The car made well over 300whp this Saturday. I brought it home, raced a few cam'd evo's and put a hurtin on them. Next day, first time ever getting on it in first without launching, hit 2nd and boom. Gone....

Would you do a full 6MT swap or the PPG straight cuts 1-2 and helical cut 3-4?

both transmission's are over 4 grand so I am not sure what to do. I am pretty sure Sti Ra gears will not hold it up.

Read the Transmission FAQ at the top of this forum. You also need to let us know what you use the car for. Daily Driver? Drag race? Autocross? How much of each % wise? 6MT makes a sucky drag car, while a PPG makes a great drag car.....your answers will make the difference between good advice or someone here recommending some crap. Or visit www.gearboxtech.com and ask Andrew!

depending on what you are doing with the car you might want to think about doing just ppg 1st and 2nd if the money is a problem

I am looking for something only for drag racing, even though the car is simply a show car.

PPG straight cut dogs are your best bet if your objective is to drag. Definitely read Unabombers fact. It can be quite helpful

IMO...

6-speed if you want DCCD (I like the DCCD a lot, but hate 6-speed ratios)

PPG 1-4 if you want the best gears money can get

RA's can hold that much power, but it depends on driving style. I wouldn't recommend them for somebody who's broken their stock tranny. In mid 2003, Subaru changed the gears to RA width, but we don't know if yours is that width unless you take it apart and you have something to reference to it.

I started a poll regarding all RA and STi 5mt gears, and it appears more people who are between 200-300whp are breaking their RA's than the people who are 300-400whp. Wierd, huh?

My theory is that most people who are between 200-300whp probably don't change gears unless they are already broken. The people who are 300-400whp usually are planning their build, so they buy the gears and have them installed even though their stock tranny is fine. I've talked to people with almost 400whp with a 2.5l hybrid setups who are on RA or STI non-RA gears with no problems. Then I talk to peopl with stage 2 2.0 setups who've broken stock and RA gears. This leads me to believe the 200-300whp ra users who broke their gears and broke a set of sti 5mt gears drive their gears hard. Being that the racing you did probably broke your gears, this leads me to believe RA's wouldn't be the best for your setup.

Here's a link to that thread

The safe bet is to get PPG or 6-speeds for strenth. PPG's are stronger than 6-speeds, but both could handle your power range with no problems. If you can afford the two, take the ratios and differential options by both into consideration. I would take the PPG's because I don't like the 6-speed ratios, but some people like the short gearing on 6-speeds. Also, like mentioned above, 6-speeds have the DCCD.

If you don't have money, have a Subaru tech or performance shop familiar with Subie tranny's tear apart your tranny and see what 03 factory gears you have. If they are the thinner ones, you can give RA's or sti-non RA's a shot.

If you just want an opinion of somebody who is planning a gear/tranny upgrade, I would get PPG's if the funds allowed for it. If you've got the dough, you will get the best gears/tranny money can buy for Subie's. My thing is if you like having a different diff for your 5mt, you can always add one with your PPG set. More money, but it would be sick. Just my opinion.
