Default q's about legacys

Hi Guys, I found a 95 legacy sedan around my area and have no idea to what to look for when buying these cars. Car has 145k, and from what the owner said it drips oil on the exhaust manifold(she thinks) and leaks a couple drops when parked. Anybody know if this is an expensive problem to fix? simple do it yourself? places to check for rust.(lots of snow here in the winter)?? I am new to subarus and sorry for all the questions. Thanks

Is it a GT or L? The GT's (EJ25 DOHC Engine) had a problem with the head gaskets. You're going to need to find out the maint. history on the vehicle to see if the problems were fixed. With oil leaking like it is, I'd also ask the owner to have the engine leakdown / compression tested, because it really sounds like she's about to go for good. I'd look around and find a Legacy in better shape, IMHO.

It's a 95, they're all EJ22Es.

Headgasket is not an issue for that car.

As for the leak, it could be a gasket problem from overfilling the car...the shop did this once to us, it blew the gasket, and leaked all over the headers (they fixed it at their cost of course, but we ran it for a little while like this) but it wasn't a danger to the operating condition, it was a minor leak that just needs a new seal. the car hasn't burned oil since that time, and that was 50k ago (at 178k right now).

I don't think it's going to go for good, but get that compression test done. If it comes up bad, look around some more.

As for rust, look over the rear wheel wells for bubbling, around the bottoms of the doors, and the rear tailgate under the "Legacy" logo. Those are the 4 places I have rust (one door, two fenders, one tailgate). All are fixable, none would be cheap though.

What transmission does it have?

Dont' be sorry for questions, that's what these forums are for

Well im not sure if its a gt or a L? any diff. between the two? the car is a 5-speed by the way. The seller is trying to sell her for $1500 and it seems like a good deal to me. would it be worth it to buy the car and fix the oil leak? any idea on how much it would cost? Thanks

There was no GT in 95 (refer to my last post)

Refer to Jonathan's post for the difference (GT gets 2.5L, headgasket problems are likely)

Would it be worth it? It really depends on what is causing the oil leak.

Bluebook Private Party sale on a 95 Legacy sedan (just plain sedan, not L, Ls, or Lsi) with the std options is worth only $1370 in Fair condition. $1500 seems like it might be a bit much if its the bottom level trim sedan. Go to http://www.kbb.com and check the value of that car with all the info.

Just from what you've said, I'd say $1000 and plan to spend another $1-2K getting it into pristine condition.

If it's the rear of the manifold, about where the 2 sides join, it could be the plate on the back of the engine. If it's plastic, it should be replaced with aluminum. Subaru had a stupid idea in going from aluminum to plastic, which they later reversed. But if that's it, the engine needs to some out to fix it. Unless you are doing the clutch, in which has you might be able to fix it that way(trans out).
