Default Remove 12v socket in 2004 STI

Hello, the title says I am in need of taking out the 12v socket in my 2004 STI. I'd like to replace it with a double usb unit. The trouble is I cannot find a way to get the socket barrel out without removing the entire center dash of the car, or completely mangling the barrel.

Any tips or tricks would be very helpful. Thank you.
