Question Tranny question

Hello, I just bought a MY01 RS with a 5Speed. Tonight, as I was coming home from work, I was racing someone, so I was in 4th doing 70. I then tried to shift into 5th, but, I guess I wasn't fast enough on the clutch and grinded. I don't know if it is only in my head, but it seems that now 5th doesn't go in very smoothly... Do you guys think I damaged something? Is 5th a strong gear?

Thanks for your help!
Danny

Hi, I have a MY99 RS and at about 27,000 miles for some reason my fifth gear started to grind no matter if the clutch was all the way in. The only way to get it to not grind is to double clutch it. I don't know if these problems are really related but just thought I would share. My guess is bad synchro. Anyone else have a suggestion?

Yeah, sounds like a bad synchro.

dandbest -- ye should lay off racinging yer RS until it's good-and-broken in!! hehe! Yeah, I know I was very VERY tempted to run mine up through the RPM range and gears when I first got my car. Others have run their cars hard from day one and haven't experienced any problems. I'd rather be safe than sorry.

If your car is still griding going into fifth, I'd take it back to the dealership and have them take a look at it while it's under warranty. The longer you wait, the worse it may get. The car shouldn't grind going into 5th.

LaterZ!

Well, it hasn't grinded 5th since, but it is not as smooth as the rest of the gears. I have a feeling that if I bring the car to the dealer now, they won't bother,so it will be a waste of time, but if it does get worse, the dealer will have my headache to deal with!

Thanks for the help!

The thing I notice is, when you don't have the clutch all the way to the floor, it will do that to you. My clutch is getting more and more sensitive to that as it ages. Its a MY00 w/ 20k on it.

I've grinded mine once or twice, but I haven't noticed anything different.... Course, I guess it depends how bad you grinded it.

You can't just slam it into gear, you have to wait until the revs fall and/or the synchros match the gear speeds up. Especially with a new car!

The 5th gear synchro seems a bit weak on these cars, so take it a little easy on the box. Of course, if it grinds all the time during normal and spirited driving, take it back to the dealer.
