2004 WRX hanging/high idle issue
I've searched regarding this problem of a hanging idle/high idle, but can't seem to find any more info besides the IACV. If I'm in heavy traffic letting the car idle, it will gradually start rising in RPM's all the way to 3 or 4k. Also happens while i'm doing a bunch of WOT pulls back to back.
I have already cleaned the TB, lubed the throttle cable connections, and cleaned/changed the IACV gasket. I'm pretty sure the gasket is seated correctly as there is no coolant being burned (no smoke out the exhaust). Any suggestions?? Thanks fellas.

you loosened the Cruise control?? My 04 does same thing when engine bay get real hot.. turbo heats up the cruise control box and something in there expands.. i have my cable honestly all the way loose and it'll still tighten a good amount.. your symptoms sound the same.. next time idle goes up like that pull over and check cruise cable.. its the one nearest too you if your leaning in over the passenger side.. check if the slack is tight
don't know if you've tried this.. but thought i'd mention it. Clur |

Yea I have adjusted both the throttle cable and the CC cable. I guess it does help, but always thought of it as a band-aid to the actual problem.

Definitely make sure that both cables have a little slack. Neither should be taut.

High idle!
I was at the beach yesterday and was sitting in traffic and my car was idling just over 4 thousand rpm! I hope that it is just the cc cable

I would definetly check both of those cables and you should be fine.

My 05 has been doing it and the CC cable is adjusted all the way out... Thinking of adjusting the throttle cable some, as it's not doing it as bad as it was before, but it's still annoying to sit in traffic with the idle hitting 1500-1700 RPMs. Not to mention it makes the car a bit difficult to drive in low-speed conditions.

Mine does this too...2005 WRX...idle gets to 1800-2K. Started doing this when the weather got hot...and more often than not when my A/C is on. I checked the coolant temp with my AP V2 and the highest it read was 215 degrees F.
If I drive on the highway around 70 mph for a few miles when I get to a stop the idle goes back down to normal, but in traffic it will eventually start to raise again. I just don't want to overheat. Possible thermostat stuck closed? How would the cruise control affect the idle if I'm not using the cruise at all, even on the highway? I have a 10 degree colder thermostat that I have been waiting to install...seems like a good time to do that just to be safe...the last thing I need is to overheat and ruin things more than they are now. Suggestions? |

Just read the TSB on the CC issue...seems that a little liquid wrench, wire brush and lithium grease seemed to help when loosening the CC cable. Hasn't happened since.
Guess its time for a nice turbo blanket and some heatwrap for my DP |

Apparently, there is no recall for the CC clip for a 2005 WRX...according to Minooka Subaru here where I live in PA. Service Pro was pretty adamant about it too....

This happened to my 2002 WRX last year the same day I picked up my car from a recall at the stealership. It was idling about 1500-1800rpm, brought it back to them and told them to fix it, but they had no idea what it was.
Luckily there was another WRX owner picking up his car at the same time we were looking at it out front of the stealership, he suggested the throttle cable so we adjusted it a bit, the idle came down and the cars been fine since. no more recalls. |

I've been having similar issues recently. RPM can hang anywhere to 3k when the car is warm/hot. Thought it was either one of the cables, MAF etc. Did so cleaning playing around and it didn't help. Anyway, noticed the throttle return spring wasn't backing all the way to the screw when I let off, and realized it's problem with the spring rusting and getting stuck so it's not fully returning to position. Sprayed some WD40 on it and worked it into the spring to break down some of that rust on it and seems ok so far. Going to do this for the next couple days to clean/loosen up the rust and scrub it off with a small wire brush.
Hopes this will help others here with the problem. I'll update if the problem returns. Last edited by eclone; 04-16-2012 at 09:36 PM. |

I have seen this on my friends 02 wrx. After he took off the heat shield to install a larger turbo he never put it back on as a result the heat cooked the Cruise Control unit so much it just tightens the cable to cause the high rpm. We actually took off the entire cruise cable the problem never happened again.

I had the same problem, went for the recall for the CC clip, but still happening. Decided to pull the CC cable off and so far so good.

I just experienced this again!
i know its not iacv, i cleaned that up really good + replaced gasket about 5k ago Hot as balls outside, sitting in a drive thru. Idle slowly started to climb. I turned off the car for a minute and fired it back up- issue came right back. Drove about 1 mile down the street and the idle fixed itself almost immediately at the first light. I dont care if i have to rip out the CC cable, I don't use cruise control anyhow. Can anyone confirm this is a sure fix? |

my car only does this in hot weather as well...never in the winter |

Loosen up the cable for your cruise control..... as the cruise control unit get's hotter (it's right next to the turbo) it will pull the cable causing the idle to climb in traffic.
