Default Is pinging with AC on normal?

With my windows down and my AC on (my favorite way to drive!) I've noticed that my car pings in first gear after say, sitting at a light... IS THIS NORMAL? I'm going in to the shop tomorrow for the oil change... and might have them check that out as well...

Thanks!

Lisa

is it pinging or knocking?

Does it only do it at idle, or does it do it when you rev the engine as well?

Might be the A/C compressor going out.

It's not knocking, it's a definite PING. The idle dips down lower when the AC is on than when it's off. So when I give it gas to set off in first, the period of time where the idle speed is coming back to normal from my giving it gas, has a distinct, rattling metal marbles - ping.

Thanks!

try some fuel system cleaner......also may want to try 89 octane fuel if you're using 87.

If the octane and/or fuel system cleaner helps, I'd suggest resetting the ECU, because it probably recorded knock events and retarded timing slightly.

Lisa,

My Forester does this too, but only occasionally and only off the line after coming to a complete stop. It's a strange anomaly that I've just not spent any time with. You describe the condition to a tee. Do you get it with cold, semi-warm, warm engine condtions or all of the time? Can you replicate it at will? If so, I'd make a note of it with the dealer on your next visit and see what the cause/solution is. Then you can pass along your increased knowledge to your Legacy brethren and sistren. The Forester typically does it when it's semi-warm but has been known to do it when it's hot after a long gallop followed by a long delay traffic light. Stop signs, unless queued up bethind a whole bunch of other cars doesn't seem to bother it.

Me thinks it's something to do with the Throttle Position Sensor, the throttle body and the Idle Air Control Solenoid lashup either being ignored or overridden by the ECU.

Not much help but I'm sure others on here have seen it and know what's causing it.

Br, Dale

Legacy 777, you think I should use higher octane fuel? It's so funny, this is the first car I've had since my old chevy, that takes Regular... and I've just been putting it in like the dealer told me to. I will definitely try the higher octane gas after I get it back from the dealer, if they didn't fix it.

What octane to most of you people run in your cars????

Dale, I think it's a major handicap of mine, my anal ability to notice the slightest abnormality in an automobile. Actually, my X-husband was a German car mechanic... and he hated this about me. (he never should have taught me a thing about cars!) YOu know what they say about the Shoemaker's son? It's the exact same thing with the Mechanic's wife.

At any rate, I will ask them tomorrow. Trying a new dealership, only because they are closer, and am a bit nervous, but... I really don't like dealerships, AT ALL, but just don't want to do anything to void my warrantee...

DOES ANYBODY HAVE A CAR WITH NOOOO PROBLEMS??? I've recently owned, well, I don't have to go into the list again... but too many cars ranging from $40,000 to $18,000, and do you know, NOT ONE OF THEM was PERFECT???? I've come to the conclusion that it is just me. Some people just live with slight imperfections. I wish I could. Maybe I just should!

Thanks again, everyone, for your support and input.

Peace.

Oh and Dale...

It definitely does it when warm... semi-warm? Not sure, but only after I've been driving it for a while. I could replicate it if I was ALONE, but definitely NOT if a mechanic was in the car. You know about this phenomenom don't you? Perfect behavior around mechanics????

Have you checked your timing? I switched to a higher octane during hot weather and AC, it stopped the pinging on my truck.

I have a similar problem, when I have the AC and I hit the button to switch the distribution to upperbody only my somewhere in my dash there is a clicking sound, it's only when the car is running and only when the "upper body" button is hit. Strange I'm afraid of doing to much hands on research beucase of how much i may have to removedoes anyone have a clue to what that could be?

Run higher octane gas...if it's hot enough to need the A/C, your underhood temp's probably pretty high. The added load of the A/C just exacerbates the situation.

I've played around with octane ratings and such with my car. From what I've found my car runs the best on 89 octane. It actually runs worse on premium 91-94 octane. The computer's just not tuned for it.

I think with 89 it's close to the 87 which the computer is tuned for, but gives added protection against pinging.

Just FYI....

They couldn't duplicate the pinging . . . so I will just put higher octane gas in it and see how it is...

We've made the switch to Synthetic oil though!

Hope everyone has power....
