mobil one is a pretty 'thin' oil, and slips past things pretty easily. what oil were you running before?

I have this same issue. My oil light came on and I'm only 2k into my current Mobil 1. No leaks on the floor. I'm switching back to dino next change.

dino refers to non-synthetic oils.

has it been using this much oil since you switched it to mobil 1? and have you replaced any seals or anything on the engine? any noticable leaks under the hood?

the 2 main places to look are on the front of the engine, and the valve covers.

Dino oil referes to oil that has been around since the land of the dinosours. Others say that the fermenting corpses of all those dinosours created the vast oil reserves that we have now. Take your pick.

My engine has been bored .02 over so I don't know if the rings that came with the pistons are holding up inside there. The only leaks I see on mine are from where the turbo oil return line is tapped into the valve cover. Not enough leakage to accumulate to anything tho.

I used M1 5W30 Extended Performance which proven to protect my engine for 15000 miles... Yeah Right!
I felt the car has rough idel about a week ago so I took the car in for 60K service at local speed shop (They do majorly subies)
Its about 5K after my last oil change and when they drain the oil out its "BLACK" and only about 2Qts only...
If I drove my car for 15000 miles, M1 need to buy me a new motor!

I switch to Motul 6100 Synergie 15W50, hope this will solve the problem...What an expensive oil

I have a WRX by the way...

Mine has been run almost exclusively on M1 since new, and it uses a little bit, but not enough to be worried about after 5000 miles.

I guess you have had some bad luck.... Even before the whole EXTENDED LIFE M1 came out, I was putting about 12K in a 7.8K RPM engine without any issues... I have been using M1 in the BAJA since 3K miles and I have no issues
so far. The Baja has 20K miles now... I change the oil at about 5K and I drive the the car hard....

Oil use has very little to do with the brand of oil from what I've seen. Using a different oil isn't going to magically make your rings seal better or that rear main seal stop leaking or whatever.

If you only check your oil once every 5000 miles, ImpressiveWRX, then you deserve to have the thing seize up on you.

My car burns/leaks 1-2qt of oil between oil changes, and it has for a long time. It still revs right to redline, does track days and auto-x events without complaint, and is about to roll 170,000 miles.

Yeah, I should have checked my oil constantly...
I have always used M1 synthetic oil and change every 3000 miles w/o any problem...

Don't get me wrong, I do take care of my car

By switching to M1 extended performance and advertised it last 15000 mile guaranteed, I assume check/change at 5000 is probably good enough...

I don't think there is a leak, however I was told using 5W30 in hot SoCal weather and upgraded turbo is not good...

By switching to a heavier weight, I hope this can reduce amount of burning oil

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot kind of analogy is that?... So you change it to extended life oil and you think that now you dont have to check the oil levels... Some people I just dont know about...

My 2.2 doesn't burn a drop of the M1 0w40 that i've been running in it. Just changed the filter after 3000 milesand didn't have to top it off or anything.

I'm losing a bit of oil now, but for the last 180k, I really didn't lose any.

the car has been on Castrol Syntech/Mobil 1 synthetic oils its whole life. usually 5W-30 or 10W-30.

Since I know my cars well and they dont burn oil, I check the level every once in a while, specially before long trips.... Now, my VW does burn about a QT every 3K miles or so I keep and eye on it (No leaks, just thats how ZEM Germans do it......).

I hope you mean the gasket has failed, not that your valve cover has come off. The gasket leak can make a big dent in your oil supply if you drive a lot of miles.

Cheer up, the gaskets shouldn't be too expensive or hard to replace. No head removal is necessary or anything so drastic.

yeah, this isn't HG failure, just a simple valve cover. Most people can do that themselves with the right tools and guidance/knowledge. Well, if that's the case, anyone can
