the CV axle) so I can get a full range motion of travel of about 21" in the front and rear. I am building the parts in CAD so I can have the pieces cut from a plasma router so I don't have to go through a bunch of time and cut off wheels doing it myself and I can verify all my measurements for the cycle of the suspension with no issues down the road. This is what I finished last night***8230; I got the knuckle and the upper and lower control arm pretty much finished. I got to make a few minor changes but ones the rest of the components are done I can lay all the components out on a flat surface and just hand the file to the metal shop to cut them out. Here is the last part of my efforts last night.. This shows the cycle of the suspension to verify that it will work. It will give me the location to mount the top of my Coilover (which will probably be poking out of the hood***8230;). To save weight and the need for a longer Coilover I am mounting it to the upper arm. I have seen it done many times before and this should work nicely. It also keeps the Coilover high in the wheel well so it won't get battered by rocks and mud and crap so hopefully it will last longer between rebuilds. Tonight I should have these arms finished and have the rear trailing arms done as well. The sooner I can finish everything the sooner I can get them cut and assemble them. This weekend I should be able to actually start on some of the work for the fox trimming the front chassis for the new parts and extending the crossmembers so I can get the full motion of the axles w/o hitting or needing to notch the frame rail. It will also give me a good 4" lift so I can fit the 33x12.5x15 I'm putting on here. That's all for now.. Johann |

Hey all.
So its CAD work day part 2. Got the front arms and knuckles finished. I had to make some minor changes after measuring a couple things I forgot to the first time around. Then it was time to start on the rear. The rear suspension system is commonly used on Baja buggies because they have a rear mounted engine w/ CV axles and obviously IRS. I adopted the same system to work on the Foz because it also has CV axles and IRS. These trailing arms are super simple and super burly over the stock 6 arm system. This arm will mount about 8" in front of the trailing arm stock mounting point and is 52" long. Nice long throw to work with my big ass po-go sticks. There will have to be a custom super beam welded to the chassis to mount them but it's also nice because now I can concentrate the bulk of the strength in the chassis around the cab. The rear rails and Crossmember will now only have to support to the weight of the diff and a few other things, and not hold up the weight of the rig and all the torture I am going to put it through. Here is the pic of its throw. You can see I have some room left in the shock so it's working well within its range of motion. This is also with the 21" of travel that the extended CV axle will allow before it binds. It's about a 2:3 ratio on the shock in the rear, whereas it's more of a 1:2 ratio on the front. Now***8230; The arms were chosen for 2 reasons. One is the reasons is stated but as you can probably tell 52" is pretty long. About 32" longer then the stock trailing arm. That is because I am going to be moving the rear diff to the end of the rear frame rails about 24" back and the wheel will follow. I have always wanted a Subaru Baja***8230; I liked the versatility of having a full 4 door cab, and a bed in the back but I couldn't get over the fact they used a Legacy front end***8230; No other truck really has IRS and I think this would be the perfect time to try it out. I have the Foz shell and if it doesn't work out (it will) I can just scrap the truck part and use the 01 shell I am currently driving. With that said here is the concept of the side profile of my idea***8230; Pics are of the truck at estimated normal driving height and at full compressed to make sure my tires won't rub and there was enough ground clearance so it wouldn't be scraping because the tires could go higher then the body. As some of you may have noticed it has similar chunky fenders like my exploder. Sticking with them because I can make them easily and use nice thick steel. I also think it will look sick. I'll be relocating and welding the hatch just behind the rear seats. This will give me about 12" between the bottom of the seats and back wall to mount my batteries and a 10" flat sub. The seats will also still be able to fold down. In the back is a 5 foot bed that will be comprised of a square tub frame and aluminum sheet metal with that grip tape stuff over the top. There will need to be an exo cage that runs from the bolstered rocker panels up over the top to mount the upper shock mounts and allow for mounting my rack and light bar. Also there will be a small roof spoiler that will also serve as a mounting point for my Aux lights and third brake like. I'll prolly put a set of turn signals up there too. Side ducts are not just for looks they will serve as cooling for the radiator and ac condenser that will be mounted below the rear glass at the front of the bed. This will allow me to run a super steep angle on my front bumpers skid plate and with no Rad up front give me a lot more room to make a nice strong front bumper support. It will be enclosed in a mesh cage to keep it safe from crap I throw in the bed. There will be 2 fill points at the radiator itself and a custom one on the coolant crossover pipe bolted to the short block. I found out that you can reveres them and they will still bolt on so I'll run hard lines tucked in the tranny tunnel to the Rad in the back.. The ac lines I will be taking the stock ones and extending them at the flex hose points to get them to connect to the condenser. Full size 33" spare in the back with a swing gate. It will take up a bit of my bed but I am going to make the swing gate line up with the floor so if I need more room I can pull the tire off and get an extra 33" of length. Taillights are some cool looking LED taillights off a Ford Raptor because the stock forester lights suck and aren't a good shape for a squared off truck bed. Light bar will have 6 27w LED fog lights w/ a spot beam pattern ad there will be an addition al 4 in front of the grill. I also have a set of 2.5" round headlights I'll be putting under the headlights with HID in both them and the headlights for good lighting when the fogs are off. Color will be 2012 Shelby GT500 blue w/ semi gloss black hood, roof, and side graphic w/ gloss black highlights. I think the color will look sick and the addition of the black will break it up some. This will also allow me to make a custom gas tank that can run from under seats to the diff 2 feet farther back and with the engine, tranny and diff crossmembers dropping 4" the tank will have a flat bottom. Should fit about 45 gals of fuel so nice long distance endurance runner. Well that about does it for my update***8230; I'll have the CAD work finished up and all the pieces laid out for the plasma table this weekend to hand of early next week. I am hoping I can get the modifications done to the crossmembers and maybe even have the chassis of the Foz cut and prepped for the front suspension and the truck conversion. I have 2 other cars that need to get done before that to make room so we'll see how far I get. I'll have pics Monday of my progress and of all the bits I haven't take pics of. Johann |

So I realized today that a should be thankful that I know how to use CAD so well. I had to break all the suspension pieces apart and lay them out so the plasma table can cut them all out... I am pretty glad because if I had to do this by hand I think I would have given up pretty quick. This file is going to save me at least 100 cut off wheels and about 70 hours of work....
Didn't really realize how many pieces it was going to take to make this crap and cuting it out of 12ga steel will be a breeze. Johann |
