Turbo Diesel 2003 Baja
So ya, the title sure looks enticing...but, my friend Adrian and I are going to swap the new Subaru turbo-diesel boxer motor as soon as we can get a hold of one on US shores. This will likely evolve into a build thread down the road. Anywho were gonna swap it into his 03 5spd Baja and make it hella fast. We live in the mountains and there are tons of diesel trucks cruisin around so Adrian thought it would be cool to have a diesel in his Baja and show those trucks what's up. Fortunately for us, this can be a reality.
Anyway, any thoughts on this?

I have a 2003 NA 5speed. Mentally I have been toying with either the latest 6 cylinder (good horsepower/good torque/now uses regular unleaded) or the diesel once it becomes available. I am strongly leaning towards the diesel. 1) I used to work on diesel engines; 2) very strong torque; 3) better miles per gallon; 4) engine longevity; 5) it would be cool (not a strong argument for it, but its my argument, lol). I haven't spoken to any dealerships yet. Where do you foresee getting the engine from? Anyone been able to come up with a cost for this engine? Additionally, placing a dual range transfer case at the same time would be the icing on the cake! |

Hvae you ever watched Top Gear? Well they said that the desiel was a good engine but it was a little sluggesh. That would probably change with a decent size turbo onit.

I like the idea, but this sounds like it would be a very expensive and complicated swap.

The diesel is good though because it's badass, and it also can be made to be fast, and has good towing and fuel capabilites. We live in the mountains and often tow snowmobiles with our subies. (the baja can tow 3!) When the engine becomes available in the U.S. then i'll start hunting. I work for Subaru so fortunately, i'll get an inside look into that field |

The six speed is the reason I'm looking forward to the 2010 Legacy. I think the car is ugly as sin, but with the six speed offered in every model and standard in the 2.5GT, that will hopefully mean an abundance of them available for swaps once people start wrecking the cars. I just hope it's as durable as the STi unit, and I can't imagine they'll have the DCCD either.

So basically it is impossible for it to even come into a collision but should it somehow come into one, it is essentially invincible and cannot be harmed. Best thing ever pretty much. The 3.6 is kinda a luxury vehicle...not really the best if you want to race around town. For that you can get the 2.5t which is now ONLY available in 6 spd. (no more paddle shifters! ) oh well, shawiiiiing! |

The new 6 speed will have a split case like the current 5 speed and smaller internals. But I have not seen one in person yet, so I guess we will see. |

They're definately going to need a strong tranny to hold up to the added torque of the diesel. |

However, the new 6 speed for the legacy will be a split case design like the wrx 5 speed, and very possibly just as weak. |

Hopefully its not weak. I'm hoping Subaru has finally learned from their old glass trannies. The 09 WRX now has a beefed up tranny as well, so i'm sure they gave it a substantial tranny to cope with the torque increase. I read an article that talked about how they couldn't offer an automatic tranny because they didn't have one that coped with the increased torque, so they had to go with the 6 spd manual gearbox.

It would be interesting to see how the turbo diesel compares to the gas turbo. We love our turbo, especially in the mountains.

I'd imagine it wouldn't be all that fast, but would have a lot of low end grunt and would probably plant you in the seat. I wonder what these will be capable of pushing though with some intake, exhaust, and tuning!

^^ + 1 on the stacks through the bed, anything that gives it a more truck like appearance. Ive pondered that idea myself, after it's paid off.
