Impreza GC8 Long-term purchase - how does an Impreza stack up?

Hello everyone,

I have come across a potentially AMAZING opportunity to buy a 1997 Impreza L sedan at a really cheap price. If anyone already read my post in the dealer reviews section of this forum, they already know that I found a 1997 Impreza L sedan with 72,000 miles in supposedly good condition.

I'm trying to get into an all-wheel-drive car cheap, and I did not know if it was a wise idea to buy a 97 GC with 72k already on the car. What kind of experience do you guys out there have maintaining a 9-year old car like this GC chassis? Are there any problems I should know coming in to used car ownership?

My 2000RS has only just now crossed 115k. So half as old and twice as long: I'd say so long as it's oil has been changed, it's still got years of life yet. Even if it didn't get it's 60k service, it's not a huge deal: all filters, plugs and fluids incl. brakes tranny (5MT) and rear end. If cheap AWD is what you're after, then a clean used L is a good bet.


Proved it was taken care of, of course.

my gc has 146k miles, and gives me no problems.

well, except for the fact that some lady hit me the other day and possibly totalled it..

Ours has around 196,000 on it.
Only parts I've replaced that broke (not wear items like struts) have been leaky crank seal/oil pump, cam sensor, oil fill tube o-ring, and...uh....hmmm, I think that's all!
It's due for a second set of struts. It might use a quart of oil between changes, but usually doesn't. I have not put a clutch in it. I did, however, buy it used, so can't verify that it's original.
The driver's seat bottom foam is pretty tired, so I'm swapping out the seat.
Oh, and my wife broke the cupholder.
It's a fantastic car--fun to drive, unstoppable in the snow, and worry free. It's been so good we will replace it with a Legacy when the time comes. Not sure when that will be, since it doesn't seem to want to die anytime soon.
