Default Sti long block with 02 WRX ecu

I have a built 2.5 short block and was looking to put some STi cams in my WRX heads. I have the opputunity to buy a complete set of STi heads and was wondering if they can be used with an 02 wrx ecu. I know the avcs will not wire up but will I be able to get the 02 cam sensor to fit? Will the 02 cam gears work? Also if I did eventually get a JDM 02 ecu that supported the avcs will I be able to make that work?

Any other issues I might have? I know the Sti oil pan is different than the WRX but is this more related to the suspension ?

Yeah the sensor will fit, you have to drill and tap the sti heads up front to make this work. Just check http://elementtuning.com/technical/ej25_install.htm for addition info.

If you don't wire the AVCS, there won't be much a diff. WRX heads and USDM STI heads flow about the same. The two big diffs are AVCS and the cams. Since you have STI cams in your heads, don't bother unless you get a ECU to control AVCS.

Does the later version of UTEC support AVCS?

Neither Utec, AP, nor ECUTek will control AVCS. You'll need a Hydra or another form of standalone EM, or an ECU that supports AVCS, but beware of using a newer one than you car, as it will have other things programmed into it that can cause CELs.

ecutek, actually has the cam advance maps, ie..avcs..
so double check...for those motors that come from the factoy
with avcs...

ecutek uses factory rom files as base maps...

So you're telling me my 2002 WRX ECU will control AVCS on the EJ255 motor that I have swapped in there? I'll email my tuner because I don't believe that for a minute. Maybe if a 2002 WRX ECU was originally programmed for AVCS, but it's not.

Oh and BTW, it's you're
