Default ABS & Traction Control Lights Won't Go Out Err 55

Spirited drive tonight to JFK airport and back. Sat about 20 minutes with the engine running, drove about 3 miles and stopped to pick up my daughter. Loaded luggage into car, 4 passengers in the car, and I notice the dashboard

ABS & Traction Control Lights On with Err 55 in the trip odometer. Shut engine off and on no help. Sit for a while off noe help. Any ideas?

Thank

You need to get the code pulled. WIthout it, we can't help you. Should be covered under warranty, so take it in

I'll look up the code and see if I can find it. I have the service manual.

edit: Near as I can tell the code is not ER 55 but ER SS which means "Wheel Speed Data Malfunction"

The SS vs 55 makes sense. My neighbor said that sometimes the sensors get dirty and cause this type of problem (generically speaking not necessarily Subaru). Either way the dealer is dealing with it.

Thanks

Dealer has dealt me a night without a car. Says module (not in stock) is cause of problem. BTW the lights were off for half an hour last night.

Make that 2 nights! The "module" was replaced and the problem persists. They have ordered sensor(s) and given me an Ford Focus to drive.

Hey, it still beats driving a Ford Focus, doesn't it!

After 5 days in the shop, mostly waiting for parts... The dealer totally disassembled the left rear brakes etc. They found what was described as a "piece of metal, looked like a staple" that was on the part that the sensor reads.

Been fine for the weekend. Hope this is the end of it.

Had the same thing pop up on my dash Monday night. "ABS", "Traction Ctrl OFF" and "Check Engine" lights were ON. "Cruise" was FLASHING and "ER SS" popped up on the odometer. Cruise Control did not work. When I started it up again a few hours later, "ABS" light had turned OFF and "ER SS" was gone from odometer, the others were still lit. All day Tuesday, same thing. Today (Wednesday) all's fine at start-up, no indicators lit. Cruise Control works fine.

Car ran fine during all this. I "felt" as if nothing was wrong. Only the lights indicated something was.

I guess it fixed itself. Ah, the joys of being a praying man!!

Have a Happy Thanksgiving everybody!

Regards...Joe

My car has had the exact same problem for over a year now. When I get stuck in stop and go traffic this will happen and stay showing ER SS until I turn off the car and start it back up. I've had 3 differant sets of wheels on it, lowered it, lifted it (yes, about 2.5inches higher than stock), and lower it again. Its seen everything from rock climing, hi speed rally abuse, snow, to hi speed canyon running, so I just figured I mess up a sensor and have let it go without checking it out. No problems, just the lights lighting up 1 out of 5 times I get stuck in traffic. I'll keep track of your thread and see what you come up with.
