Default Severe negative knock correction (w/ logs)

I installed the typical VF30 upgrade about a month or so ago and have been running some logs just to see if everything looked okay. One disturbing trend I noticed was that I seem to get a lot of negative KC during very light load/vacuum situations. I was wondering if anybody has a similar problem or has any idea what is going on and why I would be seeing -10 and -12 in the KC column. Once I do get into boost and a bigger load situations everything "appears" to be just fine. Also, could this 'false knock' be attributed to my IAM only being 11....this puzzles me as well. I did a few logs a couple weeks ago and my IAM was at 16 even though I still seemed to be getting the negative KC values. However, the weather around here the past week has been in the upper 80's with a decent amount of humidity....this maybe causing me problems too. Anyway, I am far from an expert so any help is greatly appreciated.

Not logging knock count, just correction? or does AP not log count?

I know I was getting slight knock with my UTEC because it would creep into boost lightly under part throttle, but that does not seem to be your case. Very wierd indeed.

is this a 3rd gear pull? Or did you just hit the button and cruise around. Your rpm's are all over the place. Might be easier if you did a linear pull in 3rd...

I just kinda started logging and cruised around. I did a few 2nd gear pulls after this log and everything looked fine...no negative KC. I have those logs too but unfortunatly they are at home right now. The only time I notice the negative KC is just before the onset of boost...otherwise its fine.

Also for GMTarkin...
Sorry I should have specified I was using the Tari software. I am not positive if that acually logs knock count or not...but I was just going from the KC column cuz somethings goofey there

What are you running for spark plugs? If they are iridiums get rid of them. They caused knock on my setup when I had them in similar to yours. Your IAM is dropping because there is knock... vac or pos doesn't matter... knock is knock. Also, do you have the stock or Perrin MAF hose to go with that inlet hose? Also, might want to change your fuel filter if you haven't done that in the past 20k miles.

I am running the NGK 1 step colder copper plugs (brand new in March) and stock Maf hose...should I be running the Perrin Maf hose? Also the car has about 30,000 and I have had it since 4,000. As far as I know the fuel filter has not been changed.

I would change the fuel filter just for maintenance sake. Also, have you dataloged since you took off the helper spring? I have a friend who's run stock plat plugs for quite a while with Cobb's 2.5 setup on a VF34 and he's had no issues. Relog now that you've taken the spring off... I'm wondering if that was causing tip-in det for some reason. That's definatly what it is... tip-in det... especially since you said you don't get it at WOT all the way to redline. Also, maybe better gas could help... BP, Cheveron, etc... big name brands. Let us know what you find.

Yeah after you mentioned it I figured changing the fuel filter might not be a bad idea anyway...I guess I am kinda close to the 30K service.

Anyway, I pulled the helper spring off last night, replaced it with a much lighter version, and then reset the ECU. I ran some logs on the way home from work today and it looks much better. I still get a little negative KC...like -3...but nothing as bad as it was. I am planning on getting tuned sometime this year so hopefully this can be corrected through that. I will try no spring tomorrow and see if that helps anymore. Oh and BTW I usually run Shell V-power gas...maybe I should try another station.

Momentary -2 to -3 KC in vac can sometimes happen. Remember that the "turbo dynamics" change when you add the helper spring. Cobb never tuned the OTS maps for these springs that people add to stop "wastegate flutter" or for whatever other wacky reasons. Personally, if you're going to run OTS maps... stay away from cheap mods that play with the dynamic response of the turbo and such.

From what I've been piecing together lately, negative KC at cruise conditions is a direct number of degrees the ecu has learned to remove from the final timing. I don't know if the "Learned Knock Correction" map is accessable with Tari, but when I see this situation with ST, I look up the LKC map and see that the ecu has yanked the same amount of timing in those low load area. To break it down further, those low load areas are where the Knock Advance map either isn't scaled down enough, or is just zeroed out.

The worst thing to do right now is reset your ecu. It has learned these things for a reason. If things get better, like fuel or enviormental conditions, the ecu will start to give back more timing in a few days.

With ST, I've noticed that in regards to timing, the only thing I'm doing with it is pulling it. The more air flow I've been increasing, the less timing the car wants. I remember a while back running 40 degrees of timing >3k rpm's in a close to stock form. Now the ecu is happier closer to 30 degrees at cruise with >1350*F egt's with a vf set-up.

....so the map you have needs tweaking in some areas. Get a protune or bust out $195 and get ST....

later, x

Thanks for all the help guys...you have really shed some light on this problem. I have been driving around with the laptop in the car the past few days and things seem to be a little better....but I guess only time will tell for sure. Whenever I go WOT or greater than about 30% throttle my KC will jump up to the 8-12 area and timing looks to be pretty good too. After reseting the ECU my IAM jumped to 16 in just a few miles and has not moved since. I know I probably shouldnt have reset the ECU the other day but that IAM of 11 was killing me...it has never been that low. I am convinced though that a protune is in the near future. Oh, and I am only running the helper spring to help me reach the target PSI of 16.5 for the 2.5 map. Before the spring I was only getting maybe 15.5 on a 4th gear WOT run. Now I am hitting about 16.8-17 PSI in 4th....so it's a little closer.

Thanks again for the help.

A helper spring should not be used in these conditions. A retune is the proper way to help reach target boost, but you already know this. Also, if your IAM has climbed up to 16 after the reset and not dropped, you've pretty much assured that you've fixed the "major" det issues you were having that caused it to drop to 11 to begin with. Another thing I wanted to make sure is that you're using the stock TD04 boost hoses on the VF30 and not the ones that came with the VF30. This has to be done if you're running a Cobb OTS map.

Yup...I am running the TD04 boost hoses with the "pill" on the turbo outlet side.

I guess now I am more concerned with the well being of my motor until I can get a tune. I know detonation is no laughing matter but is it really as serious when it is at such light loads? If my IAM stays at 16 things should be fairly safe...right?

If your IAM stays at 16 then you can pretty much be sure that det even if light is not enought to cause the ECU to pull any major timing. While there might be some correction, severe correction is usually indicated by a dropping IAM. Also, det of any kind is bad for the motor... remember that it's comulative. The WRX ecu logic was setup to deal with det in various ways to save the engine... dropping IAM to a more conservative level allows the ecu to drop the KC advance to lower levels in hopes of keeping things in check. Some people may argue that an IAM of 11 is still fine, but anything other then a static 16 with regularly used fuel grade made for your octane level is not good in my book. I'd say you're better off now then you were before.

Well I am glad I am not alone with this problem. I recently got a Protune and the negative knock correction still remains. I only see a maximum of -12 and only around the 3500 to 4000 RPM area with very light throttle input. My IAM is constant at 16 and I dont appear to be pulling any timing otherwise. As far as I can tell the ECU isnt picking up any actual knock either. If I have a steady cruise around that trouble spot and hold it around that area I can get the KC to stay steady at -12. During this time I dont notice any timing being pulled and the Tari knock sensor reading (0/1) will stay at 0. At this point I am just hoping I dont have any serious mechanical problems.

Well something is damn wrong. That log is showing low throttle, just putting around. I don't think it is the tune.

Either there is a physical problem (plugs, damage, loose knock sensor), or you're not logging the correct value. It looks right for KC, so I would tend towards a physical problem.

Next time make sure to log either load your your total mass air flow. It's hard to tell what load you're at, so I'm just guessing none of that log is above atmospheric pressure looking at your throttle angle.

This certainly has NOTHING to do with boost control or helper springs. You're not even into boost on these logs. Looks like it is localized to under 4000rpm, whatever it is.

Do you know if this is sudden? I'd go pump some fresh 93 octane in from a different gas station, maybe even add some octane booster. Pulling plugs to check isn't that hard. Check your engine bay for loose items that could be rattling.

I really don't think it is the tune. Flashing back to stock might be a good idea, but I highly doubt that will do much in the load areas we're seeing in your log.

Yeah you are telling me....it is the strangest thing. I have done everything I can think of and nothing seems to help. I only notice it in that one area as well....every other point seems to be fine. I can be driving down the road at a constant throttle position hit 3.5k and actually feel the car pull timing and then as soon as 4k hits the car feels fine again. I do have one of those Ebay TMICs and noticed it does move around a little. I have a feeling it may be hitting the drivers side IC bracket...could this cause enough of a vibration to make the car think its knocking?

Also....my IAM has been at 16 for quite awhile now so the car must be somewhat happy.

Just in case anybody cares or for anybody who maybe suffering a similar problem...I think I may have fixed my issue.

Last weekend I decided to do a compression test just to see what the results would be. Upon removing my plugs (which only have maybe 4 or 5000 miles on them) I noticed a few of them were almost loose enough to remove by hand. This didnt seem right to me so when I re-installed everything I got my torque wrench out and made sure I tightened everything up to spec. Low and behold I dont have any negative knock correction any longer. I have been logging for the past three days and my KC stays steady at 0 when cruising. I will continue to monitor this and update if things change. But I am pretty confident now that I fixed the problem.

Now, I am a little concerned that this is going to screw with my tune since I had this problem when I took it in to get tuned. Guess I will be heading back to get everything back up to snuff

I've the same -kc problem, so interested that you managed to trace the issue to loose spark plugs. Did the problem come back or is it now fully resolved?

Cheers

How did you log so many parameters? Mine only lets me do 7-8 parameters before ecuexplorer freezes up. Are there some settings that I need to adjust?

something is loose, also try raising the base timing in the load area..

i did that to mine and now its almost all gone...

i left around 5 in the kc map. just in case.

car can see misfire as DET..

I thought I read that the -kc values were ok as long as you were in vacum. My car is protuned and keeps a steady IAM of 16 and will only get -kc values when I lift the throttle or change gears and I am not in boost. If your boosting with -kc values I believe thats bad.
