Default Anemic sound system

We purchased two B9 limited 5 passenger models and have yet to take delivery on one. The first one's sound system is aweful. It is supposed to have an upgraded soundsystem with an amplified subwoofer. There is no bass at all, only distortion. I adjusted the levels and no improvement, only more distortion.

We went to two dealers. The first stated that the amplified subwoofer was only installed in the seven passenger model. The second qualified the product manual due to Subaru's documentation errors, but confirmed through his mechanic that it did in fact come standard with a subwoofer. In fact, the he claimed subwoofer was located behind perforated molding in rear cargo area on passenger side. I held hand over to determine if sound felt different than door speakers and it was identical. The accessory manual states that the amplified subwoofer is supposed to be mounted under the driver's seat. We only have nav dvd under our seat.

Since we are picking up other B9 tomorrow, but haven't finalized paperwork, I am hoping to hear back from other limited edition owners as to whether they have the amplified subwoofer under the driver's seat, or if it is truely in the rear as noted above. In addition, whether they are pleased with the sound quality.

Perhaps this is cynical but I think the dealer may have uninstalled the subwoofer to sell as an accessory on non-limited models. Seriously, the sound just cannot be THIS BAD for a premium sound system.

Any responses would be appreciated. Thanks.

On 7-seat limited edition, subwoofer is standard and indeed installed on the back as your dealer described. On 5-seat and other trim levels, it is optional and installed under either driver seat or passenger seat. Subaru changed configurations in B9 a few times, so I wouldn't be supprised to see either configuations from factories. Neither systems sound great. In fact I can't really feel the sub at all until I converted my CDs into MP3 CDs. These are quite small woofers (maybe 5"). You need 8" to 10" woofers to have any decent sound out it.

The only good sound system Subaru offers is Macintoh (spelling??) system found on old OB VDC models.

5p ltd definitely has sub woofer in panel passenger rear. If you didn't get limited model dealer would install "accessory" sub woofer under seat.

Sound system is definitely not as good as my 02 Legacy GT. My evaluation is based on how loud you can play "livin On A Prayer" by Bon Jovi.

My children and I give the Tribeca an 80 vs the GT's 95.

Peaty said that the Tribeca was missing "definition".

I am disappointed.

While installing the back up warning system I got a look at the sub box in the right rear of the cargo area. It's a good sized box with a port. I can't say for sure if the 5 seater ltd has this or not. To test it though you'd be better off putting your hand over the smaller opening because it's the port. You can see it in this pic here:

If that link works (you need to be logged into scoobymods but it's free to register)

I agree that the system is just OK in the B9. I would not call it horrible but compared to the McIntosh in our OB VDC it pales in comparison.

I personally feel the 2.5i Limited/LGT/OBXT/and H6OB with the under driver's seat sub sound better than the Tribeca LTD with the subwoofer in the back. I do not know if it's possible to make manual adjustments to the sub on the Tribeca as you can on the under seat sub

I didn't see any adjustments on the B9 system other than what you can do on the head unit.

My 03GT wagon came standard with upgraded sound and the subwoofer was in the rear.

Actually, there IS something under the driver's seat in mine (which is an '06 Limited) unless that is just an amp? There also appears to be a space for a subwoofer in the rear cargo area as well so maybe THAT is where the subwoofer is?

I'm not sure...
