82 BRAT with 12 in. lift

Default BIggggg ass tire/wheel headache

OK, I am gathering parts for my upcoming purchase of the STX (BRAT II). The truck is essentialy an Outback. Getting the needed lift was actually the easy part as was selecting the right tire. The one link in all this that is being problematic is the wheel itself.

The tires I am going to are: Mickey Thompson Baja Belted 29x11.5

The wheel I will need to mount these on is 15X8 with FAR less offset. The backspacing will have to be LESS than stock due to the cross section of the tire.

GIVEN that I am increasing the sidewall width from 8.9 to 11.7 to maintain the same inner clearance I will need rims with 2.8 inches less offset. That works out to 71.1mm, so 48-71.1=-23.1mm.

SO what I am needing is a 15x8 inch rim with about -23mm offset with a 5x100mm bolt pattern.

Is anyone familiar with any manufacturer that produces a rim in that range? I found pleanty that have a 5, 4.25 and 4.5 inch bolt pattern and while I can get an adapter to go from 5in to 4in. I would rather have the rim sized to that.

That puts about half of the tire inside the fender and about half out.

This is the sort of wheel style I am looking for.

Not exactly just an OB:

"2.5-liter SOHC 4-cylinder boxer engine with Eaton supercharger and Subaru B4 intercooler"

That bodes well for the next GT.

I hope it has the H6 with an auto dual range as an option.

Yes I know I am dreaming but the 4EAT is a good tranny and I can customize the TC and VB for rock work and the dynamics of bigger tires better than what can be done with the manual. The H6 has better low end, off boost tourqe.

The big dillema for me is going to be the choice between swapping in the H6 and auto which means I will loose the dual range which I REALLY need for rock crawling or keeping the dual range manual and EJ25. Of course if Subaru does not offer the dual range manual then my choice is already made.

As for buying parts before it comes out. So efffing what? Why not have the lift kit, suspension, wheels/tires, gears and other goodies in the shed ready to go? When she comes home I can spend a week of work and get it all done.

This is a hybrid vehicle. I don't think it will ever be a decent rock-crawler. It appears to have all of the departure angle problems that the OB has.

If you want a rock crawler, save yourself 20k, and go buy a 1st gen Toyota pickup, or 4runner.

Oh wow and I can be just like everyone else.

No thanks. I am aware of the difficulties and unique situation the STX presents and I choose to go ahead with it. Bring a Toyota or Chevy to the beach or rock pile and so what, one of a million. Now bring an STX and you are nothing like what has been seen there before.

Besides there is nothing like watching the solid axle neanderthals teeter on the diff as you inch by with all 4 in full contact.

Now in case you don't understand WHY I could not possibly choose anything else take a look below and see if you can find the pattern.
