Unhappy Wheel bearing replacement?

Hey guys,

Well I stopped by Dulles subaru to get a noise checked out. They said it was a rear wheel bearing. IT woudl take 4-5 hours to replacement, and thats $78/hour plus parts. Any advice? Is this something I could pay one of you a nominal fee to fix? I want to start learning how to fix stuff on my own, but need help... Thanks guys! Pizza and beer would be included of course...

IIRC, it's not a simple task, not like repacking rear wheel bearings on a FWD car. You need some larger tools (arbor press) and stuff. I don't know for sure though, as I've never done it, but I'll try to check my shop manuals (the manuals are for a 00, but it should be the same or close). Which side wheel was it in the rear?

You might not want to wait too long if it is indeed the bearing as it can seize completely and then ruin the hub as the outer race will spin with the shaft inside the hub (it's what's refered to as a "spun" bearing).

There are a number of posts about this, and they may have more info on what's required.

4-5 hours seems excessive to me. I've never heard of a bearing taking more than two hours. You may want to look elsewhere.
