Post Speedo to a Ton

Some of the Impreza guys were grumbling that their car needed mods to get to a ton (100mph). Well my 2.5 GT Wagon gets there with only a K&N filter for a mod. It might have gone faster but I was running out of road. And before you ask the road is 3.2 miles with no crossroads or traffic of any kind. BTW the car is an automatic.

Hee hee, that's child's play. Of course, I don't have a picture to back it up, but I've had my speedo pegged and the tach at about 5850rpm (about 130mph).

Nice picture, nonetheless. Even had the cruise control on! Not set, I imagine, but that certainly makes it a better story. Although I've found that the cruise won't allow you to set it any higher than about 93mph. Which made me wonder, why 93?!

Probably the servo and linkage that pulls the throttle open for the cruise runs out of travel. They probably didn't intend for it to be a safety thing, but it worked out that way. The cruise servo prob. won't hold WOT in other words. This would be pretty easy to check, just go under the hood and operate the parts with your hands (and the car off....)

Nice picture. My L+ has been to about 115. It was very easy to go this fast. I only have a 2.2 so I can't imagine why the RS are having a problem getting to 100mph.

My turbo reads to 140 but i've only had it around 125. The RSes i were with had obviously pegged by then

Yes but how long did you thke to get to that speed...I only had about 1.75 miles to get there and had to slow for a corner and hold the camera at the same time. I'm guessing 120 is not out of the question if given the room and a flat road.

Just a side note ..If I realy want to go fast I use this.

She will do an honest 155 and that aint no bull. The speedo is off like on most vehicles but I have a bicycle speedo that dead on and it will do 155.

The reason why RS's run out quickly is b/c they have a high drag coefficient... I can't remember what the Cd value was, but the Legacys are more "slippery" in the air w/ less scoops and vents etc to create speed robbing drag.

Well I think the Impreza's are geared lower than the Legacy and as such run out of poop faster and can't get the higher speeds.

It's not a gearing thing. The 2.5RS and 2.5GT use an identical drivetrain, right down to the tranny and diff gear ratios. I would imagine that the 2.2L versions of each car are also the same.

I think there are a number of things here. GTBGUY hit on part of it, aerodynamics. I wouldn't be surprised if some people frankly just don't know how to drive - they shift into 5th too soon at which point acceleration dies. They may not realize the car will do 100mph in 4th if you're willing to take it to redline. Just a hunch. I've never read about one of the "knowledgeable" people on the iClub having any trouble getting to 100mph or beyond.

I've never had any problem getting to 100 mph in my RS, they are easier to get there than any of my other cars (which isn't saying much).

Oh and no turbo on my car, Amsoil filter, silencer removal, STi exhaust with 2.25" midpipe.

I've never heard someone complain about trying to reach 100 mph in an RS, unless they had an Automatic.

In that same run i mentioned earlier, i was being gained on by one RS at nearly 125.

His is a '01 with the rallispec intake, borla headers and S-AFC.

Fast car, it's the bane of the STS class 'round here.

My guess would be that anyone in a Subaru with at least a 2.2 Liter normally aspirated engine was having problems getting to a ton, he would be having trouble stripping his car down to get it under 2000 pounds.

The fastest verifiable speed I was able to reach with my RS was 114 MPH before I ran out of room. My GPS has a max speed reading feature so I know that is pretty accurate. I've found my speedo to be off on the high side a little on the higher end. With the Legacy OB (auto) it just sat at 103 or so and would not go any faster.

I didn't find the RS particularly comfortable at high speed, it's more of a brick than my Contour was. I've had the Contour up over 125 and it felt like 80 and was very stable. I like going quick in the RS not fast. Which is good I have more opportunity to go quick

this is all hogwash. Of course the RS will top 100. I remember reading somewhere that it will go something like 120. It ain't drag coefficient keeping an RS from breaking 100. My Outback was flirting with 110 on the long straight at Summit Point before I ran out of room. Any RS that can't break 100 needs a "check driver" light.

Cool

I had my stock '00 Legacy GT at 118 on a back road for a moment. The sound was unforgetable. I love this car.

Here's what I discovered the other night...100 mph with Tein coilovers is a whole different ballgame. You can tell you're going that fast because of the speedo, and the sound of the car working, but the suspension is so firmly, securely planted, bereft of any upset, that you feel like you could go at that speed forever.

I continue to be amazed at what is still my most gratifying mod.

What's the big fuss with 100mph??

The other night I pulled 213km/h (~132mph) coming home from work. My Australian spec Liberty RX2.5 is dead stock.

My only advantage over you guys is that my speedo reads to 220 km/h (137km/h)

BTW the car is an auto

I concur with Talon. My Leg' 2.5 auto gets to 200 km/h in reasonably short order and you can add another indicated 15 km/h or so if you've got enough room (my speedo is 3 km/h out over 110 km/h, so call it 5 km/h out at over 200).

Of course all this was done where it is entirely legal, if not advisable.
