At the Track AKIC: Driving academy.

Figured this would be good for everyone here. Lots of new folks who may be trying autocross or ice racing this year. Even the Bartlett meet crowd out there drifting can start to work on these. Some great basic lessons here. Even for the veterans, returning to basics can help us to recall techniques more quickly and be able to discuss the techniques with the younger ones in a common language.

This is a nice series by Tommy Kendall at the AMG academy. It is a couple years old but good information. If you watch it in Youtube (which I recommend), in the column on the right, you can see where the next video in the series will come up. These techniques can be adapted to apply to winter driving as well.

Hope this helps you all. It will be good to add to this thread over time as we find more pertinent information.

Here is the first of the series. The basics;

Mike, we should actually setup a driving clinic that we can attend here in Alaska.

There was some fun that was had last night at Bartlette that would serve as a decent learning tool for a lot of drivers.

I'd definately like some older racers to give me some pointers. Sometimes I feel as if I might have bad habits that could use some ironing out. Especially in shift logic.

For quicker viewing.

Round 2, Braking. Threshold and Trail.Very good stuff in this one.

Round 3. Slaloms.

Round 4. Understeer and oversteer.

Round 5. Line technique.

Round 6. Electronic stability management or traction control. For those of you who have such technology.

Round 7. For all you folks who want to be like the drift king, Todd Vohr.

Round 8. Lead/Follow. For those who will be on the ice or up at Tanacross this coming year.

Round 9. Racecraft. Or putting it all together.

Final. Round 10. Hot laps.

Another thing you guys can do, and I know how this is going to sound, but trust me. It works.

Those with an Xbox or PS3, get a steering wheel. The Forza series is supposedly pretty good but I haven't played it much except at AKsubie's place during a party. I like the Gran Turismo series. Specifically GT5 and the Formula 1 series. I like doing the in car views and make it as realistic as possible. Manual shift. Damage on. Tire wear on. etc. I also like the artificial intelligence turned up to intermediate or hard levels. I like to simulate longer distance races to build my focus and consistency as well.

I really like the GT5 series because they have a licensing area as you move from basic to more advanced driving techniques. What this does is basically get you thinking about these sorts of moves and techniques more than anything else. Get them solidified in your mind, make the information become an integral part of you that you "know" inside and out, backwards and forwards.

Even still, as good as the simulation is, it is nowhere close to the real thing. The real world has much higher consequences for getting it wrong too. In the end, it is just a training tool.

Have fun with this.

I'm always willing to work with people, provided we aren't flaunting illegal activities. I WILL NEVER STREET RACE!!! Do I go over the speed limit out in public sometimes?…sure, it happens occasionally. But I stay within my limits at all times, whether on two wheels or four. I'm mindful of hidden driveways and try to limit my speed in areas that I can't see the entire way with line of sight like hilly terrain. I always try to leave some margin of error and an out in case of an emergency. I constantly monitor the available traction and surface conditions too.

I prefer to work with people at closed course events. I encourage people to walk the course with me and try to show them what I am looking at, how to 'see' the course and things like gear selections or shift points. I did the instructor thing on occasion at several of last year's events and hope to be able to continue that. I have never quite understood folks' reluctance to use the instructors at the autocross events. I have had a lot of recent success with 'winning' events and championships but I am still a relative newcomer to autocross. I really enjoy having Jake, Ryan or others in my car during my early runs to critique me. It is good having people ride along at times too but I always like to have a couple runs by my lonesome.

I hope more will take me up on the offer for Ice racing. The seat time there is an excellent value.

A couple more videos for you folks. I'm off till the 3rd and have some time to gather these. I think it will be of benefit.

AS you get better at this stuff and begin pushing me or even bettering me, it will make me improve.

Thanks, Mike! Loved the videos.

I've seen a lot of guys do the GT5 setup to keep their skills "in mind" all winter long. Good stuff.

^^Thanks Chano. I appreciate your contributions to the community as well. I look forward to your participation next season.

I propose those interested get some online racing going together in the off season. Me and Taylor (coldfireMX) have had some great sessions in GT 5. I am on the PS3 system. My handle is Nomadak. Send me a request and let's turn some laps. You'll be amazed at what you can pick up.

I've said this before, but many here are new, so I will say it again, for those of you doubting the benefit of this video stuff. Ben Spies is a 3 time AMA super bike champion. Yamaha hired him several years ago after his 3rd US championship. They wanted to go WORLD SUPERBIKE racing. Ben had never been to many of the tracks on the schedule. The way that usually goes is a rookie rider comes into the series and spends a year or two getting used to each track on the calendar before getting good results. Ben had a secret weapon. He used simulation video games to learn the tracks each week. He ended up setting POLE Position at several tracks on the schedule despite NEVER being at that track prior to the qualifying sessions. He won the championship in his ROOKIE year, something relatively unheard of, then moved on to the top level of motorcycle road racing, MOTOGP.

Still don't believe me. check out some of the testimonials here http://www.iracing.com/testimonials/

Still don't believe me. Jake (getagrip) has a very cool setup at his pad***8230;we all know what he can do with pretty much any car out there. Steve Thomas (license plate V8KLLR) here in town too, got me racing F1. It has been of great benefit keeping my reaction times and race craft moving forward.

Steve

Retrac Engineering's set up

Little Nomad. Give him about 5-6 more years. He'll be ripping it up.

Speaking of GT 5 we should get people up on Forza 4. I know it's probably not as realistic but still fun specially in simulation mode.

I really need to get back in to GT5. I only played it for a few months after it came out, and I know all of the updates have pretty much made it a completely different game since then

Those are nice chairs. I need to make something for my setup better than what I have.

I'm down for some Forza racing one of these days. It's that ever "if I have time" thing though. I've got Forza 4.. .(that's the one right before the horizon thing right? )

This series of seats would be a good choice http://www.playseat.com/gaming-seats

^^ I am building my own platform with with one of my old WRX seats.

Some more tips, from a legend of the sport. God Speed Colin!

A great piece of video from my era. It is worth the long credits introduction.
CLIMB DANCING! intoxicating stuff.

An excellent video laying some necessary ground work for the foundation of any driver.

The scandinavian flick. First in FWD.

And in a AWD car. Sorry this is in a foreign language (French, I think) but the captions provide excellent instruction.

Enjoy and study hard!

An awesome chair...but expensive. And that's without the nice racing wheel. I have a Logitech wheel if any one is interested. I never use it because I want one with a clutch and full size and rotation wheel.

This is what I am going to be putting my controllers on. Then attach it to a frame mount with my WRX seat.

Speaking of racing simulations, I got to drive this bad boy at the LeMay Auto Museum in Tacoma, WA.

It had a full motion platform that replicated g-forces in all directions, including acceleration and braking. The braking effect was accomplished by using springs mounted on the harness that, when the platform leaned forward under braking, would pull the harness tight, giving the illusion that your body was pushing forward. Neat stuff.

Another great article from MotoIQ.

I am now set up on XBOX (Forza and F1 2012) as well as GT5 on the PS3. If anyone is up for some winter video racing.

The last day of the autocross series is the first day of the next season.

Nice links! Knew how to do these already as its essential with motorcycles. But also with cars anyone who drives a big rig should know that.
