Default Thinking of getting a 1999 Legacy

The legacy has 147,000 miles, and the head gaskets and the clutch where just replaced. the body seems clean no rust, dents, and the interior is nice. I was wondering what a good proce would be and would it be worth it, with it have 147k miles?

...wow...ninja edit needed.

I thought it said 1990, not 1999.

Price: 4000 would be fair.

i think all the 2.5 engines have problems with head gaskets around 120k to 130k at least that is what ive heard from a subaru mechanic.

Wagons are awesome!!

IMO, they're just as nice looking as sedans, and their utility makes up for any shortcomings in appearance.

As for worth, yes, yes it would be. The HG won't go out on you again for a long time, especially if you're nice to it. It may never even go out. Subaru did update the headgaskets, so have no fear about it going @ 200k.

That's a lot of miles for a '99.

Even with the engine in good shape, you're probably due for struts, assorted cv axles, and whatever else.

lol, read the post.. new clutch installed. but I agree with the struts/springs misc stuff.. but hey you drop another grand on some gr-2s and get all your fluids changed.. check all the boots.. and for 5grand you have a pretty decent car. I would never buy an automatic with over 100k on it.. thats just asking for a rebuild...

My car has 206K, near 207K now. Never an issue with the 4EAT, despite the fact that it's an auto

$4K is a good price IMO

Most of the 4EAT problems in earlier models seem to have been fixed post MY97.

I Paid $2400 for my 97 OBW automatic with 176K on the clock. Came with new Head gaskets, timing belt etc.... I just had to replace a few wear and tear things but with 185K on it, it runs like a dream. If I can get another 25K out of it, I'll be happy

Regarding the new head gaskets, who did them ?

While the Subaru new & improved replacement gaskets made after 2004 do indeed seem to have cured the problems of failing head gaskets, some "independent" mechanics will use the "cheapest" available non-Subaru sourced parts that may or may not stand up in long term use.

Also in some cases the cylinder heads will sometimes warp very slightly.
It is very important to verify the heads are still okay when doing a head gasket.

Ask to see the receipt for the work done.

Heads up... the head gaskets are hard to find at a local parts store... NO ONE has them, Felpro and such companies have "zero" in their own warehouses...so cheapest, arent available as easy as you'd think... i had no choice but to get subaru gaskets.

um, they are only $35 each from subaru. that is pretty cheap I thought for the new 4-layer oem gaskets.
