This is pretty much complete trash and of no use. Pretty much the entire article is wrong/false, at least for Va.

Even without using a radar, I can look at a car and guess its speed, with my car sitting still or moving, in day or night. Thats to go along with a 100% grade on the written radar test, which is NOT multiple choice or t/f.

You would be amazed at how much radar works FOR the violator. There are certain angles that will give a false reading, etc. Its not just point and click like people think.

Just a tip~
Understood - but the point was not the accuracy of pacing, the point was that in order for an LEO to give a ticket using "pacing" and have that ticket be enforceable they need to be trained in the practice. Same for radar. It sounds like the test is actually challenging, which just proves the point that they can't make stuff up when it comes to measuring sound.

I did some more research (some internet, some phone calls) and found that at least on the 09, the SPT exhaust IS factory installed (not port, not dealer). And according to Subaru it is 50-state legal.

so technically, it is "probably" legal in Va. Doesn't mean that you won't have to waste a day in court to prove it

That would explain why it's a checkbox in the "build your own" thing on subaru.com, which is very confusing given the documentation on the spt.subaru.com site.

It still wouldn't be the standard factory exhaust tho, if you are looking at it from a legal perspective.

If an officer does not have radar on you, is he required to follow for atleast a half a mile?

Someone told me that once because I recieved a speeding ticket for going 10 over in a 55 and he came up from behind off an exit and pulled me over.

cops followed me for a mile before pulling me over for my exhaust..i think its the same thing with speeding, happened to me @ 66,3 cars were going at least 70+mph then the cops started pacing with them before he turned on his lights.

I just got pulled over last night for my exhaust. The cop was so stupid he said

" I don't even think you have all of your pipes under the car"

I told him

" I can get out the car and show you I have a cat"

then he tried to tell me that I modified my brake calipers.

I just almost started to laugh at this point. This is so sad that cops have to be like this!! Whats the harm in Exhaust on my car? Who am I hurting with my exhaust. Is my car louder then a stupid Harley? Is my car louder then a Cobra? NO!!! Why can't cops just go to 7/11 and just chill out like they always do?

Your up-date has the link to the wrong muffler. The photo in the link is of the STi performance muffler / USDM Genome. Subaru has always noted that muffler as "off road only" and has also noted that the dealer will not install that muffler for that reason. I have printed info from Subaru that states the SPT performance muffler is "50 state legal". Now that may or may not be correct but, Subaru thinks it is or they would not sell the SPT as a dealer installed option. If I recall correctly, at least one person in VA as beat a exhaust ticket in court with the info provided by Subaru for the SPT muffler.

Correct link - http://www.subaru.com/microsites/spt...earGroup=02-07

Note there is no "off road only" disclaimer.

To add to the OP and quote from DCBacon:

I have found in my experience, it pays to be polite. You may or may not get your ticket reduced, or get out of the ticket, but there is a higher probability of getting away with less pain if you are polite to the officer.

It's common sense.

SOOOO I got a ticket in Herndon for my tint. After driving since I was 16, now about to be 31 next month. What to I have, apparently 39% all the way around. I am driving the speed limit, actually less because of bumper to bumper traffic, coming home from work and I see a cop on his bike in the median. I have my coworker with me, not doing anything crazy and he stares at me as I drive by then turns his lights on. He comes over to me and screams, "do you know the legal limit for tint in VA!!!" I cant even answer cause I am really shocked I just got pulled over for tint, you can see right through my car. He then says "All show cars tend to have illegal tint and I think yours is illegal" I am like really.... cause I got it done at VA tint here in Virginia and oh by the way officer I dont have a show car! He then says " Well I mean people that like to show off their cars then to put illegal tint" I said, well I dont like to show off my car either, I just like to drive home from work in a car. He brings his little tool checks my windows and it reads 39%. Then gives me a ticket. I ask him, how is it illegal if I got it done here in VA. He said places tend to do illegal tint. I said then why arent you busting them, how am I suppose to know. He says I should of called an officer to check it. I say so anytime I buy something in VA I should not trust the store and I should call an officer? He said yeah, um well.... So I say I just bought new tires can you check if they are illegal. He says, well if you bought bald tires you would know... I said ok, I just bought new lights for my car can you check if they are illegal. He then said, is there anything else I can do? I said, no you have done plenty. thanks for protecting and serving and meeting your quota.

Well its 50% for the front windows. Yes I talked back to him once he gave me a ticket. I work with a lot of them and some, I repeat, some are truly pricks. Some are actually really really cool. For this guy to PROFILE me and tell me that my car is a show car and show cards tend to have illegal tint.... this guy is a prick. It is illegal to profile and this guy just wanted tickets not really concern about traffic. I hope he ****s his pants at work while on his bike and it freezes to his ass and then smells all day of poop.

Legal limits in Virginia are 50% on front 2 windows, 35% on the windows behind that. Factory Subaru glass is tinted at 2% (IIRC). Also, someone quoted the law in another thread and there's a 7% variance in order for you to receive a ticket (meter would need to read 43% front and 28% rear).

Lots of places will tint whatever you want, and typically make you sign something saying that you know its illegal.

I got pulled over for speeding last night coming back from Florida just south of Richmond by a VA state trooper. He ticketed me for doing 80 in 65 (I was in a hurry after all that time on the road, and I acknowledged I was doing that speed). He also started off with the 'I noticed you have a defective exhaust on your car (SPT catback). I calmly told him I got it from Subaru, he was surprised but believed me and gave me no ticket for that.
All in all, it sucks that I got a speeding ticket (my first), but I was speeding. AND, not all VA cops are dicks, this guy treated me with dignity and respect. Just thought I'd interject that one (_!_)

unless you have OEM tinted windows and then you're allowed to match them. This to me is what makes the law hypocritical. That and the fact that I have a waiver for tint for migraines - if I register the car with DMV that the tint is dark, I'm fine.

bottom line - this is NOT about keeping cops safe, it's about revenue. If it was about safety, it wouldn't be legal to have anything.

Well said sir.... if it was about "safety" then all vans and Suvs would not be allowed to have very dark tint in the back. It is just another way to make money. They are a business and they need to make their money. Once in a while some will actually sign up to make the world a better place. I have met a few in my days. That day though, I did not.
