Has anyone investigated the possibility of using one of the locking mechanisms from a subaru hatch on the tailgate? Then you could wire it into the door lock circuit, which would be a lot easier than rigging a locking system for the tonneau covers.
(I just made my own cover this weekend, and after looking at my roomates impreza started wondering if I could use the same lock his hatch has in the tailgate. Would sure be nicer looking!)

Can't help you on the locking thing but there is no way you are going to come on here and talk about a homemade cover and not post a pic or 2.
So get clicking.... ![]() |

Just a note, the snuglid has an optional keyless accessory to lock/unlock the lid. the lid covers the tailgate and the tailgate won't open with the lid down.
Here is the link |

It's not perfect, but I think I could knock out another one in a day and of course now that I've seen the final product I think the next one will come out nicer. |

As for looking like the Ozz cover, well if you're going to put vinyl over wood with foam there aren't a lot of options really. I wanted originally to try and make it a one piece, but that would have made it a lot more complicated. The hardest part was making the template for the bed, that took me a day by itself!Mine's a dark blue btw, to match the car. Doesn't show up well in the afternoon lighting. To be honest I'm surprised more people aren't making these. It's not that hard. |

I wasn't thinking about a full size one, just one drawn to scale with actual dimensions noted, etc..
If that doesn't work, I live up in Red Bluff and travel to Sac almost weekly for work - maybe we can hook up sometime and I could get a copy of the one you did on butcher paper or cardboard or whatever. Lemme know.... |

Let us know what you come up with on a locking system. I've been looking around for a 12V plunger-style actuator that I can adapt to the dead-bolt style lock on my ozz cover so I could wire it parallel with the door locks.
BTW...nice job on the DIY cover! I thought about doing my own, but since my dealer was running a killer special at $495/installed, I jumped on it. |
