Really? I thought the EJ motors and the transmissions still came from Japan?

Just to confirm this, I walked across our local dealership and every single Outback and Legacy and Tribeca on the lot had their Engine and Transmission sourced from Japan, even though the final assembly was USA.
Without exception the following is what was stated on every single one of them: Final Assembly point: Lafayette, IN Country or Origin: Engine: Japan Transmission: Japan Now, certain vehicles (like the Tribeca for instance) had around 45% of the parts content from Japan, which essentially means that almost all of the major componentry (except of course things like body panels and other such things) is of Japanese origin, in the Tribeca. |

Not much to say there "BOY" ?
So, which, if any, are built entirely here in the US?? or are they all just big conglomerations of lots pieces from lots of diff. places? I think there's a plant here in Indiana, somewhere. Lafayette maybe? I wonder if they give tours to the public? It'd be nice to see where the new "love of my life" was built but from what I'm reading here, I'm guessing I'd have to buy a very expensive plane ticket instead of taking a nice drive to do so |

been through the plant... the engine assembly room was phenominal. very impressive... but I guess I was dreaming that there were EJ series engines being hand assembled before my very eyes (wonder what that 118,000 sq ft was being used for). now the EZ30s (this was a few yrs ago) were shipped in crates, as were all the transmissions.

Hmmmmm...... It DOES make you wonder what 118,000 sq ft would be used for ... there goes my wet dream of engines being hand crafted all Willy Wonka" style . Rats. How did you get a tour? Is it open to the public or were you part of a 'field trip' ? |

I was the sales manager @ Fort Wayne Subaru at the time. Dealership employees get usually one or two opportunities a year to tour the plant. I am sworn to secrecy on the oompa loompas though

That may be the case... it has been a while. I thought they were assembling blocks as well as heads though. Again, I've slept since then

Some serious money goes into the products presentation, though sadly the masses dictate the style/needs of the whole, rather than the enthusiasts... Just like Ford of Australia, they have falcons, but no mustangs... They get FPV Typhoons, we get Cobras... A big shame we can't import cars without endless red tape, so then people could do whatever they like, buying whatever tickles their fancy... As it looks right now, I'll have to go to Japan or Ireland to pick up my diesel boxer engine... |

Some news from my dealer...
Had my car in for the 30K service today. While speaking to my sales guy, I learned the following:
***8226; Subaru is indeed switching over to a 4-year product cycle, as the 2012 Impreza, WRX and WRX STI will be all new. I had heard this from another source a while back, but now hearing it from him pretty much confirms it, at least in my mind. ***8226; He's pretty certain the that the non-turbo 2012 Imprezas will have a 2.0 engine, and not the 2.5 DOHC unit found in the '11 Forester. This 2.0 engine, however, will be a derivative of this new Forester engine, meaning it will be an under-square design using a timing chain and DOHC. He's predicting EPA ratings in the mid-upper 30s. A 6-speed manual and CVT are expected. ***8226; The hybrid will probably arrive as a 2013 model. ***8226; The '11 Foresters won't arrive until November! In September this dealer will be getting their last shipment of '10 Foresters. Why so late? He thinks FHI/SOA were waiting for a more favorable yen/dollar relationship to occur. ***8226; This new Forester engine, as it stands, is really quite "detuned." The reason being, FHI/SOA didn't want this engine to upstage the existing 2.5 in the Legacy and Outback. So, when the Legacy and Outback get this engine in 2012, expect more power. He seems to think somewhere around 180 -190 hp. ***8226; The export market is keeping the Tribeca alive (no surprise there). He said they sell perhaps 5 times the amount of Tribecas in Russia as they do here. In fact he suspects that the US Tribeca sales make up maybe around 25% of worldwide Tribeca sales. ***8226; Speaking of sales: The STI makes up less than 1% of US Subaru annual sales, and the WRX maybe around 5% or less. Take that NASIOC! ***8226; The dealers now have a small "full-line" 2011 brochure. The Forester's grille now has 2 horizontal slats; current models have 3 slats. Also noticed that Touring (?) models have the gray 17" wheels from the '06 WRX, or at least it appears to be those wheels. ***8226; He hasn't heard anything about the new coupe, other than it's on schedule. RWD? AWD? Will it be sold in the USA? Not a word has been uttered by anyone at SOA to date. Bob Last edited by rsholland; 08-20-2010 at 07:16 PM. |

^^^ Good to know that there are well informed sales personnel. The sales people at my local Subaru dealership are simply stupid. They don't want to talk to you unless you are buying a car even if they are sitting idle and staring at the window. Ask them a question about upcoming products, they will pull up Subaru website to find out the information I can't believe that they don't have any curiosity to educate themselves

His feeling was that FHI is really going to try to make the next Impreza a "player" in the MPG game; as the current one is not. Bob |

I was really close to saying screw it and buying the 2011 WRX with 5 speed and he knew I wanted the car. So maybe he knows something about the future options? If it weren't true wouldn't he have wanted the sale from the 2011. |
