Default KFC accepts the Lone Star Card...WTF!!

A sign big as day on their window displaying how they accept the Lone Star Card. Seriously, FTW...is this what my tax dollars are paying for?

Guru

Now if taco bell was accepting it, that would be a different story.

I believe you are correct.

Poor folk gotta eat; it's -supposed to be- a more efficient system than what was in place before... so to that end, it probably saves the taxpayers a bit of money (if it really is more efficient).

That's not to say the gub'ment won't mis-spend it on vast and sundry other crap, but anyway...

edit: looks like Jay found the info on it that I recall reading a while back

The "more liberal than me" answer: "They're poor, not dead" (from a volunteer helping me do a takeoff prior to fixing up a house; he didn't like my reaction to the satellite dish).

The "cynical like me" answer: Which do you think is a stronger lobby: the concerned taxpayers who want po folks to buy it all generic @ Food Town, or the fast food industry?

[tinny muffled garbled voice] Thank you, please drive through [/tinny muffled garbled voice]

Fast Food Lobby, FTW! I personally don't have a problem with it. I know I'd never be able to completely avoid some fast-food once in a while. Though it may not be the rock-bottom best-bang-for-buck, it's tasty and easy (sounds like a good name for a pr0n flick or strip-club!).

I tend to partake of fast-food currently only when I'm pressed for time or, oddly enough, money... Value-Menu's, FTW!

Dude, I don't think you can use your LoneStar card for that stuff. But I'll buy your card balance for $.50 on the dollah then you can go pay cash.

Restaurants Accepting Lone Star Card

DHS has received several inquiries regarding the use of the Lone Star Card at certain restaurants across the state. Observers of these transactions mistakenly assume that Lone Star cardholders are using food stamp benefits to purchase prepared food items from these businesses.

Generally, restaurants cannot process food stamp transactions because they are not FNS-certified and do not have an FNS number.*

However, nothing prohibits a restaurant or other business from accepting the Lone Star Card for a Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) purchase if it is equipped to handle such a transaction. Restaurants or other businesses that use a third-party processor that is certified on the Lone Star EBT system are able to process TANF transactions. Church's Chicken, for example, uses Concord as their third-party processor to process electronic transactions (credit and debit) and, therefore, can accept the Lone Star Card at their stores (TANF benefits only).

TANF is a cash assistance program, and recipients are free to use these funds at their discretion. One advantage of increased acceptance of the Lone Star Card is that direct TANF transactions are more secure. Because cardholders do not have to withdraw cash in order to make purchases at these businesses, they can more easily control and manage their TANF accounts.

This is a relatively new development, as fast-food and take-out restaurants have only recently begun accepting credit and debit cards.

Other restaurant franchises, including McDonalds and Burger King, have expressed interest in accepting the Lone Star Card for TANF transactions. To participate, a restaurant or business must use a third-party processor that is certified on the Lone Star EBT system. DHS and its retail management vendor, Affiliated Computer Systems, do not provide point-of-sale equipment for these restaurants.

DHS does not encourage or discourage any business to process TANF transactions if it is equipped to do so, and the restaurant or other business may advertise that it accepts the Lone Star Card for TANF transactions. However, this should not be construed as an endorsement by DHS for these businesses or their products.

*A limited number of restaurants have contracted with DHS to provide prepared meals to clients in group living arrangements or to homeless clients under the food stamp program, but these are relatively rare.
