Default noobs question about engine noise

Just bought a 04 WRX with 32k miles, its my first Subaru so I have a question about engine noise. When I'm in my first 3 gears almost redlining I hear ticking sound from the engine, it sounds almost like like valves that need to be worked on, but it only happens at high rpm and in first 3 gears, is there something wrong or its just the way boxer engine sounds?
Thanks

Yea it sounds like knock but if you can hear it than its pretty bad which is doing major damage. What is done to the car? Are you running any type of EM, And if it is making that noise in high rpm's don't do any WOT pulls. just drive it normal until you pinpoint exactly what it is and what is causing this to occur.

What octane gas are you using? You said you just bought the car, so just making sure you knew to use premium...

Man that doesn't sound good. I have an 04 and it has 48000 miles on it, I have only had it for about 7 months and right now its at the subaru dealer. I was hearing a ticking noise and thought it was valves at first. I only noticed it when I was only shifting at first, then it got worse and only took a little more than a day and my car died . Turns out it was a rod knocking or I spun a rod bearing or something, they actually still don't know. Good news is they are probably going to cover it under the powertrain warranty. Get it checked out ASAP!!

I know someone who has a WRX and they spun a rod bearing. It cost him over 2 grand to fix.

I know someone who had a Boxter and they blew it up on the track, they sold it for parts.

What's your point?

Lol, this thread is hilarious (not you OP)! Come on guys, he's just knocking and your already trying to sell him a shortblock?

It sounds like you are knocking, and knocking can eventually destroy your engine, however, you should definitely stop driving it in any situation you hear it (ie: wide open throttle). You should post in your regional section and ask for help tuning your car, hopefully someone will have a tactrix cable and make it easy for ya. Or you can ask for a tuner in your area, see what engine management he uses and get a tune. Either way, get it fixed asap.

^^^ Actually knocking and ticking are two different things. Knocking could be from a not so good tune. Definitly check it out. But if its ticking, as he stated, VERY possible it's a rob bearing. Unfortunity the 2.0 motors are prone to it. They just cant handle anymore then a stock setup. Mine is ticking right now at about 3k RPMs in every gear. Just had the oil pan out a couple of days ago and not only do I have #2 rob bearing gone but 3 and 4. Only 51k miles on it. A 2.5 block is on the way right now. Sad but true. If your not sure, pull the oil pan and check.

don't sweat it. after the 3rd gear its getting a temperature change to quiet down. valvetrain would be my best guess. The ej engines are noisy from day one. just get inderneath one while running. then get underneath a 3 main bearing boxer running. The EJ is meant to be toilet paper at an unfriendly cost in comparison....anyway.... enough of my 20-year-old-engine-ahead-of-everything-to-this-day syndrome
Prerequisites for my facts: I was underneath 1500+ vehicles (last count) at a quick lube years ago.. the newer ejs are more than 2.0 liters and dumb as ever.
This is after voting a 1980's GL the quietest underside I have ever heard and the coolest even after pulling in on summer days. Cooler than the legendary beetle I serviced frequently.
Use castrol oil of any kind, the subes make love to it.

Given the choices for four cylinders.. subarus modern pathetic attempt the past decade at a boxer is still better than an inline. Good luck with the noises. Great oil and takin it easy may buzz it all back in contently (Boxers are good for self healing little noises- even most of the ej motors).

Very true, good advice. And sorry about your situation...all I'm saying is that there are multiple possibilities and you shouldn't scare the guy outright...to me, it sounds like he's trying to describe det, though your theory is obviously feasible.

OP, is it a systemic tick? Meaning a somewhat linear sounding tick. Or does it sound like multiple ticks randomly, maybe even bunched or at nearly the same time? If you think its the latter, then its most likely det (kind of almost like marbles in a tin can). Describe it the best you can.

Ninja EDIT: Although I think bgd73 may be right. OP said he's never had a subaru before. It could be totally normal ej tick.

The car has no mods its bone stock, the ticking sounds just like a diesel engine tick and I can only hear it when reving high and then its gone, lets say I'm parked and I rev to 3k hold it and then rev it higher the ticking apears for just a split second and then its gone. I'm pretty sure I heard it in other cars I use to have 04 spec V and I think it had similar tick. I am not using premium gasoline though and I will definately take it to a subaru mechanic for maintenance.

I just read an article and it was mentioned that subaru wrx requires premium fuel due to high compression, I will definately start using premium I'm use to buying regular for my civic. hope that will solve the knocking.

Poor engine. Yes, you must use premium.
